My desire is to root my phone for performance, battery life, customization, and not have a brick. There seems to be some debate as to if CWM should be installed or not as it will cause the phone to brick. Is this because the phone is older and I'm just coming in the game late after the ICS flashing phase on GB? Or is there concern for the OTA ICS being bricked with CWM? Also, does this have anything to do with the unlocking of the bootloader?

The all in one [Updated 11-20-12][BOOTLOADER][Windows][VS920]Bootloader Pwnage Tool for the LG Spectrum 4G thread is what I believe to be the most current and safest tool, I just can't afford a brick the phone due to a lack of knowledge on my part. From what I understand, this tool will root, unlock the bootloader, and flash CWM, but is this what I need to do? I also wish to create a nandroid backup just in case the worst should happen, but CWM seems to be the route to go there from other posts.

Sorry for the lengthy post, just concerned about conflicting information on some threads and too much of a chicken to just try and see how it works!"

There's a difference between stock 4.0.4 (ics) and normal 4.0.4. Though, the current builds of Cyanogenmod and such are 4.2.2 (jellybean). Anything that verizon builds for you (ie. stock) is still a gimped version of android. They disable things like tethering, that are built in as part of android.


CWM usually prevents the OTA, as it usually cannot install the OTA.

The bricks from CWM were from the early days, where rom manager wouldn't always install the right version. Just use the pwnage tool to install it and you'll be fine.

The bootloader being unlocked doesn't cause bricks. It just gets relocked if you take an OTA somehow.

OTAs aren't a concern if you're running a custom rom (CM, AOKP, PAC) as they aren't stock and don't check for any such nonsense.


Basically, CAB flashing will reset most of anything you'll do to your phone. It's not a 100% safety net as there are a handful of things it can't recover from... Such as flashing roms that aren't made for this phone because that will mess up the partitions. Other than that, it will fix quite a bit of issues.


Really, if you just root you can try to tweak stock. My point is simply that you'll find there's not a whole lot that you can really do to improve the stock rom. Most people on the forum that have tried, then eventually flashed a custom rom have stated that they wished they would have done so earlier.

No worries. Hopefully you get it worked out.

For the future though, you should try to either stick to 1 thread or make a thread for your issue and stick to that.

Spreading between 4 or so threads with pretty much the same question copied and pasted, is a bit cumbersome for anyone trying to help.

But when I run the tool, it just comes back with multiple error messages and I am still rooted. When it tries to push stock recovery to phone it says "link failed no such file or directory." Then it reboots, tries to do something else, and another string of error messages. Does this two or three more times then says all finished but nothing takes? Any ideas?

You can't run it from a location with spaces in the path.

Not sure what you mean? I extracted the files to C: and running the tool from there.

This is the old root/unroot package. It won't do any good unless you're on GB.

So if you're on GB (v6 or earlier) then I'm not sure what to say other than confirm debugging is enabled and the phone is seen by the pc. But if you're on ICS (v7 or v8) then the only way to unroot is the cab flash method.

If you're on ICS you have to use this http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?t=639696 to unlock boot loader and install CWM. This tool is for GB, although I think the root still works, but it can't install CWM because of the locked bootloader.

4.0.4 and ICS are the same thing. You will need to use the pwnage tool here to unlock your phone and allow you to flash custom roms. This tool will most likely brick your phone as it was created before the Spectrum was updated to Android 4.0. (ICS).

The comment you are referring to is saying version 4 doesn't mean ICS. Its referring to VZW/LGs version numbers on the firmware updates... V4 was a gingerbread update whereas V7 was the ICS update, which android version numbering marks as 4.0.x.

Yeah, 4.0.4 is ICS, I was stating that this tool, as in the one in this thread, not the thread I linked, is for GB (2.3.6). The thread I linked is for ICS (4.0.4), and version (V4, V7, V8 etc.) Does that make more sense?

I restored my phone with the LG update tool and had the sim card replaced to get 4G to work again. The last time I used the PWNGE tool, it broke 4G for me. Does the tool still break 4G or is it working fine now?
I am a light to moderate user and I get close to 20 hours with stock now. In the past, when I rooted and installed Cyanogenmod M4 and RC1, the battery dropped to 8 hours.
Would rooting improve the battery life and what are most people getting with Cyanogenmod 10.1? Also, outside of Cyanogenmod, what ROMS would provide better or similar battery life to the stock ROM?

I guess you are referring to another tool mentioned elsewhere in these posts?

I downloaded the tool you linked me to. I have to use the "install exe." tool because for some reason when I unzip the zip file, windows 7 tells me it cannot create the "read me" file. The .exe file seems to install the folder to my C: drive successfully.

Now in using this tool, these are the directions as I see them. Could you look them over and let me know if I am missing any steps? I would really appreciate it!

1. Make sure usb debugging is enabled on the phone (in settings/developer options)

2. Make sure the phone is set to internet/modem or ethernet mode under connectivity settings

3. Make sure you have the proper drivers installed on your pc


4. Use this link to download the tool, [Updated 11-20-12][BOOTLOADER][Windows][VS920]Bootloader Pwnage Tool for the LG Spectrum 4G , extract it to your C: drive.

5. Run this tool twice.

6. CWM is now installed; boot into CWM and make a backup. Switch the format first from the default setting (dup) to (tar).


7. To flash a rom, put it on your SD card. Then, reboot into CWM recovery, and use it to wipe data/factory reset/wipe cache/wipe dalvik (dalvik is located under advanced in CWM). Then install zip from sdcard.

8. Choose your ROM zip from the sdcard and install it.

9. Install GAPPS Goo.im Downloads - Downloading gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip ,put the GAPPS rom on your SD card, go into CWM again and choose install zip from sdcard, navigate to gapps and flash that...and reboot. Is that it?

You shouldn't have to go into CWM twice to flash the rom and the GAPPS. You should be able to run both updates one after another. Other than that, you look like you have proper instructions.

Thank you, I fell better about it now. I made the list from replies to my posts from many other members, and I wanted to make sure I had it right.

If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you something of a more personal nature. How did you get started with all of this? What brought you to the world of android, made you want to pick apart the programs, and customize the android experience? What drove you in the very beginning? I've read hundreds of posts here, and it makes me wonder just when and why people decide that they want/need this.
Don't misunderstand, I see the benefits. I am in posession of my first phone, but I've had some android tablets for a couple of years now, and I think I understand now how the providers (verizon, for example), are thinking when they put their updates on our phones, and how they seek to profit from their actions. Just curious.
