Root Welcome to Jelly Bean - Rooting

I need to fix links as they have been moved.
Until i can edit check the download section at following:
http://oudhitsquad.com/

Files are slowly being moved. Check the tools folder for files.

It's been the better part of a month now, and there is still no stock ROM on oudhitsquad.. Mind uploading it soon or a different mirror? I really, really want to move back to stock ICS.. thanks

You might try contacting one of the member links on the OUDHS site http://oudhitsquad.com/ . I have posted links to their work but they in the end are the ones that would be able to upload files you are wanting.

Good Luck!

What "stock" are you looking for? IRC, Interloper from OUDHS only got the Reverb for a short period before he bricked it. I don't think he ever made a ROM that way. If you are looking for the stock ROM, you will find it on this board.

Stock JB uploaded by zjones: http://androidforums.com/reverb-all-things-root/722761-rom-stock-jellybean-4-1-2-a.html
Stock 4.0.4 (not sure which one) uploaded by tyler1998: http://androidforums.com/reverb-all-things-root/721880-im-making-stock-jellybean-backup.html

Followed these instructions to root 2 Reverbs bought in Dec 2012. After JB update in April,. both phones would screen lock, touch pad crash 3-5 times a day. Sometimes even during phone calls. This root method WORKED first time on both phones.

Also used another thread to replace the recovery with CWM 8.

We complained to virgin mobile about the phones... they sent 2 new ones. These had JB 4.1.2 factory installed. Tech support assured us that the screen lock, touch pad crash symptom was very common, and is due to the update arriving via download. So, the factory phones with 4.1.2 would not have the same problem. We activated both phones,.. and in less than 24 hours both phones touch pad function crashed, and we were back popping batteries.

So,.. i decided to root those new phones! GET THIS! They both now have completely nonworking and un-repairable recovery modules. Used Odin to push CWM 8,.. no go. said passed on 12 attempts. Pulled battery and tried to power up in recovery only to see a blue screen flash,.. then Powered up in Regular Stock JB 4.1.2. Both phones did this. Used stock USB cable. Even tried to take CWM 8 off and put back on the stock recovery. When I do that,.. same thing. No recovery,..

These phones are recovery bricked. I have tried 4 different recoveries, and am now up to 20+ attempts on each unit. No dice.

We are now back using our original rooted phones with ICS super stock ROMs,. working fine. No screen lock in 3 days and counting. and the phone is over all faster.

Has Samsung or Virgin Mobile done something with the new crop of Reverbs to prevent recovery replacement?

Has anyone had this happen to them,... and fixed it?

You might reach out to xInterlopeRx with OUDHS and see if he has comments. I know the phone he was trying to use for development bricked. I think it was a recovery issue and was pre JB.

Your data is fine. You will need the stock recovery tar. Can follow directions in OP on pushing CWM. Process is the same. Make a nand incase you want to restore.

Non-phone-related life had me busy for a while. So to get back my stock recovery, I need to do the following?

Turn off phone
Plug phone into computer
Boot into download (power-vol.down)
Run Odin
Load recovery .tar in Odin
Uncheck "auto-reboot"
Start
When finished, disconnect phone
Pull battery

And that will give me back my stock recovery and let me do the OTA JB update?

Thanks.

If I remember correctly you were on full stock except for recovery. If still the case then the process you identified is correct. Since you are placing stock recovery you do not need to uncheck auto reboot or pull battery. That step is just for when you use Odin to push CWM after JB update as the reboot will over write with stock recovery (hope that makes sense)

It seems to have worked; thank you. :) And good memory! Yes, I was stock save for recovery and rooting. Now I'm stock save for rooting, if all went well.

Now I can focus on actually doing the actual update, woo. My main concern now is that I read somewhere that JB wants the external SD card to be ext3, and I can't remember if that's the same as how I'd formatted it for ICS. Assuming for the moment that my SD card is not formatted the way JB likes it, should I pull it before I update? Back it up, and re-format it? Hopefully the instructions will be otherwise the same.

