Tips for studying?

Now a college Student, taking a Psychology class. In the passed, I never studied, barely did homework in high school. But college now, this all has to change.

I would like some tips on being better prepared on studying for this specific class. Psychology. I have an online book, ( I hate paper and probably will never buy another paper book again for the rest of my life as long as I can help it)
I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 which proves good for taking notes, writing stuff down, recording lectures you know S note.
 
Read and highlight Each Topic Sentence first...of the chapter you are reading...then go back and read the paragraphs associated with each topic sentence. Highlight any important parts. Do the same for each Chapter as you read. If there is a "questions type format" or "things to think about" etc..section at the end of the chapter or section READ THAT FIRST.. and then do the topic sentence highlight reading routine..If you are confused about anything ...ASK YOUR PROFESSOR! Study groups are helpful too.even if only that they make you accountable for the material to someone other than yourself. Psychology especially beginning Psychology is mostly reading comprehension skills...make sure you understand the material and are able to regurgitate it right back out! you should be fine:)

I didn't have to learn to study until I got to graduate school. Then things changed real quick. :eek:

For me, its all about finding different ways to work with the same information.

Thank you. You have studied Psychology?
Study group sounds good. Theres this one person in my class, who happens to also be in 3/4 of my classes. So Monday, when the next class starts, I'll probably ask.
How do I start a study group??

If you're in a few classes with him/her, chances are you'll get to know them pretty well and will be the person who you will go to for questions/study buddies

As far as how to start, just ask them if they'd like to get together once a week or so to review the material you've gone over so far

Intro to psych is a lot of concepts, and (at least) for my class was part history lesson as well.

I never understood why we spent so much time on Freud's theories when the profession doesn't believe most of it to be true anymore :confused:

My Psych Teacher is really chill. I like the way he teaches, Everything is online, and we never get a piece of paper. I despise paper!!!
 
For me, it helps to write notes :eek: I know, I know, paperless is the future... but it works for me. Hell, I've got a box of old notebooks and legal pads from old classes. I keep 'em for some reason.

Though, typed notes means you can grep em. Much nicer. I've had teachers in all different levels go over 'effective' studying... and you know what? They were all different. I'd say the best 'studying' tip is:
1. Go to class. Especially in college. You're paying for it.
2. Do homework. I know, what a geek. But usually, the homework helps to build on the lessons.
3. Pay attention. If you're playing online games like that one where you're a penguin trying to fly off the iceberg ... well, you won't get much out of that particular router lesson. :/

Start a study group by getting to know some people in ur class even just casually
then just ask them if they are in! It takes that one person to get it going... Why not you?
Study groups are normal in college and usually you make a cool friend or two along the way!! :)
 
SF maybe what you could try setting yourself fixed study hours. Like set times that you intend to study, and make sure you have no distractions during study and stick to those hours. That's what the students have to do here, they all have set times reserved for self-study, and it is compulsory.

Myself, I was terrible for not studying when I should have, and not doing homework on time. :rolleyes:

Presumably in your college timetable you've got periods marked as "study periods" or sometimes "frees"...that's what they're for... study. :)
 
The biggest thing in psychology is terminology.

It'll make writing essays alot easier and talking to other psychology students and professers about the subject makes it a lot less "wordy"

Once you really start you'll see what I mean. ;)

So pay attention to that terminology! :)
Also something I've learned over the years of reading psychology books (never took psychology or college yet :( ) is the brain memorizes in threes.

Meaning, read it 3 times in your head, read it out loud 3 times, and write it 3 times.

It goes for anything. Want to remember a number of any kind? Do they and you'll retain it! :thumbup::D
 
I was lucky because even though I was not a brilliant student, I could memorize text.
I would take tests and get every question right because of my ability to quote the text book verbatim. There were several instances when I had no clue what I was reciting, but teachers don't usually realize that just because you can ace a test does not make you the best student in the class.:rolleyes:
My best advice is to really try to absorb what you read as you go.

That is one thing I am good at, setting time ahead for studying.

I just had a student come up to me at lunchtime asking about studying to be a psychologist. So I pointed him to this thread, I actually texted him the URL.

Haha awesome.
Though I'm not trying to become a Psychologist, I just want to do well in the class. Theres a quiz coming up tomorrow... Set aside some time tomorrow to study and take the quiz, but from the last one, I am not as confident. There were questions on there that were not even in the book, like "Does a Psychologist need a medical degree?"
 
Study like you are going to be teaching the lesson? That's how I studied for a test in high school. Not sure if it works for everyone but just my 2cents.
 
My advice might be a tad different, although I'm more of a "science guy" so it might not work as good for you as it did for me. If you can't handle the stress of not doing anything until one day before the exam, this is not for you.

Go to class only if you need to. If the teacher is just reading a power-point presentation that's available online, stay home and read it by yourself. You'll be done much faster, won't have to commute and won't be bored as hell. Most teachers are useless IMO and the whole system is archaic since it was designed when internet didn't exist.

Make friends. It helps a lot since they might share some special information with you. Also it's much more fun if you do have to go to class.

Have a high IQ. If you're not very smart, it's going to be harder. Sorry. :p

Don't bother doing (all of) the homework that doesn't give any points. Doing some might be good if you don't understand the material. Don't feel bad if you don't do any, ever.

Focus on finding what you really have to memorize for the exam. That's the hardest part and it's stupid because you'll forget it after (and you can always google it later if you do need it).

If you can bring one sheet of paper to the exam, write everything on it. Don't half-ass it. ;)

If you can bring your book to the exam, smile and don't do anything. :p

Your right, this doesn't help much.. ahaha
Anyway, so far what has been working was reading the chapter like 5 times, and taking notes every time, and using them on the online quizzes. I'm still going to ask my classmate if he wants to start a study group, that will be helpful, and better because we can all keep each other on track while studying.
I studied for an hour before the quiz today, and ended up with an 86% 13/15 on the quiz !! So proud of my studying as it paid off!!!

Oh yeah I forgot!! I'm pretty competitive but not so much in challenging myself.. i need a foe so to speak:)
anyway... so what really worked for me in all my classes was to pick one person who I thought was pretty bright and would do very well in the class.. It usually wasn't the obvious super smart person.. Usually it was the annoying know it all who would ask endless stupid questions and had no life outside of class:p!! But anyway I singled out that one person and then my goal was to beat them!! Ha!
Worked every time!!!!

Lol, Nobody talks in my Psych class, its really quiet... Nobody ask any questions, or comments on any thing

Now I don't like my classes going like that. It usually tells me that students are not interested or they don't understand. Is the psychology compulsory to your course or is it an option?
