After seeing that damn metro easy wifi in the upper left corner. I was willing to do anything to has root."oh crap I can't update now because I'm modified". What ever it takes to get rid of battery eating bloat b.s. ill do it. You can always go stock. Too many people wanting root, but trying to stay stock. Get over it the gs3 will be old march 14 with the announcement of the s4. So root, mod and brick you s*** and push it to the limit. there's no fun following the rules, so make that phone do things it should never be able to do.
 
also i don't see metro giving us another ota firmware update anytime soon. Thanks to all the whiners on facebook :D
 
I've been typing code since MY Commodore 64 days and I got to say these folks on these forums and Facebook are enough to make me puke.you know who you are and that is no senior members. I am old enough to be a senior citizen mentally and I appreciate all that Shabby and others have contributed to make these forum worth while. hopefully as I become more familiar with the coding of these phones I can contribute more than my opinion.

There should be at least one more OTA update: a fix for the "sudden death" issue, which is supposedly coming out after this 4.1.2 update.
 
If you want to root this way, I would still recommend flashing a MetroPCS recovery image. Using USC's recovery will still show as "custom" in download mode.

Where can I find a MetroPCS recovery image for 4.1.2? (that can be flashed via ODIN, I do not want CWM/TWRP on my phone)

What is "USC"?
 
Thanks. I've been trying to get rid of the "modified" device status. I'll try it out after watching Young Justice.
 
Thanks. Applied the MetroPCS stock recovery.

Rooted with SuperSU.

Flash counter is 0.

Binary is official.

Device status is normal.

Future Samsung OTA update is possible.
 
Not sure when, but my device status reverted to modified. XDA has several discussions on how to change it back to normal or official, but nothing has permanently worked.

It seems using ODIN to flash anything may irreversibly alter the device status of the phone. Someone needs to work on an exploit because ODIN really does not work as well as an exploit rooting for people who just want to root phones and have no interest in custom ROM/kernel/theme/whatever. ODIN does not keep the device status intact.

Oh well, I'll deal with the problem when I get an S4 and resell my S3. Hopefully there is a way to change the device status back to normal, otherwise it will decrease the resale value.

It reverts to modified when it detects root if I'm not mistaken...

Hey there :D yea regarding odin there's no way to bypass the modified status since flashing anything to phone trips the flash counter also root is the reason for a modified status. Flashing the full tar is the only way to put everything back to stock and status back to normal but flash counter on download mode will show at least a single digit for flash counter count. :D

I have Triangle Away, which resets the flash counter.

Before updating to 4.1.2, my phone had root access but the device status was normal. I think it's because I used the DebugFS exploit instead of ODIN/flashing to root the phone.

Yea I think I noticed that when flashing the tar with mobile odin and preserving root when I checked status it did say normal but after updating to metropolis 4.1.0 it changed to modified perhaps we can follow this pattern to see if we can come up with something.
 
Before I updated to 421, my device was rooted (bloatware removed) and still showed "normal", here is what I did to get it that way... had Stock installed, rooted the phone, made back up of rooted stock, installed a different rom to try. looked at the status and it showed Custom... didn't like the rom, so decided to revert back to rooted stock. rebooted back into recovery, wipe cache and all, and did a recovery from the back up that I had. after I booted back into the normal operation, checked status and it showed "normal"... was able to remove another piece of bloatware, and still showed "normal". unfortunitly wasn't able to apply the 421 update because the update looked for the removed bloatware, so had to completely wipe the phone and reload stock with all its glorious bloatware...basicaly the way Metro is, unless you have ALL the bloatware there ( which means no since in rooting ) you WON'T be able to apply any major updates, unless someone here makes a work around. the minor update looked for the root status and removed it and reinstalled missing bloatware... basicaly getting the phones ready for the major update to 421.

just my two cents worth....
 
apparently SysScope and Enterprise SysScope in 4.1.2 routinely update the device status with these interesting functions...

arrayOfString[4] = "kernel_checker"

Hm.

Anyway. I switched off auto update and auto checker for updates. when we get another OTA update, I will data-wipe SysScope and Enterprise SysScope with Titanium Backup, use Triangle Away features to temporarily change the device status back to normal, temporarily hide the root, then grab the OTA update, before SysScope/Enterprise SysScope run their routine scans/checkers and change the device status back to modified. That's my plan anyway.
