Remove pattern lock for Foxfi?

FatChance

Newbie
Right now I use "none" for the screen lock setting on my MAXX HD running 4.1.2. I want to install Foxfi but that requires adding a pattern lock for certificate security. If I do that can I easily switch back to "none" for my screen lock and still use Foxfi? I ask because I seem to recall that someone had a problem switching off the pattern lock after setting it up. Thanks!

I'm sure that the app is designed so that if you remove the security, it won't cooperate or function unless you have the security enabled. If they went through the trouble of making sure you had security, common sense says they went through the trouble of being able to make sure you keep the security on.

Has anyone used Foxfi and bypassed the security requirements and used this app so they didn't have to keep the pattern lock?

I could not bypass the lock requirement for foxfi. I even tried to uninstall foxfi and i was still not about to go back to "none" only lock screen setting. I ended up getting a new phone 2 days latter so I did not try very hard to solve this issue, but I would be careful if that is important to you.

Thank you. Not being able to go back to the "none" lock screen setting was an even bigger concern to me than having to keep a pin or pattern lock while using Foxfi. I haven't found a real need for tethering so I'm just going to pass on Foxfi because of the required (and apparently permanent) lock issue.

Actually, you can remove the lock. Go to settings, Security, Clear Credentials. It will ask for your security then go back to pattern lock and select none. You have to add security again if you want to tether.

Thanks a million tj115!!! In four short sentences you have fixed the problem. These forums are so weird. Most of the thanks go to people who just babble and when some guy like you fixes the problem it hardly gets squat. I am very happy to have your spot on fix. Thanks again!!!! :D

You can make it count ... go to his original message and hit the Thanks! button in the lower right hand corner of the message.

So I had my Droid X2 using FoxFi.... perfect. No lock issues or anything. Then I got my new to me Razr HD. It came washed with 4.1.1 on it. I didn't realize it wasnt updated, so I put all my apps and stuff and started using. Unfortunately...it made me make a password/pattern... Although, I have a BatPro app that disables the lock screen.... odd. At first, it didn't lock anything when I turned off the screen, but when I wanted to open something via the top task bar...THEN it made me do my pattern...WEIRD~! Then it suddenly decided to make me have to swipe after my screen was turned off. I found out I had an upgrade to 4.1.2 avail to me, so I did it.... after that... I am fine. No swipe required after screen shut off (I still have my BatPro disabling screen lock) and no pattern required from opening via task bar. I am happy as I REALLY hate any kind of swipe or screen lock because my phone rides on my motorcycle, and I dont like to leave to screen on due to batt consumption...but with gloves on, I cant 'swipe'. Its nice to just hit the screen/power button...and have it pop right back on to see if I have any messages/time/whatever..... if I do, THEN I stop and take off my glove ! So in essence...it seems the ICS version you run makes a big difference. Side note...when I was dealing with the lock screen..I looked ALL Over for another app that would do what this does...seems the only one is by SVPT...which really got great reviews, except as noted..it does not work on all phones. It IS more expensive then the paid FoxFi... 15 bucks instead of the 8. BUT...happy I don't need it... Fox Fi rocks....now with my 4G phone...I just got over 10Mbps download and 8.5 up.... not bad. I remember paying for internet cable a few years back and not seeing those speeds.... !!! Love my unlimited DATA plan....!!

Another million thanks!!!!!

I found a way where you can get rid of the screen lock and keep the certificate on AppBrain.com...

This worked for me!!

"*Some Jelly Bean phones has locked-down the WiFi hotspot feature, because of that FoxFi will ask you to install a user certificate on those phones. The side effect is that Android system will require you to set a screen lock (and only allows Pattern, PIN or Password) when any security settings is changed. There is indeed a way to remove the lock screen while keeping the certificate: set a pattern lock and try to unlock the phone with a "bad pattern" for 5-10 times, it will show you an error message, now select "Forgot Pattern?" and enter your gmail/password. After these steps the screen lock will be removed without removing the certificate. "

I copied that from the foxfi appstore page. I can verify this works.

Thanks to you and being so simple and staight to the point...I was able to delete the lock screen pin from my phone/which was a result of downloading some crappy app and then deleted and couldn't get the pin off....THANKS for people like you that actually care about little people like me....I bow to you!:)

I am about ready to pull my hair out. I have uninstalled foxfi from my galaxy s5 and cannot get rid of the lock screen. I reinstalled it but I don't seem to have a settings option in foxfi and trying the incorrect pin several times did not give me an option to enter my email address. it said I entered a wrong password too many times and had to wait 30 seconds before trying again. can someone please tell me how to do this on my galaxy s5 running Kit Kat and the latest version of FoxFi, please.

FoxFi would not allow me to use my preferred lock screen method which is Pattern Lock, it required a pin or password lock. If found this solution on another thread on this forum. Open FoxFi, press the Menu button, on the bottom right you will see an item called Hash Code. Press Hash Code and enter "nolockscreen" (with out the quotes). Now the screen lock requirement is disabled or like me you can enable the pattern lock again.

I have another work around. Install and setup androidlost. Once set up you can log in from the Web page and setup no password swipe to unlock from the security menu. I have a note 3 and it worked for me.

Galaxy S4 with FoxFi could not get rid of lock screen, tried androidlost like above no more lock screen.
You guys are amazing thanks chris

So I found another solution.
I want to use Foxfi but not have the pin code. I love the swipe and also lower half to jump right to the camera app when needed. So many times when needing to use a phone camera, had a lock code and it wouldn't open right away, and I'd miss an opportunity to take a photo. Just easier for me to "swipe" to open my phone.

So I found this from another blog and it worked perfect and Foxfi still works without using a code or PW:

If your phone runs Android 4.4 (KitKat) or above, please do the followings:

1. first make sure the FoxFi Certificate is not installed (if you have already installed it please go to phone Security Settings and select "Clear Credentials"),

2. now turn on FoxFi and it will display a message box that says "Name the certificate", below it there is a drop-down named "Credential use" which is set to "VPN and apps".
Please tap this drop-down and change it to "Wi-Fi". If you continue it will still require you to set a Screen Lock, just do so.

3. After the certificate is installed, you can go back to phone's Screen Lock settings and it will allow you to change it to "None" or "Pattern".

I was able to go back and put in my pin number and where it normally wouldn't let me select how I want to lock my screen, it now lets me "swipe" and set the way I want to do it.

Hope that helps!

I have a GS5 w/4.4 and followed these steps but the slide and pattern options remain grayed out.

I'm on a Galaxy S5/Verizon network, Android version 4.4.4. I tried everything in this thread so I wanted to make this post in case someone else had a similar issue. I still had greyed out lock screen options, and the only way I could use Foxfi was to remove the certificate after EVERY USE (completely unacceptable). Finally found this app through PDANet/Foxfi's site: http://pdanet.co/help/RemoveLock.apk

This fixed my problem 100%. I am able to use Foxfi indefinitely without ever messing with the certificate or being forced to set a custom lock screen.
