UK Jelly Bean update anyone tried?

Yeah loads of people tried it. People have also been doing this with ICS updates since the phone came out. Sure, its not without risk but what is nowadays?

Im getting impatient so might flash the update tonight, still don't understand why theres such a wait between regions when we are using the exact same phone.

To reduce the Load on Samsung servers and communications systems. If Samsung had the power to push an update to every S3 in the world at once, it would probably cease to be called Samsung and would probably rebrand itself "Skynet"

I don't think I've ever been pushed an update by Samsung, it's always done over kies.

I highly doubt the servers would struggle much if it was only available over kies.

Kies is still pulling the same update from the same source. the only difference is it's not terminating at your phone via your carrier. Rather via your Broadband / USB. But the initial source is the same.

They sold 10 million S3's by July hadn't they? 30 million expected by the end of the year. How big is the update? Lets say its 250MB (No idea, random guess).. and there are 20,000,000 S3's at this point (another guess). That's 5,000,000,000 MB data. If that all hit at once, even with a Gb line (1000 Mb internet connection), my estimation is that it would take 462.96 days for that download to complete.

My maths.....

20,000,000 devices
x
250MB
=
5,000,000,000 MB

5,000,000,000 MB
x
8 (convert to Mb)
=
40,000,000,000 Mb

40,000,000,000 Mb
/
1000 Mbps
=
40,000,000 seconds

40,000,000 seconds
/
60
=
666666.666666667 Minutes

666666.666666667Minutes
/
60
=
11111.111111111 hours

11111.111111111 Hours
/
24
=
462.962962963 days

Even if Samsung have a 10Gb line, thats 46 days (which looks more realistic)

Although my maths could be out :smokingsomb:

How many of those users are even aware of kies? How many users actually use Kies? and how many of them check for updates regularly?

The answer is a small percentage, I know allot of S3 users and they don't use kies, I know this because I'm the one that ends up updating their phones for them months after the updates are made available.

Point is we are enthusiasts here and we are the minority, we want to latest updates asap, but most users really don't care so the demand on the server would be nowhere near as high you're predicting.

You may be missing my point.

OTA updates NOTIFY the user of the update. Most users accept it when they get notified. Whether you use Kies or OTA, it comes from the same place. So they roll it out by region. This way everyone who gets notified of an OTA update OR plugs it into Kies will be able to get the update. If it was open to everyone in the world, no one would be able to get the download due to congestion. Hope this clarifies.

Anyway it doesn't matter if I am over estimating my figures or not. Its about potential. Its called "Capacity management" in I.T. terms and it basically means do not offer a service you cannot support. You must have the capacity to fulfill the potential need and that potential need is 20,000,000 devices. The Maths speaks for itself.

If they use the same server then why don't I get updates OTA? I've NEVER got an update notification on my Galaxy S3 even when an update was available on kies.

It won't be the same server. It will be clusters and nodes. The lines will also have fail overs. Still, there will be load. You're underestimating just how much data this is.

Anyway I won't argue. You asked a question and I answered. I am not the oracle. I only know what I know. I know as much as I have said on the subject and no more.

Well it wouldn't be pushed to 20 million devices anyway, as the international version numbers would be allot less than that. Obviously I agree pushing OTA updates to even half that value would be a nightmare without some kinda of restrictions.

But I just don't agree that the same would be true if it was only rolled out with kies which is the only way i've able to update my S3 so far.

Anyway, I'm going to install jellybean now. :D

well I updated to jelly bean as above and all works ok runs very smooth and quick. After reading loads of forums I see many people say that BBC iplayer will not work due to loosing Adobe Flash Player but I still have both and all works ok.

I'm not that convinced with the polish jellybean firmware available, seems glitchy to me and I've had a few apps crash.

Nova launcher is very buggy with this firmware, pratically unusable.

BBC has released a new beta app on the market, BBC media player which allows you to use iplayer. Just make sure to use the mobile version of the website once installed and it should kick in when you select a program.
