Help Kies (on Mac 10.6.8) Won't Update

Mohaver

Newbie
My Kies desktop program won't update to to 2.0.0.12113_6. It keeps prompting me for it when I open it up, and I can try to force the update in the preferences. However, every time I prompt it to update (using either method) it open 'kiesupdate' for a split second, and then it just closes, with no update! I've tried a lot of times as some people said just have patience with it: to no avail. I've updated my Java (which was outdated) but this didn't solve the problem either. I've tried deleting Kies and reinstalling it about 10 times now, and nothing seems to work. I'm tearing my hair out here and I can't figure out a way to update Kies so I can get this darn Jelly Bean update for my S3! Help! I'm begging you!! :banghead: :(

I had the same problem. Fixed it by accident. Turns out my issue was the firewall here at work. I tried it last night just on a whim from my house and everything well smoothly.

What kind of firewall do you have? I'm not sure what kind I have but it's never caused any other issues, so I don't see why it would cause an issue with Kies.

I was all excited tonight to find out JellyBean was finally available.. 3 hours later while ripping my hair out instead of sleeping; not so excited. First up tried on my WindowsXP system - says you need 'at least 500MB' for Kies / update.. C drive is pretty full, but I install all programs to E which has 300+GB free, no problem, right? Kies installs to E just fine, but just like Apple crap-Tunes, downloads the install package to C regardless of what the registry tells it.. No problem, I have 1.2GB free. Wrong again. Update sucks down all 1.2GB (never seen Free space: 0MB before!) and starts to crash PC as I frantically free up another couple megabytes. Finally finishes unpacking and starts installing - can't connect to device.. Great.. Restart, and it starts to download the WHOLE 2 hour install package again! It's 12:00 am! Cancel......

Fine, I'll switch to the Mac. and let it run overnight.. Says it's supported, right..? Nope. Downloaded version of Kies says phone is up to date, same "newer version" message pops up, but won't update! Been at it for almost 4 hours now trying to upgrade this thing, I'm going to throw the phone and the Mac out the window along with JellyBean! Love the phone, but this update process is a whole 'nother layer of Hell!

No Firewall here, so absolutely no idea what's going on... If anyone figures out a way around this I'd love to hear it! I don't want to buy a new operating system or computer just to get a new OS on my phone.. :(

I rarely touch Mac's - is there a way to find the install file online for the newer version of Kies and directly install it, rather than going through the 'update'?

Tell me about it. I was so excited about JellyBean and then heard it wasn't going to be an OTA (wtf... this is a complete step backwards!!!) and knew this would be trouble. Kies is such a crap program and I am so frustrated with this whole thing! Someone please help us or suggest alternate routes of updating! I might just root and then install JellyBean through that. Screw AT&T and Kies- I'll bypass them if I have to.

Never got the Mac working with Kies.. It took trying on 3 separate Windows computers at work before one of them finally was able to connect to the phone, complete the download, and update the thing! Then once it was updated, it would no longer connect to Kies. My really good Windows 7 machine said something about "incorrect USB mode" - tried all suggestions I could find online, nothing worked, computer saw the phone but Kies didn't. The PC it did work on was a stripped-down bare bones machine with an Atom processor, like the kind you mount behind a monitor up on a wall to run a display.

Still interested if anyone ever figures out the Mac OS problem, would be nice to be able to update at home rather than spend 6 hours trying multiple computers at work.. Well, would be niceer if it was OTA and it just worked, but apparently that's asking a lot. :o

Kies really is a piece of crap!!! Great phone but BS software program. Using Mac 10.8.2 and get update to the new software. Come on Samsung!!

Okay everyone. I've installed an earlier version of Kies, and it detects my phone just fine, like it's supposed to. The only problem now is that I can't update this version to the latest version (it says it's up to date) and subsequently I can't update to Jelly Bean. This does prove, however, that my phone isn't faulty and I don't need to factory reset, it's a problem on the Kies end and with their newer software not working. You guys should all try this and see if it works for you. Just follow these simple instructions to install the older version:
Kies for Mac and Mountain Lion not working? Here's a solution [From the Forums] | Android Central

Keep searching though people! This problem is not yet solved for many of us. Thanks.

