Root [HOW TO](gaining root)unlock, downgrade, and achieve s-off with htcDev

I installed that gingerbread rom and it's the same thing a 100 forced closed popups and even clicking settings gets forced closed etc. Have you seen something like this before? Can the memory really be ruined by not using the phone for a certain amount of time? I'll install the first froyo from page 1 but i don't expect any different results.

doesnt seem likely that something unfixable has failed just from sitting, but sure appears that way. if you havent done a factory reset in hboot with the stock recovery in place, try that now, prior to installing another recovery.

i would factory reset in hboot, then run the froyo ruu. tho i fear you are prolly correct that the results may be the same. :(

wish i had some better news or advice, but if the factory reset and 2 different ruus dont straighten things out, there not much else i can think of to try.

Yeah it's a strange situation, even trying to factory reset with the stock froyo just reboots and skips recovery all together. O well thanks for trying, it will be just another for parts incredible on ebay soon.

sorry we couldnt get it up and running :( good news is that you can get inc 1 and 2s cheap on craiglist now. thunderbolts and even rezounds are also starting to be reasonable in price :)

Thank you very much!! I was afraid to root for years because I didn't understand the tutorials, but now this one worked and I'm so happy. Very nicely written, I applaud you.

Hi, Scotty85 -

I've been reading this over and over again for the last three days and ready to actually try it. Sad to say, I cannot start. The links for miniadb_inc and PB31IMGare no longer available. Do you know of alternative links I can use to download them.

Thank you.

My laptop running Ubuntu seems to have dificulty recognizing or "seeing" the DInc after I do the adb reboot command. By seems to have dificulty I mean that the fastboot devices command gets no response.

working fine for me. you may need to adjust your browser/firewall/antivirus settings

no idea, sorry. im not very proficient with linux. is the phone in fastboot when you enter the command?

HEY! IT WORKED!

AWESOME, THANKS!

and i did it on a MAC! most of it, anyways. I was having trouble getting myself onto the correct ROM, RUU, 4.08.605.2.

i needed to do that on windows. other than that, i got it all done on my mac, with the help of "./" before every command, the android sdk, and you guys! and my good friend who is a programmer.

I have included the whole Terminal session, in case it is helpful to someone. and there are a LOT of weird mistakes in it, but the gist is there...

is this guide still working? I'm gonna try it today!
I'm using HTC Droid Incredible A6300
Gingerbread 2.3.4

software 4.0.8
please reply soon

Help! I'm trying to save my OG Incredible. It is enough phone if I can get rid of the Verizon bloatware, but it won't properly sync calendars when the low space warning is active. So I am trying to root it.
I tried to download the PB31IMG.zip file, but the windows system says it's not a valid file.
The first zip file in the instructions downloaded without issue. Are these instructions still up to date?
I'm hoping the first quarter of 13 brings a new phone that's a little larger, yet not gigantic.

yes, these instructions are still up to date. the "cannot open, not valid" error you get when windows is unable to open htc's signed, zipped files is typical, and nothing to be concerned with. you do not need to open or unzip the PB31IMG downgrade, just check the md5 of the zip file and make sure it matches the one provided.

the inc 4g is a slightly larger screen(4"),better resolution, and a dual core s4 processor, and its here now. might check into that if you want to upgrade now,it may fit your cirteria :)

So I've been stuck trying to work with an Incredible all day.

It's already rooted 2.3.4 with S-On still and the following info:

Hboot 0.92
Radio: 2.15.10.07.07

Doesn't list at the top Locked, Unlocked or Relocked like my Rezound.

Has Clockwork Mod 5.0.2.0 on it for recovery.

I'd like to start using ROMs on it because it's not an active line anymore, wifi only. But I can't get any fastboot commands to run other than fastboot devices which does list the phone successfully.

The other commands, even fastboot oem get_identifier_token return:

(bootloader) [ERR] Command error !!!

Since it doesn't have a stock recovery on it, I can't run the RUUs to fully wipe and reload the system.

Any ideas?

Well, nevermind... started playing around with Rom Manager. Assumed you had to have S-OFF to do ROMs, guess not. Installed Skyraider and it seems okay except it's still prompting that there's a Software Update from Verizon.

i would pretty strongly recomend against the use of rom manager. it is an app,in a working rom,and as such, will not be available to you in all situations. you are much better off doing things manually in recovery... rom manager will eventually leave you stranded in a bootloop or non working rom, where youll need to manually fix things in recovery.

without knowing your current build number,it is very possible that an ruu does not exist, should the need ever arise for it. i feel it is safer, and much worth the efforts to become s-off.

if you allready have root access, there are a couple ways you could procede:

1)install the htcdev compatible hboot and unlock it,so you can unlock it again on froyo. you can skip steps 2 and 3 since youre allready rooted and have a recovery.

2)you can simply download the files and enter the adb commands to alter the main version,so you can downgrade to froyo. since you will not be able to install the htcdev hboot on froyo, youll need to run unrevoked 3 TO achieve root and s-off. perform step 4,then ignore steps 5,6,7,and run unrevoked 3 in their place. :) you can use step 8 to finish things up.

hope that helps.

This is a great guide and worked perfectly for me. Phone is now unlocked, s-off, with radio updated and I've installed a custom ROM. However, now I can't make any calls with the phone. I dial to activate and nothing happens, then it tells me activation failed. Why might this be?

no idea why that would happen. equally strange,a friend didnt use his inc for a few weeks, then had the same issue(wouldnt activate). i had him run a stock ruu,and then it was fine.

you may want to make a backup, then run an ruu. let the phone OTA to current if it wants to. then try and activate again. hopefully it works this time. but if not,at least your stock and in a good postition to call vzw and jump thru their hoops to manually program it :)

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but now that I'm rooted, how do I make it stop telling me to update to gingerbread. I've done everything in the first post except update hboot and the radio because my md5 thingies weren't the right number, and I didn't really feel like messing with it.

Flashing a new rom is the best way to stop the ota notifications. Check out the finishing up section of the op for a stock rom link :)

Just flashed liberation before I saw this and I just got another system update. Actually this is one I used to get before I rooted, about a software update that's older than my current version so I could never install it and get rid of it. Suggestions? :x
