Root ClockWorkMod and Rooting

Okay, I'm about to take the dive and root my phone. From what I can tell, I'm supposed to:
1. Install ClockWorkMod.
2. Install root-stock.zip.
(With #1 being optional, but recommended.)

I also have a bit of an irrational fear of "bricking" my phone that I'm working on getting rid of.

According to some things I've read, CWM doesn't work unless the phone is already rooted. But you install it before rooting. Why is it recommended? So if something goes wrong with the rooting, you can roll it back?

I would recommend rooting and unlocking the bootloader first before you install ClockWorkMod. This way you won't accidentally brick your phone.

How do you do that? Does the Exhibit II have a locked bootloader?
I thought that if the bootloader was locked, you'd see a lock icon at startup...and I don't.

Just follow the instructions posted above in the 2nd link. You don't need to worry about unlocking bootloaders for the Exhibit.
