Root 3G at last! But one question...

@ Yoinx: That is AWESOME!!! y some.

I am curious what PRL you are running? Also, data has never worked for me at all. Just because if says 1X does not mean it works...

No problem.
To be honest though what I posted is a bit of overkill. It's just if you REALLY the company that swapped your phone's carrier for you actually did though.

HI Guys..I'm running CM10.1 Feb 18 build on my LG Spectrum 920 4G that's on pageplus. Before flashing CM10.1, I got it to work by using an old PRL and using DFS tool (cdmatool dot com). Now I want to flash 53100 PRL (that hopefully blsmitty will PM me) but I cant seem to figure out how ???

It says to put LG Spec in Ethernet mode- Internet after doing USB debugging. How and where do I do that selecting Ethernet mode ? Pls. help.

Can't. Use the stock ROM. It's a pain but you should not be doing it often.

thanks TDm- do you mean
- I need to revert to stock ROM
- do the PRL update using DFS (where will I get option to do ethernet-internet?) and
- then get back to CM10.1 maybe M3?? real pain and most of all, I loose all my apps- is there not a better way?

Exactly.

No need to lose anything. Make a nandroid and restore it when you're done.

Yea but I want to get to cm10.1 m3 and not ur Feb 18 build which I have now . backup would get me to same place - shed I first get back to my current and then flash m3. ? Will that retain all my apps and data?

Use titanium backup and there is a selection in pro to restore from Nandroid backup

Why would you bother?

Backup the build you have now.
Install stock, do what you need to do.
Under backup/restore in CWM choose advanced and only restore your data partition.
Install the CM10.1 M3 and GAPPS
Wipe Cache.
Wipe Dalvik Cache.
Fix Permissions.

Done.

The only reason to use titanium backup's functionality for that is if you're changing roms. (Swapping between CM, AOKP, AOSP, etc). Not all of them use *exactly* the same data schemes so you can sometimes run into issues just restoring your data partition.

You made a CWM nandroid of your stock(ish) rom when you rooted/unlocked bootloader/flashed CWM correct?

IF not, shame on you.

I'm not sure that you can CAB flash since you were changing carriers... though I don't see why not.

Yeah..I messed up:(. Actually I didnt take a backup of stock - now what do I do buddy. I have a feeling that you and other wizzes on this forum will be more creative to cover my messes. Pls. Help!

Thanks yoinx. I'll be waiting and if you can also paste steps I need to do with your image.

Just so you know what im dealing with here.....

I had this Verizon branded lg spec 920 4g that I put on PagePlus. But its PRL is pretty old..shows as40000 and doesn't get more than 1 or 2 bars anywhere. Blsmitty on this forum said they had the latest 53100 PRL. I PMed him but he hasn't sent me the file..I hope he,ll do it today.

Now, I was on V7 before I flashed TDM's Feb 18th build - and after doing prll update I want to go to cm10.1 m3, I think the latest? But i do have a few apps that id rather save, only if we can. Also i Hope my bluetooth will work after I get back to CM10.1 M3 ?

Thanks for helping me out..

Hmm, I wonder if that's why it took so long. Originally, it was projected to be a few hours but then they had to keep the phone overnight. I felt so naked. :p

Hi- I pmed you a few days back and again today. Pls send me the PagePlus Perl 53100. Thanks a lot

Also Yoinx (and other folks here) I want to sync my phone with outlook.com which itself is synched with my home desktop's outlook- so there is a 2 way sync happening between 3 stations - my home computer to my outlook.com account and my android phone to my outlook.com.

I've seen a lot of users on these forum complain about CM10.1 exchange functionlity - that its shot. And I saw for myself that it doesnt work. But it does work in Stock.

I 'm asking if CM9 or Cm10 fares better wth exchange connectivity to android. If so I'd like to go from stock > flashing the PRL > CM9 or 10 depending on what you guys advise.

What I really need is exchange functioanlity, even if the other bells and whistles of Cm10.1 are not available like smoothness etc.

Thanks for bearing my questions!

You can't just use the PRL referenced here? Direct Link

That page claims to have been updated 06SEP2012... So I would assume that the PRL they link can't be all that old.

Well. Once you have a stock nandroid... You can do pretty much whatever you want. Just backup/restore/wipe/etc and reflash whatever you want. Just try different roms till you find one that works for you.

