Help [Bell] Firmware Update

ckavvouras

Newbie
This morning I woke up around 5am and as usual sit down in front of the tube and and started playing with my phone while I fully wakeup, and I went in to my phones settings and checked for update hoping for jb update and to my surprise there was an update. I after it was all said and done it changed my baseband my kernel and my build version and added brightness slider to my pull down notification. I have included screen shot, but the reason this has peaked my curiosity is cause I have spoke to several people about it on the same network as me including my gf and she got her phone the exact same time as me and she is still running the older version and can't get her phone to update. If anyone has an idea of what's going on please fill me in

I do know this isn't jb but the phone ui does seem a lot smoother and cell standby is at the bottom of the list and quadrant does seem to be getting better results but this could just be all in my head

I've updated your thread topic to show that you're on Roger's service. If this is incorrect, please let me know :)

I'm also on Rogers, and replied in a different thread about the battery drain I've been getting since the update. It all seems to be related to my sdcard. The Gallery app was very laggy and I noticed sdcard was using all the battery power.

Curious if you have noticed this, if you use an sdcard.

Well I'm not with Rogers so I couldn't say but I have not used an sd card but this could be a firmware issue and not so much with the phone, and I have no real lag with my ui or gallery or anything else for that matter

It is the update they started rolling out a few weeks ago. I have Tmobile and a lot of people got theirs before me. They don't send it out all at once, it goes in cycles. Your friend will probably get hers soon. My update also helped with performance too!

Have you attempted a factory reset after updating? Sometimes after taking new updates, phones can act quirky until they are factory reset.

Why would I phone is better then it was before faster benchmarks smoother ui transition and cell standby seems to be reporting properly now

Factory reset doesn't remove the update. It clears out your settings. Sometimes having some user settings in apps causes things to not operate correctly after they get updated. So factory reset fixes this.

Your update will remain :) After resetting, you'll have to resync contacts and reinstall apps, but battery drain will probably be better, apps will not crash, etc.

Ahh I didn't know that good to know I might do that as soon as I get home and can back it up thanks, I would have thought factor resort would install original firmware

I'm on Bell as well and I have yet to receive the update. I am hoping the update fixes the issue where about once a week, my phone loses connectivity with the Bell network. I can't make calls or texts. Only WiFi works. Only way to fix this is to reboot the phone.

Yeah I think that has more to do with bell then the phone, bell has a lot of coverage but their signal strength isn't the greatest especially when indoors

It has nothing to do with signal strength. I use to use an HTC Desire Z. I have never experienced a situation where I lost connection with the Bell network and cannot get it back unless I reboot. The signal strength is fine where I live. I never had a dropped call unless underground.

The problem with the SGS3 is that I can still see the signal indicator and it shows like 3 bars, but the phone cannot connect to the network at all. If I leave my house, I do not see the H+ or LTE indicator on my phone. It is as if somehow, the phone refuses to connect with the Bell network. It loses connectivity at random. I'd be at home where the signal is strong and then I cannot make a call. Once I reboot, it's fine.

This reminds me of an issue with the HTC Dream. I spoke to someone who had one of these phones and he had an issue where the Dream would just stop talking to the carrier's network. Only a reboot fixes it. I think it is a bug with the software. If it is the network, then I should have experienced this at least once in the past year and a half with my hold HTC Desire Z phone. It never happened with my old phone, so I suspect that the issue is with the software on the SGS3.

i bought my international version unlocked gt-i9300 online. given i can use either at&t or t-mobile sim card, what determines when i get the update to jelly bean?

given my phone is not branded to a particular carrier, carrier's update is not a factor for me. that said, how does update release to people like me who buys standalone unlocked phone online.

that might be the case for your phone and your location but i have tested my phone with with a fido chip vs bell chip in my home and i was getting a way better signal strength with fido but then again that could be do to tower position, im not gonna lie i have managed to get lte speed of 30 mbps in many parts of Montreal on bell and over all i don't really have a problem unless im in my house for some weird reason

the only way you can update your device right now is if you root and install one of the leaked versions for the i9300 but other then that you will have to wait for the official version to be released for you to upgraded

Sounds like the issue I had with my htc sensation. That's why I upgraded to the s3. Have you tried any of the following: new sim card, resetting your phone and or exchanging your phone?

I just got the new firmware update this morning. I'm going to wait to see if this happens again with this new firmware.

Only thing I noticed so far is that my car stereo now also displays the track number when playing my music on my phone over my car's BlueTooth audio player. Before it only showed, the song title, artist and album info.

Just received the update yesterday. Trying to find out what this does. Only thing I've seen so far, is the brightness now appears on the notification screen.

I was hoping it would do some battery fixes but it seems to drain just as fast. :p

It reset a few settings back to default, ie: time (non 24 hour mode), turned off my wireless, etc.

Anyone aware of a list this is supposed to fix/enhance?

Telus here. Recieved update this am. Camera functions have changed as well.

Where you used to be able to choose between auto focus, macro and burat shot mode has changed into an in-camera filterset option (regular, sepia etc) and some of the settings have changed around.

I noticed that it fixed the issue where before I cannot chose any of my custom notifications in S Calendar. It would just revert back to the default notification sound. After the update, I can choose any notification sound and it keeps that setting.
