On my friends S3 if he holds a song in music player he has a set as option in the menu to make it a ringtone, I do not have this in my menu, we are on different carriers could something like this be carrier restricted?

I have the sock music app on my Verizon S3 and I get the "set as" options right in the app. I just start a song, pause it and hit menu and get the "set as" options.

Is your friend using stock? The stock player on mine only allows it from settings, then set as
Mine is us tmo

yes his is stock as well as mine, even the manual talks about this "set as" but its not in mine when i hit the menu botton or hold the song for that pop up menu

Im on Rogers in Canada my friend is on Telus

well i found another music player app in the play store and it does allow be to set as a ringtone but I really like the look of the default Muisc Player better.

Have you tried starting the song you want to use in the stock played, then pausing it, and then tapping the menu button? The "save as" option should be there. In mine, it shows there when the song is paused.

thanks but this does not give me the set as option either

If you use Poweramp it allows you to set any song as anything you want.

thanks Android Music Player and Rocket Music player also give me the function to set as ringtone, i just really like the look of the stock music player, oh well ill have to stick to a 3rd party player for now

I don't know about this specific feature but to answer a broader question, yes each carrier can skin their phones differently and add/remove features.
