Notifications coming through in Airplane mode

I put my phone in Airplane mode last night, yet the US Open app woke me during the night (I'm in the UK) alerting me to a score in a tennis match. How is this even possible when the phone is in Airplane mode?
 
Well Airplane mode was definitely on (little Airplane icon was visible) and I definitely never turned WiFi on AFTER setting Airplane mode on...

Does Mobile Data get automatically turned off when Android see it's in Airplane mode or ..?

GSM / 3G and WiFi should turn off with flight mode. WiFi can be turned back on though.

Is it possible the app received the result earlier in the day and notified you later? When were the results known in reality vs when you received them vs when did you activate flight mode?
 
No, I turned on Airplane mode about 11pm UK time, and the result that came through didn't actually happen till around 2am UK time.

Yes, but in UK time, what time would the results have been known? What I'm getting at is were the results available before 11PM uk time?
 
No, as I said, Airplane mode was set at 11pm UK time and the tennis match didn't even start till 1am UK time, so the phone was already in Airplane mode by the time the match got started.
 
I'd recommend asking the developer the extent of this permission:

NETWORK COMMUNICATION
FULL INTERNET ACCESS
Allows the app to create network socket

By creating a socket, will it establish a connection if there isn't one present?
