iPhone 5 live launch

The Galaxy Nexus got a lot of love on those shows during pre-release.

If it's a newsworthy phone, they slurp it up. :)

I agree. I just wandered into the local newspaper's newsroom (I am going to freelance) and there were people talking about the new phone.

I guess listening and reading about some GD phone is better than reading about rape, murder, robbery and the local dry cleaners leaking chemicals into the Sandy City water supply. No wonder the guy down the road claims he can now run his car on water.

Anyway . . .

There is an old saying: "If it bleeds, it leads." I guess that applies to other tihngs, too. Actually, not sure how it applies in this discussion, but it is a saying from the good old days and it is true..

Without black strap molasses and a bit of mustard, I respectfully wonder about that.

Hey Early . . . you are likely thinking about baked beans. I am talking about Lima Beans and Ham hocks. Different kind of dish. I do love baked beans, too.

I love 'em. Lots of ham and the salt pork eliminates the need for salt. and it ads a little Pork Power to the pot.

IMO apple tries to be somewhat behind the curve. It really is smart Business. They CAN be slightly behind bc guess what? People will still buy/praise the iphone. They are blind to the fact that android has had many of apples new "innovative" features for some time now. I guarantee once the i5 hits people's hands that 4inch screen will Be another "innovation" by Apple... Even though until now anything bigger than their previous 3.5 is WAY too big. They know what's to be expected of a present day smartphone, But they push this iphone 5 out and guess what? People will gobble it up like it's going out of style. Then next year the 5s will come out.. Once again slightly behind. All so that they can keep that cycle going, releasing phones to make the most cash while spreading new features thin. For example I saw a friend posted on Facebook "Can't wait for the iphone 5, this blows the 4s and android out of the water" when I asked him what exactly the iphone 5 offers that android doesn't his response? siri.... Hmm.. That was on the 4s. Nothing new there.. And any "new" Feature to the i5 us androids have had for some time. Dare I say..old... android features at that..Since jelly bean is already here. Amongst other things, He tried to brag about being able to take stills while shooting hd video. Little did he know.. My evo lte does that. And has for months.

When people say they don't trust nfc or similar technology I always ask myself why? This is 2012..whether most people like it or not our world is technology dependant. Most all of our personal info is out there in the matrix. And if someone wants it... Their going to get it. It's not just nfc that is a risk. As I said I use it daily . And I for one am really excited to see where this new technology goes in the future. Although this technology has been used overseas for a while now(Google wallet type tech) . It's new to us. And I'm happy to own one of the first devices to support it.

My view is every time something designed to simplify our lives arrives, the darker side emerges soon after.

This is true in many ways. There is always someone looking to take advantage or misuse tech. It can't be avoided and will probably never go away. I try to take the good with the bad personally. With cars we get car crashes and with planes we get plane crashes. The problem is that living in fear of advancement does nothing but holds us back. We couldn't possibly be were we are as a species if we lived in fear of moving forward.

Then again, some of the dark sides you refer to are hyped by those wishing to sell us protection. Take identity theft as an example. People are generally terrified of it. They spend a ton of money to help prevent it. Many avoid doing certain things online because they are so concerned about it. Problem is that majority of identity theft comes from people going through your garbage and not finding your info online. Most criminals are pretty low tech because most of them really aren't that bright, which is why most of them are criminals in the first place.

I leave the house and simply open the door and press a button. I can leave the bulky phone at home and carry my little key chain thingy. And is it really important to have a phone with the capability to tell you what equipment you used at the gym? Really? If that is what you want, go for it. For me, I rely on my memory.

To be completely honest, I never darken the doorway of a gym. To much work. A nice single malt scotch (neat) served on the club's patio is easier.

See, I'm one of those people that doesn't leave the room without my phone.

As far as the gym equipment goes, there are apps that help you track your workouts. They can help you look back at what you've done or what has been most successful for you. I wasn't too into working out at first, but after a I while I started to love it. It has become very necessary since I don't eat right and I quit smoking. Going to the gym is the difference between me being a size 6 or a size 10.

