Fix or Upgrade? - Help a friend out

Hello all,

Cliffnotes: My pregnant wife's phone broke the day after Black Friday/cyber Monday sales ended....what to do?

Full Version: I'm sorry I do not know where to post this because it is kind an off topic rant/need help thread. I know there is a lot more important things to worry about at the moment but here is my scenario.....

My wife's Sprint Epic 4G Galaxy S (slider version) just fell out of her purse and the screen shattered. She is approximately 50 miles away at work and this would not usually be a big deal but she is 8.5 months pregnant with our first child. So she can not be without a cellphone in case she goes into labor. We also do not have a house phone in our apartment for her to use there.

Money is a bit tight because of the ton of furniture/items we just bought friday through yesterday with all the sales around town/online. She needs a new phone and we are not eligible for a discount/upgrade until January.

What do you guys/gals recommend we do? The last time she cracked the screen on this thing Sprint charged us $100 replacement fee. This phone is so outdated I can't see spending so much on a refurbed dinosaur. Does anyone have an idea where the best deal on an upgrade through sprint is for an S3? I know it is the day after all the sales ended.

I am off to work right now on a double shift so I will not have internet access until tomorrow morning at 8:30am since I am leaving my cellphone home for her tonight. Hopefully I can go somewhere first thing in the morning and get her a phone. I just called my local Sprint store now and found out they can do the S3 for $199 with an upgrade :(

Thank you for your help and sorry again for the rant.

First off, congrats on the upcoming newborn! :)
Sorry to hear about your woes. Are you on a family plan? Is there any chance she could use a pre paid plan for the time being via Virgin, Boost or Criket?
You can certainly look for a used phone. Swappa is a good option:

An S3 for an upgrade is a great option. If you're looking for something cheaper, even used, you'll be hard pressed to find something that much cheaper. Hope you find a good solution.

Congrats on the one on the way!

If your upgrade is in January Sprint will probably let you buy out the last month for $25 or so. Then you would have an upgrade. I think Sams club or costco had the Galaxy S3 for $49 or something like that with an upgrade.

Call Sprint and they will probably help you out on getting your upgrade early. I wouldn't repair the Epic again though.

Edit: If it's a boy "Nathan" is a great name.:D:D

I wouldn't fix it because you are so close to your upgrade. There's always deals on cellphones so I would save your upgrade. For the time being, I would either ask someone to borrow a used phone or buy a prepaid phone.

In this instance, I would upgrade. I would also not care what it costs.. Sometimes credit cards are a necessary evil.. But with your wife this close to delivering your baby, I would do whatever it took to get her a reliable phone, cost be darned.

Wow, thank you all for replying!

I was released early tonight from work because we didn't get the big snow storm everyone anticipated....just a bunch of sleet and rain.

So here is the update: My wife being the absolute awesome woman that she is realized she can make calls through her cars bluetooth using the voice commands. So she was not stuck with out a phone per se during her commute. She could only call contacts that her bluetooth/phone recognize her saying. So that took the anxiety off us both during her foul weather rush-hour commute home tonight.

So I just got home and realized I still have my BlackBerry Bold that recently upgraded from to my Galaxy Note 2. I almost gave that BB away to a close friend but said I should keep it as a backup at least until the baby gets here. In hind sight I am the man hahaha. So a quick call the Sprint customer service and she now has a brand new BB Bold hooked up and ready to rock.

So all the stress for nothing, situation averted. She's ok with using the BB until either we fix her Epic or she is eligible for an upgrade in a month or so.

Sprint said that a screen repair is $35 at my local store and if they can't fix the screen the $35 covers an entire refurb replacement. I hope they are right.

I would like to thank you all again for your kind words and advice!!!

Nathan...cool name dude, Naters is a killer nickname too. ;)

But we are going with Aidan Daniel...I'm Daniel and Aidan is going to be a new name in my very large Irish family. Aidan is an exact translation to "Fire" in Gaelic.

Everyone is excited for us since we waited to have kids and didn't rush into it all. My brother is 3 years younger and he has 5 kids lol. So now we are all anxiously awaiting our first son.

Have a good day and thanks again for the help.