Thanks.

Are you referring to the partition you have on your SD card for App2SD? (I think you were looking at using App2SD for a while, but I lost track of whether or not you did). In any case, after the upgrade to JB, your phone will NOT be rooted. So if you're using App2SD, you're probably going to want to move your apps back to the phone before upgrading.

I've already unlinked all my apps (using Link2SD), but I set up the camera to save pictures to the external card (which are then automatically uploaded to Dropbox). I also keep various backup files on the external card.

Everything is backed up just in case. I was only wondering if the card is formatted the right way.

And then, after all this is said and done, I'll figure out how to root JB. To quote Bill the Cat, "Ack. Pbthth."

Thanks.

I suspect that the partition on which you're saving pictures and backup files is formatted as FAT or FAT32 (at least mine is). If you connect your phone to a PC and it can read those files, then it must be. And that should continue to work fine on JB.

Just got a brand new Galaxy Reverb from VM today, running 4.1.2. I've followed the instructions in the OP on rooting, but having the same issue as someone up above. Odin doesn't fail at all, but when attempting to boot into recovery, I get a brief flash of blue, then nothing, forcing me to pull the battery.

Thoughts?

Follow OP's instructions, in minutes, got CWM and rooted. Thank you; everything works on the reverb. However, error on making backup, "error in making backup on system..."; I have a 32 G SD with 18G space, but CWM sees only 200 MB space, not quite sure why.

Questions:

1) Why CWM is seeing less free space than the real SD card? Is CWM seeing some other partition and use that to make backup and error out as it runs out of space?

2) What next for me to make a backup?

TIA,

bun

You should be able to make a backup with CWM. When you are trying to make your backup be sure you are selecting backup to external SD. If you try to backup to SD then what you are seeing sounds possible. The phone has 4gb internal which is split, 2gb for phone and 2gb as an SD partition.

Hope this info helps.

Can't even manage that now.

It's Vol-Up + Power to access recovery, right? I've flashed it, then immediately tried that combo, but the phone just boots as normal. No message or anything.

Alright, so color me confused, here:

Phone is fresh OotB, no modifications done to it at all. Came with the JB update, so I never had to update it. Phone still works fine after the following:

Followed the instructions verbatim. However, whenever I try to get into Recovery after a supposedly-successful flash of CWM Test 8, even before getting any chance to go further and actually root the phone: the phone says that it is going to go into recovery on the upper-left corner of the screen, then the screen flashes blue and then turns off. Even redownloaded the .tar file in case it might have been corrupted. And tried re-flashing the Test 8.tar file.

What gives? Any suggestions? My best guess is that the MD5 of the original CWM Test 8.tar file and the backup copy don't match - what are all of the available links to the .tar file? sorry, found them. Will download from all three mirrors and try each one.

It seems like there are two versions of the Reverb out. One that comes with ICS and one that comes with JB. The one with JB seems to be a little different so that the recovery made for the ICS one doesn't work. This has been reported with a few users.

So, then, no CWM or root for my SGR? I'll try the download directly from OUDHS to see if I have any luck there. If Interloper, ShabbyPenguin, or others need a full hardware list I can easily give it out, if that helps.

Can also supply info/run tests if needed.

Info/run?

Also, here's an update: no dice with the download direct from OUDHS. Also, has anyone else noticed how finicky this device is? Pressing hard on both volume down and power, almost every time I try to get to download mode it takes a few tries before it actually works, lol.

I'd be willing to try Odin on another computer if need-be, but here's the specs in case they're helpful to the CWM porters/devs:

Hey! I know the topic right now is the info/run tests ,but I read in some other thread the galaxy ring has had its kernel released and since the phones are nearly identical I was wondering if the root method for the galaxy ring might work? It's just downloading I think an apk and running it. I want to try it ,but I don't know what I would do if it didn't work and got bricked or something. Can anyone look into this thing further?
