I'm going with Square Trade. When my iPhone got trashed, I put a claim in, sent the iPhone to them, and received a check for $500.00 within a week.

You generally have to have a homeowner's policy. I'm not sure if renter's insurance qualifies you or not. . . But you just schedule the phone on your policy for whatever they charge. The price usually depends on the cost to replace the phone (i.e. full retail), but is generally cheaper than Asurion.

Getting insurance is peace of mind basically.

My homeowners policy has a $5000 deductible. You might want to ask that question. You can get a personal articles rider to cover things like jewelry and guns but I'm not sure if it covers cell phones.

It's covered here. As you can see, it is completely separate from any other policy, so I was wrong about it being part of the homeowners policy.

Personal Articles

Personal Articles

You may have more valuable possessions than you realize. Your Homeowners Policy can provide some coverage, but with deductibles and limitations. A Personal Articles Policy can provide the additional coverage that you may need.
Some items the Personal Articles Policy may cover are:

  • Jewelry
  • Furs
  • Cameras
  • Musical Instruments
  • Silverware/Goldware
  • Golf Equipment
  • Fine Art (such as paintings, vases, antique furniture, oriental rugs, rare glass, and china)
  • Collectibles
  • Sports Equipment
  • Computer Equipment

OK, I see the Personal Articles insurance on State Farm's website. You pasted what it covers and I don't see any mention of the cell phone. So why people think their cell phone is covered under this insurance? I thought it was pretty obvious if the item is removed from your home it wouldn't be covered. Personal Articles is still considered part of your homeowners insurance.

Verizon Insurance Rates
Total Protection - $8 x 24 = $192
Asurion - $6 x 24 = $144
Extended Warranty - $2 x 24 = $48

Best Buy Black Tie Insurance
(I can't find it online for the life of me)

SquareTrade Rates
Premium Smartphone - $144 (possibly cheaper with coupons)

You, sir, are trippin' if you thought the insurance was $240.

Hmm... trippin'... naw, got work to do. Anyway, thanks, somewhere I'd read $10/month from Verizon. $8 ain't so bad, but Squaretrade sounds like the winner.

Best Buy insurance is 9.99 a month, so it is a little higher than Verizon, however there are no deductibles for anything. They don't cover lost phones though. So for someone like me who breaks phones all the time but never loses them, Best Buy is better, but if you tend to lose your phone, then Verizon's makes more sense.

90 day return, they also give free accessories with the phone.

What should I do I have a upgrade on 5/19 and I really want the phone as soon as it comes out. hmm decisions decisions

The quick answer to the original question is: Yes. Any phone that is purchased from a Verizon Wireless Communications store, VerizonWireless.com or an authorized reseller such as the kiosks in Cosco locations is eligible to have Assurion's insurance or Verizon Wireless' Total Equipment Coverage (which includes Assurion and extended warranty support through VZW) within 30 days of the date of purchase.

If you do not have either of the packages added at the point of sale Assurion can make you wait 30 days from the date the feature is added before allowing you to make a claim.

So my sister is about to buy her first Smartphone - which just so happens to be the HTC Incredible - and asked me a few questions. I suggested she come over to AF because its better to get multiple opinions rather than one person's opinion. She was intimidated so I'm proving to her that AF is easy, friendly and fun. Help prove me right!

Her questions:

  • should i get the extended warranty or the Asurion Wireless Phone Protection (WPP), Advanced Devices
  • and how about visual voicemail??
We're both going to get the phone and are wondering if we can somehow sweeten our deal with a Family Plan. I have NO experience with Family Plans and am rather clueless.

I bought a Droid on launch day and renewed my contract then. She is using "new every two" for her Incredible. Anyone have a brilliant plan or is it pretty much stick with the individual plan by the book.

I have these same questions rolling in my head.

Here are my thoughts. Extended warranty only covers if your device is faulty or fails eventually. I asked myself can this device fail in 2 years? I answer yes and the extra cost is 48 dollars over 2 years. Worth it.

Now with Asurion insurance this covers if your device gets broken or stolen. I think it covers the extended portion too. So I ask myself this - will this device eventually get stolen or broken within 2 years? me I'm pretty good with electronics so I can confidently say that i'm 85% sure this won't get stolen or broken. At the cost of 144 dollars over 2 years I question if I need this. However it is my first smart phone and perhaps someone will want to steal it. I don't know. Now it leans towards maybe.

Bottom line just ask yourself if you think you'll lose it or break it. if it's yes you might want to get the asurion warranty.

My sister in law got a new phone and within days she already broke it. If you're like her ya get the warranty.

As for visual voice mail - umm no clue what that is and i probably don't need it :)

I said yes to the full coverage as I just don't want to have to worry about the device. I said no to Visual Voicemail.....there are free options out there such as Google Voice and Youmail. No need to pay Verizon for that.

Ya i'm leaning towards asurion coverage myself just due to the fact it is my first smart phone.

I got both. You can always cancel the insurance once you receive the phone.

Over a 2 year period I think it's worth it.

Take a look at this video. At 8 min and 10 secs in you can see that Verizon Visual VM is listed as free.

That just means that the app is free download. You still need to pay Verizon a monthly fee for using their visual voicemail service.

i believe only the application is free, you would still need to give verizon your 3$ each month for it to work i believe

Visual VM-
I have to say i enjoy it on my iphone, its nice to see who left what message and to play it or save it/ delete etc by just clicking on the one you want, i despise the old VM stuff where you have to press 4 then 5 then 1 then 5 again etc, probably why i hate VM now and probably have 8 unheard VM's in my inbox, even though it is easy to use visual Vm, i find that i never do, you are probably different than i am, so it is up to you whether to use it

Insurance-
6.00$ a month
Covers damaged/lost/stolen
89$ deductible on advanced devices
so say you drop the pone 3months into your contract, shatter the screen or you left it at a restaurant etc, thats 18$ for the 3 months coverage and a 89$ deductible to replace a phone that would otherwise cost 529+$, seems like a deal to me, im very careful with my stuff and all it took was one drop and my iphone had a crack going through the screen, luckily a single crack was somehow covered under warranty and was replaced for free since then you didnt have an option for insurance on iphone

its all personal preference

Visual VM.

Don't pay the $3 a month. Either use Google Voice, or Youmail (what I currenlty use on my Storm). Both are free.

Insurance.

I had it on my Storm, but might not get full coverage on the two Incredibles I am getting for fiance and myself. Full coverage is $7.99 a month, not $6. And it is a $89 deductible and you will most likely get a refurb (it's in the contract that they can do that.) So to cover two phones for two years, and assuming I replace one, will cost $16*24 +90 = $474. You'll be able to get one one eBay for that price within a few months, and they'll keep getting cheaper.

How long is the regular Verizon warranty? I am planning on doing just a one year contract, just in case an LTE phone arrives that's worth getting next year. Should I sign up for the full insurance plan, including the extended warranty... just in case. Or is that wasting $2 a month?

Has anyone thought about the squaretrade warranty? I took a look yesterday and it was 144 for 2 years with a 50 deductible plus it covers accident but not stolen or lost
