Root [International Tegra 3] New HTC One X - sim card and OTA questions

Just got my unbranded HOX which is unlocked afaik - bought it second hand.

I check the version and its 4.0.3 and 4.0 sense. Checked for updates and none were available for the device. Hmm was hoping for 4.1.. so I though maybe you need to put your sim card in first for the update to appear.

I took my sim out of my htc desire and tried to put it in the HOX...Hmmm too big.

Seems you need a microsim? I am on tesco mobile in the UK, pay monthly. Anyone know if they will give me a microsim?

I see there are cutters available, not sure if I want to do that.

What about the update? Need a sim for it?
 
Yeah, I presume you need the SIM to update. I seem to recall someone being in the same situation as you just after the phone was released. They didn't get one of the earlier updates until they put their SIM in.

It looks as though Tesco will give you a Micro SIM too. You can fill out their micro SIM replacement form via the Tesco Mobile site, but if you manage to find it, you're a better man than I. Alternatively, contact Customer Services and they'll be able to send one out to you in 3 days.

Your best bet might actually be to visit a local store, they'd probably be able to give you one there and then.
 
Just cut your SIM, it's dead easy :)

I've done loads with my cutter, and even did my first one with scissors (which I still use now).
 
I went into town at lunch time and a guy in a phone shop used a sim cutter and cut my existing sim into the shape of a micro sim. Only cost
 
Hmmm my CID is VODAP001 - Vodafone I presume? So its vodafone 'branded' - but has no vodafone apps or anything on it. I take it vodafone hasnt released the update then

Lucky you, you have a Voda branded handset just like me.

You should have some Voda apps, though, and a Voda splash on bootup.

If you don't then it's likely the software is proper old, as mine gained a Voda splash over the air.

Current newest Voda firmware is 1.29.161.13

Edit: OK, what you've got there is a Voda handset with a debranded ROM on it, any OTA updates it does find will fail due to the wrong CID.
 
No superuser app, and def no vodafone apps. When rebooting I only get the HTC quietly brilliant white screen.

You think someone has rooted and flashed a custom ROM? But you would see the superuser app like you say?

From what I know of the history of this phone, a guy had it and sent it for repair (wifi issues and yellow dots) and they sent him a new phone instead. The phone came from HTC he said. He swapped it for a galaxy note with some other guy and he then sold it to me.

Its looks mint and runs really well. Just hoping I can update it?> Anything else I can try>?
 
There are a number of checks that are done before your phone will update OTA, 2 of those are CID & software version, if they match (and other criteria is met), your phone will download and install the update. I'm sort of stuck because I'm not sure what to do if they don't match as I'm not sure if an RUU would work. :o

Are you comfortable getting into hboot? If yes, can you tell me what it says in neon pink atop the bootloader please? Does it also say S-OFF or S-ON?

If no, head to Settings -> Power -> Fastboot and untick the box. Turn your phone off, wait a minute, then turn it back on whilst holding down the volume down button until it takes you to a screen with 3 skateboarding androids along the bottom of it. As above, look for what the neon pink writing says and S-OFF or S-ON.

To leave hboot, use your volume button to navigate and power to select, and go for fastboot, then reboot.

at the very top, in pink it says *** UNLOCKED ***

It's not a custom ROM, it's just the Euro unbranded stock ROM.

You can update it to the latest version, but not OTA. You'll have to download the 2.17 RUU, extract the system/boot images and flash them with fastboot.
 
I'd hazard a guess and say you've a custom ROM. I don't see how you could've got a vodafone CID with unbranded firmware on it any other way.

Unless there's something I'm missing?
 
Hmm two different opinions here. Would HTC send out a replacement phone to someone that had a vodafone CID but no other branding?

So def no way to update via OTA? What RUU should I download, any guides on this?

Not sure TBH, but I doubt HTC would send out a phone with an unlocked bootloader which is what leads me to believe there's a custom ROM on there. Iirc, when I was on ARHD, looking at the software version, it didn't always say it was ARHD, I think it just gave the official software version it was based on. Install Root Checker, let me know if you're rooted.

If you want the latest version, a custom ROM might be the way to go.

My experience or RUU's is slightly limited, as Rusty has pointed out, you could try and extract the system and boot images and just flash via fastboot, but I think flashing a custom ROM would probably be easier and more beneficial in the long term.

so let me just double check here - is the bootloader unlocked? So is the warranty invalid technically? Does it need to be relocked before an RUU can be flashed?
I need to root before flashing a new ROM (need clockworkrecovery installed)

Confused a bit here :(
 
Yep, bootloader is unlocked, warranty is techincally invalid, yes it would need to be relocked for an RUU to work.

Re clockwork, you don't need root for that with an unlocked bootloader, you can flash manually via fastboot.

You have two options really, both are likely to require a bit of fastboot.

Option 1 would be to keep unbranded stock, to do that, see my earlier post.

Option 2 is a custom ROM based on the newest release. You would need to fastoot a custom recovery (unless it has one already, boot into fastboot, pick bootloader, the recovery. If you see a text menu, it's a custom one) then use it to flash the ROM of your choice.

Secret (and sucky) Option 3: Relock and RUU it back to Voda branded firmware, everything will work as it is intended, including future (delayed) OTA updates.

Your warranty is more than likely toast, although it does seem to depend on how good a mood the repair technician is in.
