Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Yeah, I was thinking that with all the Google apps that will be available, I want to have a very "slimmed down" ROM that only contains content that I want/use, plus any add-on apps that I know I would want included in the base ROM.

Have you created your own ROMs? Not me...but want to start wit the EVO.

Anyone else?

Like you I am use to flashing my HTC Touch Pro. I am interested in rooting the evo and checking out custom roms. They get off all the extra crap and run a lot faster, doubt it will make the Evo any faster though, it's pretty fast looking at the video's.

Hey guys! The phone is going to be released June 6th or 4th right now. I talked to my source right now and he said anything earlier would be a surprise. Anything later would signify an upgrade in OS.

Thanks for your support

Thanks for the early morning update Jackson, You rock!
June 4th is a Friday and June 6th is a Sunday. Does Sprint usually release phones on Sundays? Seems to me like a very odd day to drop a new peripheral.
I'm a big fan of suprises ;)

I can't decide if the OS note is a good thing or a bad thing...

The latest and most serious rumor about the Incredible is that it's now slated for April 25th release. I only mention this because it's the only competition to the EVO 4G at this point in time. I see this as an opportunity for Verizon to keep or snag more customers because hardware-wise it will be an awesome phone. I mention this because it speaks to the timing issue. If Sprint could have brought the EVO 4G to market before the Incredible it would, in my opinion, give people time to realize the benefits of WiMax and cross over to Sprint. Obviously not everyone would make this choice....but if the reviews are highly favorable some people would reconsider going with the Incredible. Once the Incredible releases, it will most likely have awesome reviews. Verizon will get a lot of people signed to new contracts and the EVO release will be a bit diminished.

Now, with this said, I think that if Sprint comes out with bold and aggressive advertising just before the Incredible launch...it might be enough to give some people pause. Advertising that boldly states all the advantages of WiMax and the EVO...AND that gives a more specific release date might hold people over. Still, there is great advantage to getting to market first. The more I think about it the more I feel Sprint really must come on hard and fast with the release of this phone!

Well your source has been real good so far. My friend was saying the original release date was going to be the end of may. They have 2.1 working good right now and are playing with the idea of releasing it with 2.5. And also might release it with 2.1 and then do a OTA update not long afterward. they found out on monday, that the release date was unknown. let us know if you hear anything that confirms what my friend said.

It's hard to find a Pre/Pixi owner who don't have a negative thing to say about them :D. Poor Palm, I really thought they had this one. It's so great, yet so far.

Actually, I am a Launch day (of last year) PRE owner, well up until 2 weeks ago. My old one finally got a deadly crack(From my own fault), but I was able to get it replaced for free.

But let me tell you, this new PRE is phenominal, the build quality is a 1000 times better. If Palm would have had build quality like this in the beginning, they never would have had soo many returns.

As far as this new PRE, I have no negative comments towards it at all....I LOVE WebOs and its capabilities. I still feel WebOS is the best OS out there by far.

BUT, the EVO spec wise, blows any phone I have seen so far out of the water. And I have always been a fan of HTC, but I have no clue about Android....makes me really wish that Google or HTC would just buy Palm now, and save it from its eventual downfall. If the EVO could have had WebOS on it, it would have been the #1 smartphone in no time.

So lets not all knock the PRE, if the quality build they have now would have been out in the first place, Palm would be back on its feet.

Palm actually reminds me of the old Sega Dreamcast, great software at the time, ahead of the times...but didnt have the hardware to keep up against Microsoft and Sony....and now Sega is just a software company....maybe something Palm needs to think about.

That's what I did with my pre. Sold it on craigslist while it was still worth something.:D

I didn't sell mine, I simply traded to a Hero :D. I like the hero, but love the OS. Can't wait to see what 2.1 has to offer, would like to see some real 3D games from gameloft or EA..... I was really surprised coming over to Android I wouldn't get those types of apps.... I had them on the Pre... Someone says it has to do with the SD card not being secure... is that true

Thanks for the early morning update Jackson, You rock!

