In regards to battery life what is the "Android System?"

I've had my GS3 for almost a week now and on many of the days that my battery dries up early the biggest usage when I check both the stock battery monitor and GSam is Android System. Today it was 40% of my usage on my battery. Screen was second at 18%.

So what is this and what can I do to maybe reduce it if possible?

Something is probably causing a wake lock, which won't let the phone sleep when the screen is off.

Check out "GSAM Battery Monitor" from the Play Store and see if it can pinpoint the runaway app or process. EarlyMon turned me onto this app and it's a good one. Most times it's an app thats improperly set up or a rogue process that needs force stopped.

Also you might want to try and power the device completely down, then reboot. If your phone has the ability, hold the power button down until it reboots, might reset the cache and undo the runaway app.

The "System Tuner" app shows the %CPU utilization of the individual processes within "Android System".

Try comparing the information in GSAM Battery Monitor to the %CPU Usage information in the Task Manager in the "System Tuner" app with the "kernel" and "system" items turned on.

In GSAM Battery Monitor on my phone if I click on "Android System" it shows that "Android System" includes the following processes (plus other processes):

settings
system
surfaceflinger
com.android.settings
com.android.portal
datacollector
com.android.systemui
com.android.systemui.screenshot
com.android.keychain
servicemanager

Then if I go to the Task Manager in the "System Tuner" app and turn on the "kernel" and "system" items the %CPU Usage list includes "Android System", "surfaceflinger", and "systemui" all in the same list. Something is inconsistent there. On most phones surfaceflinger is usually one of the processes with the highest usage.

This is a good practice, I do this myself.

What I was referring to is a hard reset by holding the power button down until the phone reboots.

On the EvoLTE if I hold the power buttin down for 10 seconds it simulates a battery pull since the battery is non-removable.

I don't have an S3 so I'm not sure what the proper button press combo is needed for this.
