If I download an already paid for app on my phone for free, will I be able to update? I only have one because my friend gave it to me so I was just wondering.
You stole it and now you want to update it? Piracy is not a good thing, especially with apps sold at $1 or around.
Answer to your question: Of course not!
Morality aside, the answer to the question is: Yes you will see the update in your 'My Downloads' and will be able to update it like any other app.
wrong, he did not download it from the Market. He got it from a friend.
It doesn't matter, I can assure you it will still show the update in the Market. Have you tried it? If not, how can you say it's wrong?
When he goes to Downloads in the Market and tries to update I bet it will ask him to purchase the app. Google is not THAT stupid.
No it doesn't. Upgrades are free, you only have to pay for the initial version (at this moment in time unless the dev changes the app name). Just because you think something shouldn't be possible, doesn't automatically mean it can't be done. Please don't post incorrect info because you believe it's the way it should be.
I TRIED this specifically for the purpose of this thread and it DOES NOT allow you to upgrade if you never bought/ bought an cancelled the purchase within 24hrs but saved the *.apk file and installed it from that.
When you try to upgrade it says you need to buy the app/ cannot upgrade.

Well I tried it too and updated the app without any issues.![]()