DISCLAIMER: I am 78.965% Luddite, so view my disdain for the wild increase in technology. People will demand it after they are told they need it and fact is, we do not need even smartphones.
I understand where you are coming from. My girlfriend is the same way. If she had her way we would all be using pen and paper. The only thing she likes about any tech is her laptop even though she is convinced that it hates her.

I think that with the way things are in the world, happy stories are being pushed more than doom and gloom these days. well, until the zombie apocalypse anyway.

All of the morning shows today were basically a free advertisement for Apple every half hour. I don't understand why the networks feel the need to give the giant more free publicity for everything they do. The other morning, one of the anchormen was grinning ear to ear like an idiot, holding up his two iPhones for the camera and saying how he felt like a kid waiting for Christmas morning waiting for the iPhone 5. Just bizarre to me.

I am not sure how old you are or if you know about how things once were, but my "hands on" experience with the press began in 1973 when I covered local car races for the Salt Lake Tribune. I recall what a newsroom was like in the good old days and how it has changed.

As an aside, I remember when type was cast in lead and set. I also remember when photo typesetting arrived and it was GD costly to have a few lines of photographic quality type set; it took hours some times.

Most kids have no clue about the old days. Not even the journalists coming out of J-School really know that there was a time when things were different and the fluff that make the front page above the fold today, would not have been printed thirty years ago.

So I am not surprised the talking heads are gushing. Not surprised at all.

As I posted a few moments ago, I am going to freelance for the local newspaper. I was in the offices today and my, how things have changed. We simply lack what once made newspapers special. these days; we devote more ink to the latest antics of some crappy star than we do to the important stuff.

I listened to people talking about the new phone and they were excited and pleased to say the least. It is as though two airplanes collided in mid air; the newsroom was over joyed and for some reporters, this was the story of the week.

My theory is if there were a plane collision, we would hear about it after they talked about the iPhone.

These days, anyone can be a "reporter" and I know more than a few old timers who are glad they are out of the game.

I can see the national press covering Apple. After all, countless people have waited for its release and it really is news. But it should be covered by people who know and then it should stop. We get it, Apple released a new phone and the world is a much safer place.

Tell me something important, will you?

Here is a tip for the gathered few following this thread: give a listen to the Eagles song, 'Dirty Laundry.' It explains everything you need to know about news, reporters and the press.

Seems we humans will soon lose our minds and our limbs will grow smaller and smaller until we no longer have them. We will lose them from lack of use. We will be at the mercy of our phones and a bunch of tags. I am betting the 900 plus exabyte facility the gubbernment is building (look it uo) will partially be devoted to monitoring our NFC and related taggy thingys

Today, I was actually able to time a pot of beans cooking in the pressure cooker without my Android phone or iPad. Absolutely amazing. I wanted to add a tag but I thought someone would swallow it and sue me.

I used an electric analog clock and it actually worked.

Things went well. I added some bacon, ham hocks and for a little more Pork Power, a slice of salt pork. You should have been there . . . the feast was glorious.

I keep kosher so maybe I shouldn't. :)
But I also go without almost any technology one day a week (no TV, computer, phone, pencils, etc) so I have no problem with going super high tech the rest of the week.

You are tech savvy and I'll assume you can tell if some new fangled idea is a good idea or a bad one. Most people are not and they do not care until something goes bad.

I say learn what can happen and always protect yourself. I feel it is upon us and it will eventually swallow us whole.

By the way, tell your GF good for you. Keep the pen alive. Every year, I participate with a fountain pen collectors group that writes letters to soldiers in the hospital and suffering in some crap hole far from home.

We indulge our passion and we hopefully cheer up a soldier here and there. BTW: iTunes gift cards are a huge hit.

Bob, the most important thing I can tell you is that sometimes you bring a smile to my face.

I am working in silly mode. I decided to stear clear of the political threads and stay here to teach you all why Apple is good and most of you are wrong. so very, very wrong, smiley, LOL :D

I think that with the way things are in the world, happy stories are being pushed more than doom and gloom these days. well, until the zombie apocalypse anyway.

I am not so sure about thay, but I have no facts or figures.

