Remote Connection to NAS

Hello,

I appreciate that there are probably a few posts on this already, but I think I have some specific queries and the fact that I haven't brought an NAS yet warrant a fresh question.

I'm using a HTC Desire (rooted, Cyanogenmod) and I want to listen to music that I store on a NAS at home (which I haven't bought yet). I connect to my Wi-Fi at work, so data allowances are not an issue. However, I have a load of music and a 32gb card is a bit of a restriction.

My current setup is an external HDD (not NAS) attached to my router via USB. I'm running a Belkin DB600.

Through other threads I know that it is possible to do this but I'm not sure if it's possible with my current setup. If I do need to buy a NAS, are there any recommendations over which one?

On top of this, I've found plenty of apps (e.g. TVersity, Twonky, DAAP) that offer connections to uPNP media servers (like NAS) but I'm quite picky when it comes to my media players. I like Winamp because it has a great UI, shows album art, can collect and update the metatags/album art and scrobbles to Last.fm (that last one is pretty important).

So I'd like to use a media player that does all of this whilst being able to pick up media on my external HDD/NAS away from my home network. Any recommendations? Or is there a way of forcing the Android app to 'discover' media stored somewhere other than the \music folder of the phone?

Cheers.

I can tell you what I use if that helps.

I have a mediaserver running Windows on my network. Installed on the server is a helper app from Audiogalaxy and on my phone the Audiogalaxy app.

All of my music is in iTunes which is how Audiogalaxy works. The helper app broadcasts your iTunes library for access via the app (or web browser).

This all allows me to listen to my library from anywhere. The android app is pretty slick too. It probably could use an update to bring it in line with the newer Google holo UI, but it's feature rich.

Both iTunes & the Audiogalaxy android app scrobble to Last.Fm.

Thanks for your help. It seems that a lot of people who want this solution use a media server. The thought of leaving a PC on 24/7 at home doesn't really appeal, as does the cost of a media server (although I'm sure a NAS probably isn't much less).

I might try looking for a cloud based media server - even if it is a premium service. Thanks for the recommendation of audiogalaxy, maybe this will let me do what I need on a cloud based media server if Winamp won't...
