Help camera shutter sound effect off?

I had this shut off before the cupcake update, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to do it again. Tried settings in SnapPhoto, default Camera App, and even the G1 main settings menu, cannot find how to turn this off. I'm not a fan of the fake "shutter" sound that digital cameras make, hopefully they didn't take this functionality away.

Any ideas?

Don't know what build your on but for mine it's
stock camera app >
menu button >
settings >
shutter sound

yeah, there's only two things in my camera settings and it's:
Store location in pictures
Select video quality

And yes, I'm in the camera app. Those appear to be the only settings for both the camera and video app. Bizarre

yeah im on cyanogens cm3.5 build so hard to say because it uses the HTC camera app which is FAR better than stock... i'll check around and see what I can find....

Yeah, I've never done any rooting or manual updates, all of mine have been straight from OTA.

No such animal in the main settings menu. All that's in my main settings menu is the links to submenus (Wireless Controls, Call Settings, Sound & Display)


and if you're talking Sound & Display -- that "silent mode" silences the entire phone, I'm just looking to disable the shutter sound.
 
In the standard camera app for Android you can simply turn down your volume setting all the way to eliminate the shutter click.

It will say "Ringer Volume", but it controls the camera shutter volume when taking photos.

That silences the whole phone. I want to get rid of the shutter sound also, but I don't want to have to silence my phone every time I take a picture just so I can get rid of that annoying sound
 
I think a law came out which stated all phones had to have shutter sounds or way of indicating a picture has been taken to stop people taking photos up womens dresses. If you get a 3rd party app then they usually have the option to turn sounds off, just not the native app the phone comes with.

It just isn't true. My Blackberry was able to be silenced, and from what I am told the Droid Eris can be silenced.
 
I find that for silently taking pictures (of my cat without waking him, for example), the volume button does the same job as the aforementioned "Sound & Display" setting. Yes, either the "Ringer Volume" or the "Silent Mode" checkbox should do the job, but the volume button on the side does even better on the fly (provided that you are not playing media at the time.)

On that note, I've gotten pretty good at hitting pause, volume, and play, depending whether I'm listening to music and trying not to get blasted by ringtones, or trying to not miss a call when my headphones aren't on.

I hope they did not waste their time creating this law. People should not take pictures of others without their consent but a law certainly will not change anything.
 
Rooted, right? Dig around in /system/multimedia/UI and look for something like camera_click.ogg or similar. Delete it. No more annoying shutter sound.

Oh, they did waste their time to make this law sadly. I seem to remember it was Europe and/or Japan that made the law. I don't think it was passed in the US, at least not on a national level. A lot of manufacturers make all their phones compliant with it just because they sell the exact same phone overseas as they do in the US.

This works, but anyone know which sound file is used when the phone gets focus lock? It's a more subtle sound, not as annoying, but I still want to get rid of it.

Neither the volume nor the silent setting affect the shutter sound on my i1. SilentSnap does not show in the Android market for me, meaning it probably requires a higher version of the OS than the one I'm stuck at. SilentCam does work, though it saves a preview image so it's a lower quality than the camera's actual capacity.
 
maybe the filesystem is mounted as 'read-only'. You may need to 'remount' it 'rw' read-write before changing anything.
 
There is an app for rooted phones called Make Camera Silent, it can also disable the low battery alarm sound.

found the cameraclick.ogg file but doesn't want to delete? had anyone encountered same problem?