Just keep in mind. IF you want to keep your apps/preferences etc. Always restore data through advanced restore. I'd personally do this *before* flashing a new rom just in case it wants to write anything there. It shouldnt... but you never know.

Right now I'm backing up my system so that I can flash my nandroid, wipe everything personal from it, re-nandroid and upload the cleaned copy. I'll reply back once that's done.

Also, I doubt it matters... but it looks like the only stock nandroid I have left is my V8. Which was essentially V7 with bloat removed. So that's what I'll be sending.

Alright, got it uploaded FINALLY.

So, you'll want to download this file which is a 7zipped nandroid of V8 stock.

This is VERY IMPORTANT. Backup your current rom before you do anything. You should always do this. There's no excuse if you dont.

In CWM:

Wipe Cache
Advanced > Wipe Dalvik Cache
(the previous two step can be skipped, but they save a little space sometimes in the backup)
Backup & Restore > Format > Tar
Go back
Backup

Wait for it to finish. At this point, I like to abd in (adb shell) then cd /sdcard/clowckworkmod/backups do a 'ls' and find the directory that was just made. CWM doesnt get a good timestamp on this phone because of the lack of a true hardware clock. So I like to do 'mv whatever_the_new_backup_is Something_meaningful' to change the folder name. If you use pretty much anything other than alphanumeric characters dash and period... you'll get md5sum errors when you try to restore.

Ok, Good. So you have a nandroid of your current rom/data

Extract the Nandroid I linked with 7zip into your adb folder. If you don't have 7zip... sorry... it's the zip program I use. Copy the enclosed folder onto your phone: abd push V8-Rooted-Clean /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/V8-Rooted-Clean

In CWM:
Backup & Restore > Retore > Choose V8-Rooted-Clean
Wait for it to finish
Go Back
Reboot System

Alright. Now you have a rooted version of Stock V8 installed. Do whatever you need to do in stock.

Alright? Done in Stock? Cool. Reboot back to recovery.

You didn't really do anything in the rom, so no real need to backup your rom.

Restore the backup you made previously.
In CWM:
Backup & Restore > Restore > Choose your backup.
Wait for it to finish
Once it's finished, go back
Choose to install from SDcard, and choose the rom you want to install.
Let it install.
Choose install from SDcard again, and choose your gapps file.
Let it install.

Now, if you're changing rom types ( From CM to AOKP or vice versa) you normally want to wipe data/factory reset. This wipes your apps though. If you need to do that... you're going to want to use Titanium Backup or similar to backup all your apps BEFORE wiping anything.

THx a lot my friend - what and how you've helped me is truly noteworthy. I will report back when done. So adB is just to rename the backups that cwm creates- any links/ guides to get basic adb running?
Also could you chime in on exchange functionality in cm9 vs 10 vs 10.1

Just Google vs920 adb. If you ran pwnage then adb is setup in one of is folders. Really you can rename them later instead of in adb.

Sorry I don't use exchange

OK - so Im all set to do this but just some quick questions. Pls. confirm:

- When I rename the backup- it gives MD5 errors so whats the logic you recommend- "retain existing system name" add a space and then add somethign meansigful. That will not give MD5 errors ??

- After I come back to my present backedup ROM - its CM10.1 Feb 18 build. - say I want to go to CM9 or 10, I can just install from SD card and how do I retain all my apps ??
- When you say advanced restore for apps and preferenaces, what specifically do you mean?

- After I update my PRL in stock, I dont another backup ?? - where is updated PRL getting stored?

- If I'm going across ROMS like CM10 to AOKP- only then I need titanium backup for my apps. correct ?

I'm all set to roll as soon as I hear back and will report progress on exhcngae so others can benefit too.

When I ADB the push comand you wrote - it says
deamon not running: starting it on port 5038
Daemon started sucesdlly
error: Device not found

I also tried rebooting phone from ADB and it does so but then same..What shd. I do.
Can I just copy the folder to that directory in SD card using winows ??

Alright, O399, prl sent. Again, sorry for the delay but I've only been on here infrequently. Hope it does something for ya but as far as 3G, I don't think it has any effect. But of course, keep the forums posted!

