Can the Nexus 7 connect to a projector like an iPad can?

True, but you can use wifi (no idea if the projector can utilize this, but certain TVs can):

Not sure if there are any, surely there are, but if your projector is DNLA compliant, then you can use a DNLA app on your N7 to send video, pictures, etc to the projector. I do that with my TV.
