Any point waiting to get S3 upon JB release?

Hi guys,

New to the phorum, but I've been doing a lot of reading on Android and the S3, and am ready to pull the trigger. I have been an iPhone guy and was planning to upgrade my iPhone 4 to the 5, but I was not impressed at all with iOS 6, and the device itself only minimally delivered, so off to Android I go.

Just one question that I can't seem to find answered already:

Is there any point in waiting for the JB release before buying the phone, so that it may come preloaded with it from my carrier? I'm in Canada and will be upgrading via Rogers Wireless, but I've also read there may be a possibility of carriers besides EE in the UK getting the new colour finishes and perhaps the quad core chipset. Any truth to this?

Is there any other reason I shouldn't just go out and get the damn thing already? I've already checked it out at the store and played Gangnam Style in the middle of the store on it as well as 3 other phones, and I felt the GS3 showed PSY's phenomenal moves the best.

Go with it. Enjoy every moment of using it and when JB comes, it will be a quick OTA update and you will have it. Do not bother with waiting for the 4G one in Europe as it may or may not be comatible with your carrier.
 
No, I'd suggest you to buy it now. Most of the phone that are going to be sold after the release of JB will be still preloaded with ICS, until they start producing new batches of GS3. Still, this regards the GT-I9300, any other variants, such as the Americans and derived, will be getting it much later.
 
I'm not as hopeful about OS updates as everybody else. Android updates take forever. Don't be surprised if it's December and only the Russian users on OAO have pushed out the JB update. To only 1/3 of S3 users. In Siberia.

Here's my take on it:

If you really want JB and want a faster version of the S3 with a bigger screen, wait for the galaxy note 2.

If you really want the S3 but really want JB, you can always root. I plan on doing this next summer when Android 5.0 is out and we're still on ICS.

Or just get the S3 and be grateful if we get JB by the end of the year, but expect it to be released by summer next year. Really, ICS is fine- besides, Touchwiz so heavily masks Android, I'm not sure if we will see a cosmetic change. I'm curious as to how project butter will work with Touchwiz and how they will integrate Google now.

Or how about the Motorola Razr maxx hd? It's got jelly bean.
Unless you are set on the S3, why not look around?

Much later? Its been said time and time again that Jellybean will be delivered to the masses in October as a whole. Probably Euro in the early part of the month, and the rest of the world towards the end and maybe even early Nov. That doesn't sound like much later to me.


@ OP- Grab the GS3 now, phone is great as a whole! Jellybean will make it that much better....Enjoy.
 
Thanks for the replies thus far.

I had considered waiting for JB only because of the speculated week 40 release (~oct. 7) based on a leaked document stating such. However, I didn't think about the NA versions of the S3 not having the update right away for new handsets.

I really want to get the phone before mid-october, which is why I don't want to wait until later in the year for the razr hd. It's tough because there are so many speculated new android phones pending release but if I keep waiting until later in the year, there will be more phones coming soon after that.

I have no problem with rooting the phone--in fact, I've been jailbreaking and modifying iOS since 1.0 devices, and now the android seems to be the future of true customization. Now that I see one can run JB if the phone is rooted, I may just head out and pick the S3 up today

Welcome to the android community where new phones comes out every 3 months! (or so, give or take)

I recommend keeping your eye on one phone you like and going for it.
If you don't upgrade phones every year, then pick one you can live with for x number of years. I myself can see me using the SGS3 5 years from now, not a problem.

And yes, get it now, no point in waiting. the updates will come when they come and wait will probably not get you JB out of the box.
 
Just picked up my new white S3! It's pretty awesome so far. Thanks for the help again, now time for me to read up on the forums for cool stuff.