Hey there, I just found this forum after many, many attempts to get this Kies thing to work. I am using mac v. 10.6.8. on Snow Leopard, and when I first heard about this upgrade to Jellybean via Kies I thought it might be a slight inconvenience, but this is just ridiculous. When I first downloaded Kies for Mac it connected my phone just fine, but said there was no firmware update to Jellybean. But after downloading a newer version of Kies (as it told me to), my phone just shows "connecting", but never actually connects. I am a new convert to Android and was loving everything about it, until this happened. Does anyone have any more suggestions? solutions?? Unlikely, but thought I'd ask. thanks so much!

I'm in much the same boat, friend. Recent convert from iPhone to Android, and loved everything about it until now. I'm also running 10.6.8 and I can't even update Kies to the newest version as the "KiesUpdate" program automatically closes as soon as it opens. I have the supposed latest Kies from Samsung's website, but it tells me to update to a newer version (which, as I said before, it won't let me) as soon as I open it up.

Perhaps a petition to Samsung and AT&T for them to release an OTA is in order?

All I know is 10.8.2 has been out for a while now and Samsung dropped the ball here in terms of not updating Kies to cover this Mac OSx version.

Also, I found that even though I had used AppZapper (which deletes all files associated with the program you wish to delete) to delete Kies, and even though Kies was not running, I couldn't use Easy Phone Sync OR Android File Transfer anymore, and I honestly thought my phone was broken. Kies, however, was the problem yet AGAIN, and the only sure-fire way to make sure it's gone is to download the .pkg and uninstall it through that. Both Easy Phone Sync and Android File Transfer then worked as they should. Again, Kies is a crap program.

could not agree with you more about kies & samsung's or at&t's decision to not allow an OTA upgrade. I loved everything about my phone and android up until this. I even dealt with the frustration of syncing music & playlists & accepted the fact that it's just not going to work like itunes. Also, Mohaver you mentioned your android file transfer not working... mine too has stopped working. It used to work fine, but somewhere in the middle of all this Kies crap, it stopped. What were you referring to about installing to .pkg & uninstalling? Thanks for your help. It is at least good to know someone else is suffering just the same.

I got the update finally on my Mac 10.8.2. Here's what I did. I uninstalled the old Kies version that I had since it wouldn't update. Went to Samsungs website and downloaded it fresh from there. When finished, plugged phone in and it found the update. I had to try it about a dozen times it would download to a percentage and then a pop up would show saying unable to connect at this time, try later. I continued to try and finally went through and it was smooth sailing from there. This is what worked for me I can't vouch if it will work for you.

If anyone tries this method post here if it works for you.

Hey maniK. Two things for you:
1) I was also frustrated and disappointed by the lack of iTunes -> Android compatibility until I found Easy Phone Sync (a quick search on Google will bring their official site up). It's a really nice, simple program that looks at your iTunes playlists and everything and adds them to your Android. Also, I use this in conjunction with PlayerPro (the trial version, as it seems to last forever for me) and transfer all the ratings, playcounts, etc. from my iTunes to PlayerPro using their really easy method. I can help you more if you need it, but it's pretty simple and I believe they explain it well.

2) More to the point of your main problem: Download the Samsung Kies .pkg (from here Kies - Sync Media, Contacts & Calendars Across All Devices | Samsung, assuming you are in the US) and instead of installing Kies, open up the disk image that appears and an "Uninstall" application will be there. Open it, and it will uninstall Kies completely. If AFT still isn't working, try uninstalling it (throw it in the trash or use AppZapper or a similar program) and reinstalling it. Hope this helps.

Sal, I'll try it in the morning as it's rather late here. That does sound promising though as the previous problem might have been that the other installed Kies weren't really uninstalled fully.

Curious to see if it works for anyone else.

Hey all I'm also incredibly frustrated with this issue. I actually managed to get JB installed on my SIII by using a friend's PC, but now I'm having a host of other small issues with the phone since the update and I want to backup my phone and do a factory reset, then re-install everything to see if that helps. The problem is, I got caught in the same update loop as the original poster (download and install Kies, start it up and it prompts for update, then update never completes, and this repeats each time) so I can't use Kies really at all now because the phone is jellybean and my Kies is still on the old version so it won't even create the backup. Going to try reinstalling for the umpteenth time. I have to be honest, I loved the phone before the problems with updating to JB and I was livid when I saw that Verizon customers will be getting an OTA update. I'm guessing AT&T didn't think their network could handle all the bandwidth many updating devices would gobble up.