Yes Sprint always releases phones on a Sunday.
But does pre-orders on Fridays, sometimes Thursdays.

Hey forum peeps,

Thanks for the update supersonical. Where have you been lol.

Yes sprint released some phones on Sunday.

many people here said that sprint must release EVO before June to succeed.
I agree to this at some degree but from long term prospect, this EVO and Wimax will have to swim up stream. and sadly I think EVO/Wimax will not survive the sunami caused by LTE and Apple.

even Clear Wire and Sprint acknowledge that they like to and can move to LTE easily to reduce the risk of Wall Street downgrade.

at work, many people who had iphone said they will buy the new iphone HD/OS 4 this summer. Others who don't have iphone like to buy one. No one even mentions about EVO, except myself.

releasing a few months early will not have mass impact on long-term prospect. Unless sprint has some magic to change the game rules, sprint will have no choice but join LTE and get iphone on their network, even Verizon CEO is now begging Apple for iphone.

if iphone is available on verizon, sprint will lose customers fast. they will do whatever it takes to have the phone.

sorry for the negative post but people like us are minority. Joe Consumer will decide, not us.

I'm afraid I must agree with your post. Joe Consumer make up probably well over 95% of the market, with the rest of the techies, people in the industry making up the rest. Most people do not care about what the specs are save for the camera megapixel (since higher = better quality or so the myth goes). Regardless of how the Evo will trump other phones in the specs department is really irrelavent to most since all they care about is user experience and thats where Apple excels better than anyone.

Compared to each generation of the iphone (1st gen, 3G, 3GS) there were plenty of other phones with better specs and better promises. the 1st two generations couldn't even do basic things like copy and paste, video record, or even the MOST basic thing like MMS but yet people bought them like they're the best thing since sliced bread. Why? because Apple knows how to entice with its extremely smooth and seamless user experience. Hell, the 1st gen didn't even have an app store! Just because you like Apple does not make you a fanboy. If that were the case, then everyone on this forum would be considered a fanboy of a different type, no? Why bash the competition? Its competition that brought us where we are today. How stupid would it be if everyone carried the same phone or the wore the same brand? I personally like varieties and it has always been competition that spurred new innovations so I hope Apple comes out with an awesome 4th gen.

I sincerely hope the Evo would succeed, but I suspect it won't really put too much of a dent in the up coming iphone sales regardless of how much earlier it comes out. I was pretty much set on the 4th gen iphone, and I have never used one until I saw the Evo, but specs aside, if it didn't have the HTC sense on it, I would probably pass regardless of what it had under the hood. Its never the best spec'ed hardware that sells, its the best user experience. IMO of course.

Ok I feel much better parting ways with my berry now. Thanks for all your help.

Let me drop you a couple of things to consider about leaving your BB.

1. Not sure if Android Exchange integration gives you full access to your Global Address Book. BB and Palm do. Last time I tried Android, it didn't. Not a show stopper for me, because I save all my GAB entries that I really need to my personal address book.

2. Dialing conf calls, or numbers with extensions. BB does it well. for instance, in your BB, if you have a number entry that looks like this: 555-555-5555 x123456789# BB hyperlinks the entire thing. when you dial it, the main number is dialed, then once connected, you get a popup that asks: Dial 123456789# ? All you do is click and you are in your conf call :) # is usually what you have to press after entering a conference ID, depending on what con call system you are using. This rocks when on the road and on BT headset. BB and Palm again do this. Palm only recently. Android did not link the whole thing together when I tested it.

3. Email search. UGH! This one was my show stopper, last Android I tried. I have thousands of emails a month and constantly need to sort through them to find something, when out and about. BB does it and now Palm as well.

