Help Make Edge Go Away Please

I have a Samsung galaxy S3 from AT&T. I live in a remote area where high speed Internet is not an option. However, the area does have a 4G At&t signal (4g only, not 4g LTE). The galaxy S3 receives the 4g signal. While the phone is picking up the 4G, it's often used in our home to connect to a PlayStation for online gaming. This has worked fine for the most part. The problem that is being experienced is that the phone keeps switching from 4g to edge. My question is this, is there anyway to turn off edge on the phone? I want it to only receive the 4G signal and not drop down to edge. Currently, it seems to prefer edge even though 4G has a solid signal in the area.

Without having your variant of the s3 I'm not entirely sure what the options will be on this setting but there should be one to use 4g only. Go to settings, more settings, mobile networks, network mode.

I have the Tmobile version (I'm on stock Jelly Bean 4.1) and my choices in the settings menu you are referring to are "LTE/GSM/WCDMA", "GSM only" or "WCDMA only". SO, only options to switch network type, not data service type.

If the AT&T version is similar, the OP might have to either get into the programming menu (don't know how to do that) or take a look at some of the apps out there- there might be one that offers some kind of toggle for edge.

gsm covers edge and the wcdma is only 3g so that doesn't look like it's an option there.

Check out the app "phone info" it may have that option.

The WCDMA would be the 3G/4G. Selecting this will cause it to only use the 3G/4G connection only. If you loose 3G/4G connection because of bad reception you have no signal at all.

I am on T-Mobile which is GSM and mine uses WCDMA for it 3G/4G data. ATT may be different with their GSM.

Choose WCDMA only and you will be fine, until you find yourself in an area without WCDMA coverage, then you can switch it back to GSM/ WCDMA auto.
