voice and data call while on 4g thought this was not possible on sprint cdma network

hello all wow thats all I can say. all these readings show no voice and data call over sprints cdma network on any phone. so I did some research call sprint yes I know crazy right they said yes on 4g, then I went into a sprint store again crazy right how come sprint does not seem to really know anything about their phones crazy right! anyway the store said no. So I tested it I made sure I was on spring 4g network. my wifi off I placed a call told the person to keep talking, I pressed on my internet icon on my phone and guess what it worked a voice and data call over the sprint network while on 4g. my question is why is this not toted by sprint like it is by att? and why does sprint techs do not have a strong definitive answer I mean come on this is a easy test! anyway just wanted to spread the word and see if others have same result. pulling my hair out grrrrrrr and guess what I'm bald!

test it out folks remember turn of wifi! make sure u r getting 4g.

lol your kidding right?, making a voice call and still be able to get serf the internet on sprints cdma network this was not possible for a long time it seems now it is on 4g. hello is this thing on!? hehehe
 
The company that's now going by the name "AT&T" (SBC) isn't very nice to its customers. It shouldn't be surprising that they hype stuff that's not revolutionary as if it it is. On the other side of the coin, there's nothing intrinsic to CDMA that makes it impossible to multitask. Ditto for Android and the Linux OS that Android runs on.

I think the bottom line is that cellphone users don't need more ways to be distracted from driving their cars, or looking before stepping into traffic and killing themselves. If you really and truly need to do multiple things simultaneously on the same phone, yes it can be done. No big deal, really.
 
When the original HTC EVO 4G came out, Sprint was saying no simultaneous 3G & voice, but one of the features they touted about Wi-Max 4g was the simultaneous voice & data. They later enabled simultaneous voice & data on 3G after Wi-Max was in place, so they've had it for a while.
 
I have the Epic 4g Touch with Sprint and you can NOT have simultaneous voice and data while on 3G. You CAN while on 4G, but not while using 3G. I just verified this by calling a long recorded message, then while listening to the recording, trying to use my web browser. When using 3G I get the "web page not available..." message. When using 4G there is no problem and the page loads quickly. This has always been the case.

I believe the CDMA network that Sprint (and Verizon) uses can NOT transmit data and voice at the same time, period. But the Wi-Max 4G that Sprint uses is not CDMA, it is a separate radio built into the phone that picks up the Wi-Max signal. Your phone treats it like Wi-Fi and can handle data and voice simultaneously. When Sprint switches to LTE 4G, they will do the same thing...build an LTE radio into their phones to pick up the LTE 4G signal.

By the way, T-Mobile and AT&T both use a different type of network called "GSM" and GSM networks CAN handle voice and data simultaneously at 3G speeds.
 
I stand corrected. I thought for sure I had heard that it was enabled on 3G after Wi-Max was in place, but this article seems to confirm that it was not. With Sprint's new LTE network, it is now enabled for 3G also:

According to this thread on XDA Developers, it depends on if the phone has multiple antennas for voice & 3G. If it does, it can do voice & data simultaneously. The Galaxy S3 is one phone that does have multiple antennas.

Well you certainly have some interesting notions about how you think that CDMA, "3G" and "4G" work. I'll just say that you're entitled to your opinion and leave it at that.

I've noticed that Android hackers who are more accomplished than I use 3rd party software to replace most of the Sprint control software, and report much better control over their phones than is possible with official Sprint software. I know it's too much to expect to be able to allocate as many EV-DO channels as I want just by adding a 3rd party app. But I do have an ace up my sleeve.

Since I'm a Vonage customer, I can place VoIP calls over the data channels, which could free up at least one EV-DO channel, at least in theory. ;) EV-DO is far superior than the TDMA 3G schemes in this respect because it supports an unlimited number of data channels in the specification. Using the radios that carry the more packet oriented data streams makes this method work even better, but they're not a necessity as some think.

I wouldn't put much stock in those articles if I was you. Their authors seem to be under the mistaken impression that "vioce" and "3G" are completely different things that operate completely separate from each other. In fact the EV-DO service that's often called "3G" uses the exact same channels as voice traffic. Data sessions simply multiplex several channels, not unlike how a T-1 line can multiplex several BRI channels together to make a single network "pipe".

EV-DO is backwards compatible with older IS-95 voice phones, but uses the EV-DO level it supports for both voice and data. It all goes through the same radio, so having two antennas isn't going to create some sort of magical separate pathway that's only for voice or data, as one article implied.

I remember when EV-DO was new, and there were relatively few data users. Back then the EV-DO Internet experience was a lot nicer, even with less "bandwidth" to work with. Although newer EV-DO revisions offer the potential for fatter data pipes, in the real world the number of available channels for data are becoming more and more scarce as the demand for mobile Internet goes up.

The important thing is that there's nothing in the CDMA2000 standard that prohibits simultaneous voice and data connections. If that's happening, it's a choice made by the carrier, handset maker or phone software vendor.

Where was I mistaking?
 
I'm not sure about the S2, but on my LTEVO, I know for a fact I can talk while surfing the net with 3G only.