If you are a heavy BB user and for business, consider these issues before making the jump, unless Android future versions have it solved. I have my fingers crossed! I want an Evo so bad. If anyone here knows if those are fixed now, please do share :) :)

Some of you disagreed with me when I said the EVO isn't likely go on sale for 2 or 3 months, but I was only trying to be realistic. When Sprint said the EVO will be released this summer, I have to believe that's what they meant. Summer starts June 21 and ends September 22, however most of the dates I've read at the news sites are saying the EVO 4G will go on sale in early summer; June or July.

Just today, Jackson said the EVO "might" be released the first weekend in June. If it is, that's 2 months form now, so I'm not too far off. He also gave us a date of April 16th to look for TV and Internet promotions and possible release date and pricing. If he's right, and I hope he is, that's only 9 days from now, so why don't we wait until at least that date before we get all worked up about it.

Regardless of when the phone is released, I'm definitely waiting for the EVO. I would like to see it released ASAP, but I don't want it before it's ready. Autosuggestion mentioned that the phone wasn't functional at CTIA and it wasn't. For one thing, it had Android 2.1 which doesn't have the WiMAX radio, and that's why there weren't any 4G demonstrations as Las Vegas, even thought they are a 4G city.

We read just a couple of days ago that the EVO will come with Froyo, which is the next version of Android. It will probably be Android 2.2 or Android 2.5 and will support WiMAX. This change is one of the reasons I think the release date could get pushed back and it might take more than 2 months.

Sprint announced at CTIA that the phone and the OS were still being worked on and that was only 2 weeks ago. I'm sure it's going to take awhile to get Froyo working and tested. By the same token, it's pretty obvious that things are moving forward rapidly.

I don't care what Apple does in June. They're not going to have 4G and they're not going to have hardware that even comes even close to the EVO, because they won't have the bandwidth. The only exception I see is the iPhone coming to Sprint for the WiMAX service and that's a possibility.

There's one person in this thread saying the EVO/WiMAX phone will not survive the iPhone/LTE tsunami. I would agree that the iPhone outsells ALL ANDROID PHONES COMBINED by a big margin, but the iPhone isn't going to hurt the EVO 4G sales. I feel very strongly that the EVO is going to have a very strong following and people are going to be flocking back to Sprint to get it. I don't care if it's June or July, this phone is going to be very much in demand. As far as the WiMAX/LTE part, it's sort of a mute point. RiverOfIce, who is most knowledgeable of any of our forum members when it comes to WiMAX/LTE said LTE has very little bandwidth compared to WiMAX. The way I see it, there's no contest. AT&T and Verizon are not going to run WiMAX off the road. For anyone that's really interested in the EVO 4G, you ought to read RiverOfIce's posts: post #1, post #2, post #3. I find them very much worth reading.

No, I meant if the device did not come with the Sense UI (like Motorola and Samsung does,) that i would pass on it. Because if it didn't exist at all, I wouldn't be comparing it to whats out there.

This past January, word came of a new device called the Supersonic that would run on Sprint's WiMAX network. It was compared to the HD2 with a large 4.3" screen and it would run Android with the Sense UI. I was hoping something would be said about the Supersonic at CES that month in Las Vegas, but it wasn't even mentioned. I started researching WiMAX and at the beginning of February, I posted all the information I could find in the Sprint thread called "WiMAX 4G/3G/CDMA and the HTC Supersonic".

The next trade show was the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Spain. We heard that HTC was going to be announcing new phones on February 16th, and I hoped the Supersonic would be one of them, but it wasn't. About the same time, a short video of the white version of the phone got leaked and that prompted Covert_Death to ask the admins to create a Supersonic forum, which they did. Then they moved my WiMAX thread to the new forum. Even after that, things stayed pretty dead. The only other person I can think of that was championing the Supersonic besides Covert_Death was TwoSpirits and that's why I like having him here with us.

