Data and Voice Coverage in SF Bay Area

I am considering moving from Virgin to MetroPCS. I'd like to know your experience with either voice or data in the San Francisco Bay Area. I really like the voice coverage of Virgin (Sprint), but data is not all that great. How has MetroPCS worked out for you? Any specific areas that have good/bad data coverage?

Thanks

I actually just drove from san Francisco and I had great service there. I was right smack on downtown too, but it seemed to work fine every other area in the bay. As a matter of fact, I had better service at my motel than I do at home lol but it's still exceptional coverage nonetheless. I have the SGS3 for metro and I practically had 4G most of my trip, which was 6+ hour drive! I'd definitely do it :-)

Thank you for a great feedback. I found a review on LG motion that was done in SF and their take on the data/voice reception seems to agree with your experience. Congratulations on owning the SGS3, it is a great phone. Now the big question is SGS3 and fewer $ in my pocket or the LG Motion?

Thank you

Thanks! It really depends on your need. I'm a heavy user and a big screen lover so the S3 was perfect for me. It isn't cheap but it's well worth it. Plus I believe the S3 will be $100 off this week til the next so that could be a bonus. The motion is a really great phone for its price. The way I see it, it's a win-win on either phones :)

I agree 100%. The difference will be $250. Still, I think the SGS3 is so good that it warrants some serious consideration. Even if I get the Motion, it is going to be a major improvement over my current phone, the LG Optimus not so Elite.

My son just changed from the Motion to the Samsung Admire. He loved his Motion. He only changed to the Admire because it was an early Christmas gift.

We live in the East Bay (Livermore) and I've called all the US and never had a problem with my coverage. We go all over the whole Bay Area to concerts and such and never had any call problems no matter where we've gone. We've been Metro users since their first year and I've only had three dropped calls. All three were while going through the Berkely Tunnel.

That's great. Thank you all for great feedbacks. I guess it's goodbye Virgin and Hello MetroPCS.

There is one thread written by aovaici who is leaving MetroPCS because of issues with texting. I hope that's an isolated issue and not too prevalent as I do rely on texting a lot.

Hey, saw your thread and I thought I would comment. Their service coverage is unbeatable for their 4G coverage and voice coverage and price. The only issue I have is their texting, a issue that is shared for a few metropcs users that I know, perhaps all of our phones just suck or something. I have the LG Connect, it was their nicest phone for a while and I really was planning on getting the S3 but now I think I will be switching to ATT or something else, which means a extra 40-50$ a month for at least two years so it's a hard decision, but I am just tired of my texting issues. I really like metropcs, they are one of the few companies that don't price gouge you with rediculous fees and their service is great overall. I'm really having a tough time switching over to ATT knowing that they charge 20$ a month JUST for texting, but I'm at the tipping point. Good luck with your decision mate :)

Also I forgot to mention.. overall about 5% of my texts are recieved late (5-1hour) and 1% are recieved in the (1hr-24hr range). So it's not a huge portion of my texts, but it makes conversations very tough sometimes.

Thank you for taking the time to shed some light on this thing. I'm sorry to hear about your texting issues with Metropcs. It sounds like your experience with Metro is generally a positive one. I've experienced the same thing with Virgin. I was happy with them until recently. I had AT&T before Virgin (Sprint) and I had a lot of problems with dropped calls, delayed voicemails and texts, so I'm not sure if AT&T/Verizon are necessary going to be the answer either. Virgin is great for voice and text and just horrible for data. There is no reason to pay for bad service. Hopefully, MetroPCS can resolve the texting problems for you so that you can stay with them.

I am considering moving from Virgin to MetroPCS.

Sounds like they have a great service and they offer several really good phones to choose from. I think the LG Motion is a much better phone than anything Virgin has to offer and SGS3 is one of the top phones offered by anyone.

I finally made the jump from Virgin to MetroPCS.

So far so good, the data coverage is fairly decent in my area. At home I get a mix of 1x and 4G, but then with Virgin it was mostly 1x. Away from home and around town it is mostly 4G with average speeds of 2.5-3.5MB, which is plenty fast for me and much faster than anything I ever got with Virgin.

The LG motion is a much better phone than my LG Optimus Elite and ICS is sweet.

The Virgin reps that I dealt with were all very nice, but lacked enough knowledge about the phones/services to be helpful. I liked using the live-chat with MetroPCS to resolve a couple of questions I had regarding my voice mail and setting up my account online - it was very efficient.

Thanks to all those who chimed in - your inputs were very much appreciated.
