Help Basic questions on ATT phone on TM network

After reviewing threads, I realize that updating my newly Craiglist purchased Att phone running on TMobile will be a problem. I haven't activated it yet some am not sure if it's running 4.1.2.
Will rooting solve this issue? If not, what's the procedure to manually install the updates or is there another answer short of switching phones.

Easy answer. Switch to AT&T. T-Mobile sucks. End of story.:p