About the middle of March, I started a new forum poll that asked, "Are you giving up on the Supersonic?" That started generating some interest, but shortly after that news reports started saying the Supersonic may be introduced at CTIA on March 24th. There were only a few threads in this forum at that time, so I posted a message in each one asking if anyone wanted to start an official Supersonic thread, since an announcement seemed emminent. I volunteered for the job if no one else wanted it, but basically I was nominated for the job anyway. TwoSpirits posted a message telling the forum members that he was going to combine several of the threads and that it would become the "Official HTC Supersonic / WiMAX Thread".

In my own defense, I want people to know that I'm not the enemy. I want this phone as much as anyone else does and no one has really been waiting longer for it than I have.

Bill I signed up to be a part of this forum because of you. You really kept this thing going when we had nothing to go off of. I am glad you are here and doing whatever you can to keep the conversation relevant. This thread is as large as it is because of Bill.

Hey Superonical, Hope you had a good easter!!
Thanks for your new update and always keeping this thread current w/whatever new info. you get/find out!! I hope that those dates are true and that june is the month that blesses us with this beautiful device!! I really want to give android a chance being that i've always had windows mobile!! Heck I even went as far as putting the htc desire android on my touch pro 2 last night so I can get familiar and prepaired to the htc evo LOL... and it works good to...I must say though, Windows mobile might not be the best but its def very good! no other os/phone lets you run a different os on it!!

Anyways like always thanks a whole lot and look forward to any new news u get!!

I like your post and I agree w/you on what you said about sprint and what they need to do!! I wrote something along the lines what you said as well!! So I guess at this point in time its all a waiting game and lets cross our fingers that April 16th is indeed the day the airwaves get HTC EVO fever and we get a lot more concrete info to wet our palettes with :p

Hey there's always gotta be one person to start the fire that draws in the masses right...lol now we have this thread to call home where we can talk and share ideas/info!! Doesn't get any better...well it does once we get our EVO'S and then we really can start pouring our hearts out LMAO :D

Bill,

You need no defense, this thread is strictly speculative debate. If anything Sprint should offer you a commission for the fraction of sales you alone will generate for the Evo.

However, there is clearly two debates happening here. One involves technology, the other economics. Based upon my original post, you can see I am not interested in the first........i already agree that Wimax and the Evo are superior products with much to offer the enthusiast. The details of comparing LTE and Wimax is geeky chatter for us, not our affectionate caveman Joe Consumer. Some majority (someone guessed 95%) of the market is only interested in simple, safe and familiar choices. That mindshare consists of Verizon, Att, Apple, Iphone, etc... Even you seem to agree that Apple could put a smiley face sticker on the 3Gs and call it a new iPhone, and it would sell like crazy. Economics is what will determine the success of Sprint and this new product.

Let me make my argument much clearer. As with any firm with a new competitive advantage to offer, Sprint must face an additional competitor....time. The time value of money, the time value of choice, the time value of consumers navigating this declining American economy, etc...all have much more bearing on Sprint's success than any technical argument I've heard thus far. Just my opinion.

The fact that Sprint has publicly acknowledged the option to switch Wimax over to LTE compatible speaks volumes. They already have the backup plan and are quite cognicent of the phenomenal hill they must climb to avoid the coming rush of iphone/Verizon/Att/LTE over the next year.

I still stand by my original argument that getting the phone and network in the mind of the consumer earlier is the only chance for this excellent endevour to succeed over the long term. No matter the advantages of Wimax and Evo, you must first convince Joe that he needs it when his alternative choices are so easy and satisfactory.

Great thread guys.

just wanted to point out how well T-mobile has done with the HD2 and its a Windows Mobile 6.5 device.... People flocked to it and it sold out not once but twice everywhere!!! shit sold out like hot cakes..... now enter the HTC EVO which is exactly the same thing as the HD2 but 100x's better.... now do the math!! I'm talking about people that never had a WM device etc...they saw the htc HD2 and how t-mobile priced it and people went nuts saw how beautiful it was and boom it sold like it was the best thing next to sliced bread!! :D

I'M JUST SAYIN'......
