Help First android - CONFUSED!

Newbie
Hello party people. Just switched over from iOS after 5 years to my first ever android device (Samsung GS3 on v4.0.4). Loving the shit out of it so far, but I'm ever so slightly confused by what can be a few rudimentary things (hopefully!). Sorry in advance for the long post, and thanks in advance for your help! :)

1) Earlier today I noticed superuser constantly giving access to "shell". What/why is that? Oddly enough it also kept making my music start from the beginning over and over! :S I've attached a screenshot of the su log.
(Yeah I've rooted even though I'm a noob. Hardcore droid friend told me it was a good idea if I wanna install custom ROMs at some point, which I do plan to do).

2) Is there a way to prevent notifications from interrupting music playback? Every gtalk message basically pauses my music and starts it up again. I use the default music player currently. I did read that muting your phone is a work-around, but I'd rather not do that all the time.

3) Is there a way to play podcasts the way an iOS device does it, where it remembers the position you were even after changing tracks? Weird how I never even noticed that as a feature until I lost it! :)

4) This is a dumb question. I've installed titanium backup. Is it best to back EVERYTHING up on android, or just certain files/settings? Also, get an SD card for storage or can I backup directly to my PC (don't think a full backup will even fit on default SD)?

I'm playing with it a lot and discovering new things all the time, but the above is where I've hit a wall and just don't know anymore!
Love the phone (and OS!) otherwise.

Can't help woth other questions but as for number 3 I use Podkicker Pro for podcasts. It remembers positions on mulitple podcasts.

I also moved from an iPhone and this is one area that I haven't found anything as good as an app called 'Bookmark' that I used for audio books and podcasts in iOS. Podkicker Pro is OK but its still a bit clunky.

First of all welcome to the community glad you did the switch

It looks like it is comeing from an app you installed. And it is doing background proccesses. Also if you are on the AT&T version of the S3 i have a good list of roms kernels and tweaks if you want to check it out.

In the app settings or the system setting if you disable it or set it to silent it shouldent do that anymore.

It is the best for data file as far as system you want to go with a nandroid backup as it backups everything. Especially if you aee looking into modding you will want to do this or you will have a harder time if something goes wrong. And a full backup will fit on your sd as it is compressed.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask.

unless i am mistaken some system app backups wont be compatible with a new rom, so my suggestion would be to backup all new user apps and newer versions, then backup what system apps you would need that are compatible (somebody please slap me if im wrong). you can also backup to dropbox, but this may take a while, depending on your connection speed ;)

Thanks for the replies guys.

can't find anything, but am experimenting with different music players now.

Nandroid???

question 4 use a nandroid backup also when modding and restoring from tb problems can occur. send copy of backups to the cloud for safe keeping

Nope your right some apps wont be compatible but most will

Use MyBackup Pro to backup your downloaded apps and their data. It can also backup your messages and more. I use it all the time when switching ROMs and find it much easier to use and more problem-free than Titanium.

Then do a full Nandroid backup in CWM and you're good to go.

Flash roms/mods ect.
You access it by holding the home and vol. up button when your turning it up. You might have gotten root by flashing through cwm

Cool, gonna check that out.

Also, blenky, found OneCast. Works very well with podcasts and I recommend it to you as an almost-replacement for the way iPod works on iOS.