I believe I had answered that somewhat in my previous post. Basically, you can use letters, numbers, dashes (-) and periods (.) without issue... As these are what CWM uses by default for the timestamp. I know for a fact that spaces will give md5 errors as the md5 command is likely not wrapping the file name in quotes, so it stops at the first space. Any characters you use beyond the ones I mention are at your own risk. If you rename a backup though and get an MD5 error... don't delete it, just fix the file name... it's most likely fine. If all else fails just name it "1" and see if it still fails md5. If it does, it's bad.

- After I come back to my present backedup ROM - its CM10.1 Feb 18 build. - say I want to go to CM9 or 10, I can just install from SD card and how do I retain all my apps ??
Going to CM9 or 10... you're probably going to want to use titanium backup or similar to make a backup of your apps and data. Here's a User Guide

- When you say advanced restore for apps and preferenaces, what specifically do you mean?
Basically, most everything you're doing in User Space is pretty much stored on the /data partition. In our case, that's /dev/block/mmcblk0p28 (internal memory partition 28). Some things are stored on the sdcard. Others go into /cache. But none of that really matters/gets affected by rom flashing. When you're switching between CM10.1 and anything else, you want to use titanium backup or a similar app. If you're just doing like you're doing now where you're installing stock doing something then switching right back. It's a little faster to just restore /data then continue on. The app backup/restore process in Titanium Backup is a little slower imo.

This is useful to know I guess... Because when you do a factory reset/wipe data what you're doing is just formatting the /data and /cache partitions. This removes anything personal from the phone. /cache is only formatted *just in case* there's something personal lingering there. One of the reason I chuckle when people insist on doing a factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache... you've already did the second two in the first step. Like "ATM Machine" :p

- After I update my PRL in stock, I dont another backup ?? - where is updated PRL getting stored?
No Idea. Personally, I don't really care too much where it's getting stored because I won't ever mess with it. This phone has 30 partitions on it's internal memory as well as the nvram. When you flash a rom You're pretty much only writing to the system, boot, and maybe data partitions. Then wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache (which I believe is just a subdirectory on the /data partition anyway) There's QUITE a few other partitions that do a lot of magic behind the scenes that we don't really need to worry about. Sorry I can't be much more specific than that. Maybe one of the dev types can give you more info *if* you really care.

- If I'm going across ROMS like CM10 to AOKP- only then I need titanium backup for my apps. correct ?
Any rom that's not the same base. CM9 to CM10 to CM10.1 to AOKP41 to AOKP 42 to etc etc. Different builds of each are usually subsets of those bases. Take the CM10.1 nightlies for example:
cm-10.1-20130418-NIGHTLY-vs920.zip
cm-10.1-20130417-NIGHTLY-vs920.zip
cm-10.1-20130416-NIGHTLY-vs920.zip

or the stable builds:
cm-10.1-20130411-EXPERIMENTAL-vs920-M3.zip
cm-10.1-20130304-EXPERIMENTAL-vs920-M2.zip

For aokp:
Nightlies:
aokp_vs920_jb-mr1_build-5.zip
aokp_vs920_jb-mr1_build-6.zip

Stable
aokp_vs920_jb-mr1_milestone-1.zip

Looks like aokp's site just has jb-mr1 which are equivalent to the AOKP42 builds here on the forum that we had before official support. Either way, from stables to nightlies of the same base you should be fine. If you cross the line on bases... backup everything via app... and wipe data. You'll save a lot of headaches from trying to fix force closes that way.

When I ADB the push comand you wrote - it says
deamon not running: starting it on port 5038
Daemon started sucesdlly
error: Device not found

Sounds like ADB isn't setup correctly OR you don't have ADB enabled in developer options on the phone. You need to go into the system menu to about phone and tap on the build number like 5 times to enable developer options. Then under developer options enable ADB, and if there's an area that says something like "Root access: Apps" Change that to include adb.

It won't hurt to just copy the folders back and forth in windows. You just won't have that ability while you're in recovery. You could in theory also just pop your SDcard out, put it in your computer and copy back and forth like that as well.

Hopefully that helps.

Thanks yoinx...very comprehensive. ASB - I had enabled everything as you said....not sure whats the issue but copy worked fine. I'm back with my PRL update.

I just hope the stars like TDM or others get the exchange functionality working as it works fine in stock- since outlook.com has a free exchange server, we all can utilize enterprise grade email, contact and calendar sync for free! And we can always backup for those concerned about MS deleting their data.

Is there a reason you don't download the outlook app from the play store?
