vlingo beta

You don't have to. Just disable the vlingo keyboard and you'll still use the stock. Easy way to do it:

Tap "vlingo" on the widget>keyboard>open keyboard chooser>touch input

Viola, no vlingo keyboard

You can also go to Settings > Language & Keyboard > uncheck Vlingo.

I've been using the app and still use Swype.

I am not using the keyboard, just the app and widget

Don't know why I didn't think of this before...probably because I have no prior experience with Vlingo. :o I installed it when I got the beta email, spent ten minutes with the keyboard, decided I preferred Swype, and uninstalled.

Now that I know better, I've reinstalled it, kept Swype as my keyboard, and used that widget like nobody's business.

That is strange that you even got it to load. I tried to download it a couple times on my phone directly from the link and it downloaded, but when I tried to install it said not compatible with this phone. I am still on 1.5. Guess I will just have to wait for the update.

Ditto. I'm running 1.5 and I couldn't get it to install either. I wonder if the fact that Frisco could install has any correlation to his not having issues that many others do....

I just installed on v2 2.1 and it says every time "cannot connect to server please check your network and try again." Other times it sits there "Thinking" then "request timeout check your network and try again"

Interesting

It kept doing that to me as well. I uninstalled it & went back to the stock keyboard.

I had the same problem this afternoon after not having a problem with it yesterday. I'm thinking that there is an issue going on with the Vlingo server side of things. I didn't know it but it must look to the vlingo server for speech to text translation. I know that it translates MUCH better than Google has for me.

ok i made a boo boo on ym phone and i can not access home screen to get to settings. i THINK my only option is to launch vlingo by holding the search hard key while in my browser and launching settings from there. can i do this and what is the voice command for it....

halp people...

scratch that, i got it....whew

i was looking at a factory reset there i think....

like a dummy i installed helix launcher 2 (ONLY FOR NEXUS) thinking it was just the 2.1 req.

WRONG

i set it as default in home switcher and hit home...

FC loop, over and over, FC FC FC FC

i managed to hold power and get the shutdown popup in between FC's and powered down

started back up, FC FC FC FC

so i plugged it in and dragged down the notif panel between the FC's and got into my email app which stopped the FC's

then i figured out that vlingo was set as a long press in my search key so i did that, launched market, uninstalled helix2, and i am back to normal now...

I've tried both 'open settings' and 'run settings'. In both cases Vlingo took me directly to the settings menu.

When I am in an application lets say like "Text".... How do you get it to work without going all the way to the application to start it?

When you're already running say, text, I think the only way for vlingo to work is of you are using the vlingo keyboard. It has a mic on it for voice recognition

Just installed, runs like a dream. Kept swype as default keyboard, didn't need to adjust it in the settings. Also, when I test txt'd the wife, it went right to Handcent, and went through without a problem. Vlingo FTW!!

I don't use the widget for that reason. I set the "long press search" option to open vlingo. works great, no need for widget

I dunno i tried it for a couple hours yesterday and it seems pretty limited right now. I'm sure it'll evolve into something better but for now i just don't have much use for it. In a few months i'd like to see where it goes, i'm sure once its out of beta it will gain some useful features. My biggest complaint is whenever it didn't know what to do it would open yahoo search.

Ah, something is wrong then. It seems to work just as well as Google Voice search, possibly better. They may be the same thing, I dunno, but I know they both found the name of my unknown bacteria from Microbio last fall. Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Try saying that. The voice recognition picked it up then (Google Search) and did so today as well with vlingo. It also picked up all the swear words I put into it, and I know some very obscure ones.

But I digress. It very advanced and when I searched the name of different restaurants with their native country's words as their names (Indian stores/restaurants, Greek stores and restaurants, etc.) it got them spot-on.

While this was also the same with Google Search, as is it was incredibly accurate, it's a nice breath of fresh air since voice to text on messaging apps is horrible. It's not even worth trying it on Handcent.

it has problems figuring out the difference between "jess" and "jeff" for me. honestly i said call jess 5 different times, each time slower and more clear, and everytime it came up with jeff...which is funny because when i say text jess it has no problem

Hope you don't end up leaving Jeff a homo voicemail and sending Jess a text about the boys' night out at the local titty bar. ;)