Look at this forum. One almost dare not post about Apple without some people flying off the handle. And others do not read the top of the page that says "Anything Goes."

Genially speaking, I think bad news will always lead. Fortunately, it dies as soon as the talking heads tire of it.

I rather like the good news. I know bad things happen and these days, nothing amazes me, so hearing about some tragedy is just too tiring. I ordered an all wood model of a sailing ship. Why, you ask? Well, I need something interesting to do rather than listen to the evening news.

Just now, the local news is telling me it will talk about the iPhone 5. I'll bet I get nothing but regurgitated stuff from the last story.

How very sad.:D

Pork is one of nature's wonders to be sure. As are properly prepared rabbits and shellfish. I gues those are off limits as well? Bob is not Jewish, so the laws are unfamiliar.

So what will you do if you learn that Android is not kosher?

Smiley!

No offense; your beliefs are your own and far be it from me--a fundamentalist heathen--to comment on the dietary laws of the Jewish folk. I'll eat anything, including snakes, toads, a properly smoked eel, fried green tomatoes and ham, raw egg and the mystery meals I find deep in the bowels of the refer.

Bob, I'm a woman therefor, I am never ever wrong.:p

Here I think it depends on how you post about things. There are ways to word things so that people don't freak out and ways to word it so that they will 10 times over. Since the words are in black and white they don't really put your intentions, expressions or mannerisms in front of the intended audience the same way a face to face conversation can. Anger, hate, aggravation and most of the negative emotions show up using text much easier than light hearted things like sarcasm or laughter. In other words, nobody can see you typing with a smile, but everyone can see you typing with anger.

I'm not trying to imply anything, but you have to look at it the same way as speaking or reading to a child when you are on the internet. Think about reading to a child from something horrible like a Hitler speech, but using the voice of Barney the dinosaur. Now think about reading a Dr. Seuss book in the voice Hitler would use during a speech. Those are two general ways that people can read through our comments on this forum. When you end up discussing anything that another person is obviously going to disagree with then it is typically time to start using the Barney voice because we all know we will shut down and stop listening once the Hitler voice comes out.

Some of the comments in this very thread are like that. There have been a couple of people who popped in to say something in a very angry way. The words used and the structure of the post was one of boarder line rage. I'm not sure if they even read the thread or not. It could have just been someone seeing a bunch of Android users commenting on Apple and thinking the worst.

In the end we all place our bias on what we are reading so throwing some sugar on things makes it go down easier for those consuming our words.

The only good thing about the iPhone hoopla is it gives us a break from the breathless breaking news about who got kicked off of American Idol or "The Voice" last night. I don't care who you are, that is not news. All kinds of hell is breaking out in the Middle East. I could care less if Britney dissed a contestant on their inane karaoke contest.

Is that Sergey Brin without the beard?
If so, that is very kosher hehe

I have an app by the OU that notifies me whenever there's a new kosher product.

I have a Jewish calendar widget that tells me the day of the month and the number of days until Rosh Hashana, next week. There are all kinds of apps I would like to develop because we have a lot to keep track of!

Bob, I'm a woman therefor, I am never ever wrong.:p

I tend to agree. I have worked for woman before and they tend to be smart and focused. I would rather work for a woman, I think. For example, if Oprah makes me an offer, I am there. If Larry Ellison were to make me an offer, I might not go. Even though I admire Larry.

You admire Larry Ellison...? ...wait. What was that noise?... Oh, I think Earlymon's head just exploded!:D:vroam:

Sad thing for us - accessory makers will step up to the plate for them and release new goodies. And someone will get rich with an accessory dock adapter.

We'll continue to be grateful for an occasional dock or universal car mount never actually tested with any high end Android phones. :(

For real.
If Google decides to put these stupid Pogo pins on the next Nexus they better release some friggin accessories to use them! (and not charge an arm and a leg for them ;))

Apparently Apple sold out of iPhones almost immediately. I've got to give them credit here. A product that's not revolutionary at all but sells better than the products that are is something to behold.

Or, is it the old create a fake "shortage" to increase the hype trick?
