Thought it would be good to open up a thread for new app discoveries, favorites that are working well, questions about apps some of us may not have used yet and problems with those we are using.

I'll go first. Dropbox. Seems like a cool concept. Two-way syncing to the cloud, between droid and PC with a webpage you can get to from anywhere. The December "upgrade" seems to have users up in arms. Mucho complaints! Some users are having success using a front-end "client" called DropSync Pro on top of DropBox to make it more functional and make up for the deficiencies.

Anyone have experience with this? Do you install DropBox first and then the DropSyncPro? Does the DSP integrate automatically?
(one glitchy thing is that you can't buy the DSP on the market. You have to go to the website and pay with PayPal.)
But DSP is getting pretty good reviews- unlike DropBox.

I have no idea what the dropsyncpro is. I just simply installed dropbox app to load some files over.

Found GPS Test which offers some attractive tools for tracking number, position and signal strength of GPS satellites. Very nice interface and pretty cool app.

Dropbox is nice, especially when combined with Downloader For Dropbox. It makes copying files between my devices so much easier because I don't have to plug them into my computer anymore. Just upload from one and download to the other.

Also, for those who listen to a lot of music like I do, if you download the Equalizer app, it has all kinds of presets that actually make the speakers sound better than your typical cell phone speaker. I personally prefer the "pop" preset on speaker.

What's the Downloader do that regular DropBox does not?

Well, unless I hadn't looked hard enough, I never noticed an option to download a file directly from the Dropbox app.

Hey there Blackdog, check out WiFi Analyzer. It shows you any wifi hotspots around you, their signal strength, ssid, etc., and whether they're open or secured. It's great for quickly finding the best wifi hotspot to use.

Another interesting app is GPS Essentials. Haven't dug into it much yet, but it gives you tons of info about you GPS situation.

These are free on the Android Market.

Yeah- I have this. Very useful.

I'm using CamScanner (free) with pretty good results. Uses camera to shoot, edit, clean up, and save as pdf, then share via email, dropbox or whatever...or just store on device. Very handy.

I have pdf copies of license, passport, etc. I also use to pdf receipts/reimbursibles for work. Also to shoot a copy of a magazine article at doctors office, etc. And copy restaurant menus, technical manuals...lots' of good uses.

I have just started using the ICS graphics app from the Samsung Apps store ( free) and GO Launcher EXGO Store GO Widget...these apps will make your SGP look like the ICS... is very hot... especially like not that the apps are loaded in alphabetically....a must try... alsu love the Pimp My Screen app.. very HOT.. best , Ted

I have Go Launcher EX and cannot download the switch widget. I get a message that says it's incompatible with my device. I can download the other widgets (haven't downloaded Twitter yet) so why not Switch?

Probably because it contains a control for the cell-phone-radio...which our players do not have. Generally you won't be able to dl any phone-related apps.

Yep, Blackdog you are correct. I tried to load whatsapp but it was not in the market, as ti needs a cell phone number to register. Works fine on my phone.

stay away from the frostwire app, it takes control of the wifi and does not let it shut off andalso causes freezups

Some good apps I've been using lately:

StumbleUpon: Sort-of "best of" app. you enter your interests, from photography to geology, from blues music to parenting, from graphic design to art...and the app throws you samples of stuff from the web. some interesting, some not. you vote thumbs up or down. Pretty cool.

TuneIn Radio. Streaming radio, broken down by country/state/region...all the way around the world. pretty cool! Some streaming issues but apparently improving.

MyFitnessPal: Calorie counting...works pretty well. big database of foods.

K9 email: Now that I've got it configured, it's awesome. Takes a bit of head-scratching and forum-searching because developer has absolutely no documentation of website help, no on-app help, and does not answer email. but, it's free and very powerful...MANY options and parameters.

SketchCamera, Paper Camera and Square Camera...each fun in it's own way.

Out-of-Milk: Awesome app for grocery shopping. Create a list of normally used stuff in your pantry...make grocery lists from that...more than one for different stores if you want...and scan items to get price into database if you want...pretty cool.

