Judging people by their phones

I wouldn't judge someone for the phone they own but then again I think a phone can give you some insight into who they are. Just like you can learn a little about who a person is by how they are dressed, how they walk, how they act, how they talk etc etc. That is all stuff we can use to get an initial impression, but we shouldn't make the mistake of thinking we know everything about a person by their accessories/behaviorism. Those are really just surface things, if you really want to know someone you have to talk to them and spend time around them during their various phases of happiness/sadness/anger.

Exactly. Couldn't say it better myself

I judge Bill Gates daughter for having an iPhone. Taking pictures with it on a private jet going to compete in horse shows. I'm sure she would be able to do that with no Microsoft.

My dad came to America in the early 80's and the first personal computer he saw was an Apple. And my first computer was an Apple. They are expensive, sure, but not like they were back 20 years ago.

My parents raised me with a philosophy of always buying what you *really* want. And really, people who want a tablet, but *really* would prefer the iPad, just need to get the picture that they should *really* be saving the additional money for it and NOT wasting it on a Kindle Fire or Nexus 7. It felt *really* rewarding finally getting my second (I had a 2006 model originally) MacBook Pro after a whole year of saving.

I don't judge people for their phone either, but I do judge people who buy a new Kindle/KF every year and say they wish they could afford the iPad while buying book after book. The same thing with people who buy a phone, but then wish it had been the iPhone. It's the whole, "I didn't really wanted it to begin with, but bought it anyway" thinking I hate.

I also judge people who play games on their phone, but that's me coming from the early days of the iPhone 2G when it was just apps, music, and the internet. I had a Pocket PC with Windows Mobile. So it's always been about using a smartphone/tablet as a smartphone/PDA and not some entertainment center.

I saw some 55+ year-old old guy playing Candy Crush Saga the other day. He was talking to some older lady about it too, trying to get her to download it. It was actually pretty sad. Two old people discussing the Google Play Store is pretty sad. (and okay, they were related to me.)

I play games too of course, mostly Humble Bundles, but otherwise I'm more into using my phone for tasks, the weather, e-mail, and quick Wikipedia searches and IMDB.

But yeah, I agree with a lot of people here. If you judge without knowing someone, you're only fooling yourself. But there are times where you can't help it because it's just bizarre at how some think.

What's wrong with discussing Play store? At least they weren't sideloading rogue APKs.

They don't make the phone I want anymore. I want one like the old Palm Treo.
Aside from the few files needed to make it run, if you didn't want the BS, you didn't load the BS. You didn't have people telling you to be more social. Easy to sync.

Now I'm spoiled by the info apps I can get, although Palm had some of them.

I'm not brand loyal . If Maemo ever got going and did what I wanted, I'd drop Android in a second. Nor do I care about who made the phone. I just look for the one that's easiest to root. That means that I simply don't care or pay attention to what anyone else has. They have a right to their choice.

Can you get an Iphone prepaid? What if prepaid's all you can afford and you need the phone?

If you are genuinely an Apple fan, you will save up for an Ipad. If it's only because schtick that you want it, you will probably find fault with it, and any other device that is not in fashion.

I don't game on the phone. Screen too small for most solitaires.

People sometimes just want something cheaper, thinking that they can't afford a higher end tablet. I am the one who will be buying a Nexus 7 tablet every year, and even be buying books, and I subscribe to Google Music, but I don't complain because I can't afford a premium tablet like an iPad. Well, I wouldn't buy an iPad even if I had the money. I like the form factor of the Nexus 7 tablet for recreational uses, but would prefer a Galaxy Note 10.1 for school like things. (Hoping they come out with a new one, as I will jump to buy one.)
By the tablets that people use, All I can really say is that most people only recognize the iPad as a tablet. They believe the definition of "Tablet" = "iPad". So, they go out and buy a iPad.

Huh? Did you mean, she would not be able to do that if there were no Microsoft?

She is lucky. She lives the dream and has a ball. I like horseys and private planes are superior to the mass transit planes you commoners must take.:D

My point is I don't think she is appreciative and just wants to be trendy.

I would never own a horse. Those things are death traps. Except for this Selle Francis, Tennessee Walker, and Arab mare that hang out in this barn on my dime.

I bought my iPhone 2G off contract and used it on the GoPhone plan. You're not supposed to do that anymore, but I'm pretty sure you can as long as you still have a data package to begin with. I was paying for unlimited data at the time, until I messed up and couldn't pay for a little while. :o This was when I was in my senior year of high school.

People on prepaid don't need a smartphone. It was a solution for people who would benefit from having a cellphone but couldn't pass the credit check. Now people get on those plans because they think that they deserve more for less.

It's a good way to teach your kids to pay for their phone every month or face consequences, like getting their number cut off, because it's not setup the same way as postpaid. But, it's like renting a house. You're not building credibility towards your provider, nor are you going to get that FREE to $200 cellphone deal in two years.

Does it cost more? Heck yeah, but I really don't care. It's the cost of living in this country.

I buy my own phones - European, used, I don't care. The only thing that usually makes me want to upgrade is getting apps and DB to open faster.

great classic dumb america.

i pay $50 a month on my prepaid, people pay $80+ a month for the same on a contract.

sounds like ones smart, ones not.

There. I fixed that for you. :)

I have an iPhone 5. I love it.

I also have an HTC One. I love that too.

At home, I run a mixture of Linux, Win7 and MacOs across seven PCs, so the tech-savvy thing doesn't hold true for me.

The phones I have fulfil the functions I need them for flawlessly. To be honest, if someone is going to judge me on what sort of phone I am using then I just don't want to be associated with such a shallow person that has to make themselves feel better about their own life by judging someone worthless or worthy purely because of their phone...

Prepaid looks good if you are the only user. I've found postpaid that you could customize services better for family. The $5 add a line from TMO was a decent deal.

This! Or I judge them based on what comes out of their mouths rather than what gadgets they have :-)

Is it wrong to judge people by the phones they use? There seems to be a rise in phoneism lately. People judge you by what phone you use. I find I do it sometimes, e.g. I tend to assume iPhone users are technologically ignorant and uninformed.

It is a freaking phone!!!!!!

What gives ANYONE the right to judge someone at all let alone by there phone?

What kind of phone I have is not important to me.......
If anyone judges people by what kind of phone they have then I would assume they are immature and ignorant.

i am not saying it is right.. but everyone pre-judges by what they see
i know i do it...

if a person is wearing torn tennis shoes..
i would guess he/she does not have a 40k or more job.
I could be wrong.. and they love that shoe and is eccentric millionaire.
but if i were to make a bet.. i would still bet they are lower than middle income.

if a person is wearing a fanny pack..
i would guess that person does not care much about fashion and has none.
but that person could a fashion designer, but...

if a person drove a top of the line expensive sports car ($150k or more)..
i would guess they are in the higher income..
but they could have stolen it.

if a person has a flip phone..
i would guess they have a fear of technology..
but they could be an IT Director

so.. the above examples are simple quick impressions of people.
and there are many things we use to judge others.. even if we do not even know that we are.

are you sure you do not judge people by what they have/use/wear???
