Is the S3 4g Enabled

Jaythered

Lurker
With EE about to launch 4g in the UK, I am wandering if the S3 is 4g enabled. And if so, as I have an EE account and sim, will my phone automatically go to the 4G signal or do I have to do something to make it work or even pay extra?

Thanks in advance.

You'll need the GT-i9305 International LTE version. You will have the GT-i9300 currently.

This seems somewhat ridiculous. Will I need to purchase an entire new phone to access 4G in the UK?

The "4G" that you get in a non-LTE area is LTE? There are other technologies such as WiMax which also claim to be 4G. Actually by technical definition, 4G still doesn't exist. Neither LTE or WiMax are actually 4G. So when people say "4G" I'm always a bit sketchy about what they actually mean.

I dont think we'll be seeing the numbers they claim, especially 1Gbit in the near future...

Logically speaking it makes sense what 4g, but if you want to get technical. Then sure, today's 4g isn't 4g.

I think it should be 50Mb to be honest.

The technical definition is miles off (literally years if not decades) being feasible. That said, I'd find it easier to discuss it using LTE and WiMax instead of 4G as 4G pretty much can mean anything more than 3G. I've even seen HSDPA refered to as 4G :(

Carriers use 4g to distinguish it from their current 3g technology. Sure, it isn't true 4g by definition, but everyone knows exactly what's being referred to and it actually cuts down on confusion to non-technical folk

LTE, WiMAX, and hspa+ are all considered "4g"

well I think people call it 4G because thats whats displayed in the status bar

Yes but that doesn't help if someone asks "Is my phone 4G compatible?", and that is my point.

When Heisenberg123 says "I get 4G when im not in a LTE area", I don't know wtf that means... as far as I am concerned, that could mean anything.

Yea, here in Canada, in an LTE area, the SGS3 shows LTE. Outside of that, it displays 4g, which is actaully HSPA+ here and not LTE.

Thanks for clarifying

On my GSM international S3, I get H showing for HSDPA and H+ for HSPA+