G-Strings: Free guitar tuner. Nice.

Hi Blackdog709,

I'm using SamGal5 for video playback.
For mkv videos of 8gigs, I had to split them to under 4gig each.
Boilsoft helped me split the videos,
and MXplayer plays back the mkv and vob videos.
Other than that,
the folders .android_secure & LOST.DIR on the sd cards I use
confused me no end.
Videos/audio stored in the lost.dir come up fine, and are playable,
but anything I store in the .android_secure are invisible.
Adding the prefix '.' to my videonames also makes them invisible.
Cheers

I have "No Root Screenshot" which allows you to take screen shots of your device regardless of what app you are in.

Another cool app is "MirrorOp Photo Sender" play and control your pics slide show on your sgp and have them display on your wifi connected pc. No rooting required.
You do need to have their receiver app running on your pc first.

I also recommend Mapdroyd and Navdroyd for gps only (no wifi required) use. The open system maps are free and fairly detailed. Just downlosd the maps you need.

Hey all. New to Forum.
This question falls under the category of "Unsupported File Type."
Not sure if this is the right place for my question and if it is not, clue me in.
Just got a Galaxy 5.0 mp3 player with WIFI and I am really liking it.
Maybe someone can help me with a problem I have with it. I have been able to move a TV recording as a file to my player. However, I get an Unsupported File message when I "click" to play the file. The Tv tuner card I recorded with is made by Hauppauge and is the WinTV-HVR 2250 Dual TV Tuner. The format is MPEG 2-TS. Any tips or suggestions as to how I can make the recording compatible with my player so I can play it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Tim

Hi,
AllShare is great for streaming video, music or photos to my tv via wifi.

navfree is ofline satnav app for the UK and ireland, maps are about 400MB, but it never fails to get me back from my destination, unlike google maps.

FB reader is a good e book reading app, plus it has a text to speech free download option.

TubeMate allows me to download any videos from youtube and save them to the built in memory, it's not from the marketplace though, just google it, and it works a treat.

In the Uk TVCatchup allows me to watch live tv via wifi. It has all the standard UK channels.

WiFi Analyser allows me to get the best wifi signal where I live, as there are a lot of routers causing interference, and my internet is very slow.

MX Player is by far the best video player I have found, plays everything and controls are easy to use.

I used WA and it's a great app to survey what is available or find empty channel, it still required input.
If you are looking for something that automatically finds & connects to open hotspots Wifi Buddy beta is small, got good reviews w/ 3k+ users, I am trying that one.
Android AdvicesBest WiFi Scanning App which Auto Connects to Open WiFi Networks & Access Points - Android Advices

Another I have not tried yet is WiFi Jumper. Anyone try that one?

There are some paid apps that might be better, WB is OK, I am still learning about ports for phone service.

Yeah- I have this. Very useful.

Try MX Player. It's in Google Play.
I was in the same situation and I had to convert my videos no mp4 to get them to play on my SGP 5.0. Not anymore! MX Player plays everything. no more converting!

I just got my new Galaxy 5 Player and found your post while searching for helpful hints. I purchased BroSoft DVD Ripper, loaded on my PC, popped my DVD and converted it over to the .MP4, into a file on my PC. I then changed the name of the saved .MP4 file to the name of the movie and copied it onto my 32G Micro SD Card. I then loaded the Micro card into my Galaxy 5 player and I've been watching movies ever since! I was confused at first, but BroSoft tech support was wonderful and they were very helpful. Be sure to always mount and unmount your SD card though. I didn't and lost the movie I had copied over for the first test run. Hope this helps. Jen

Been a while since I checked in here.
Recently I've started using Flipboard to view mobile versions (mostly) of various news and special interest topics. Great format.

I'm going to check out Tasker more. Utility program to write apps and configure darned near everything on your android device.

Wanted to check out SnapSeed photo editor but they only support ICS onward!

Still use CamScanner quite a lot- that's a very nice app for free! "scan" and generate pdfs for saving on device, sharing, sending to dropbox...

got Evernote but have not been willing to put time into figuring out if it's worth it.
