my dad and cousin pray to steve jobs. its annoying.

i've never bought an Apple device in my life but i have to give Steve Jobs and company credit - they make a quality product and they set the bar high in the smartphone space for all to follow. we can partially thank Steve Jobs and Apple for the EVO 4G. they made everyone step their game up!

I give thanks to HTC and the Google team, who are innovative with or without Apple doing their own thing separately. Definitely not thanking Apple for anything htc does. In fact, iphone fans should thank htc and google, because if it was up to steve jobs they would maybe get a couple more megapixels in their phone camera and some gimmicky little feature that should have been there to begin with, once a year. HTC putting out so many new devices and progressing the industry is putting pressure on apple to step up their game. (IMHO of course)

do you really think the EVO would be as great as it is without the trailblazing and innovation and competition that Apple brought to the table with the iPhone? come on give credit where credit is due.

Jackson - first of all I hope your tennis tournament went well and that you kicked ass. Secondly, I'm hoping as well for an early release in May but my gut is still sticking to your dates of June 6/13th. I think I speak for all of us in saying that we're just being hopeful that it comes out earlier but we know that June is a more solid time. Either way it's only a few more weeks away!!! I can't wait to see all the buzz start in mid May. There's a LOT of animated Sprint billboards all over here (SF bay area) that I know will have the EVO soon

Edited: added wrong article to share. This is what I meant to post:

When I said earlier that Sprint might be better off waiting until July or August to release the EVO, it drew some positive, but mostly negative posts. I'm sure this is one of the things Sprint is wrestling with everyday.

My post was mostly in regards RiverOfIce statement when she said "But trust me sprint, if you release the evo against the iphone, and the iphone is on another carrier, you are going to get creamed".

Self Praise told us awhile ago that the software part of the phone isn't finished yet. I don't know about you guys, but I don't want a phone with bugs. That would certainly hurt Sprint's chances with a really great phone on their hands.

From what Jackson and others are saying, the soonest the phone can drop is June and that could mean big trouble, because Apple will be sucking all the news and the EVO will go unnoticed. No matter what, the EVO sales figures have no chance of being what the iPhone sales are going to be. A couple of weeks ago, I posted a graphic in this thread, showing in February of this year, iPhone sales equaled all other smartphone sales combined and they were double that of all Android phones combined.

When I said a July or August release could suck some air out of Apple's sails, I only meant that after all the pro-Apple media events die down, would Sprint have a good chance of capturing the attention with the EVO 4G. There's no way the EVO can compete in the month of June against Apple. Look at how much attention the iPhone is getting already compared to almost none for the EVO.

I know a lot of you will disagree with me, because you want the phone so bad, but so do I. I'm just willing to wait longer for the iPhone explosion to die down first, because I think the EVO will have a better chance by then and we'll have more WiMAX in service by then too. If it's an August release, it's still summer and Sprint saves face. I can't help but think it would be the smart thing to do. I'm certainly not going to jump ship and there's no way I'll be buying an iPhone.

The only exception to this I can see, is a huge media blitz by Sprint and to some extent, it looks like that could happen. Still, I think Sprint's chances improve greatly with a July or August release. Since we haven't heard anything officially, I think it could happen. I'm just saying... I'm just being the messenger, so please don't hate me. :p

"I know there are device companies out there right now where the employees are whispering to each other, "we've committed to shipping on a certain date, but the product won't really be ready." You know who you are. Don't let your company pull a Pre; speak up. If nothing else works, print this post and send it to your boss. The Board of Directors might fire you if you delay the launch, but they definitely will fire you if the product fails."

Well, that is something they will have to deal with regardless. I know a ton of people who are not smart phone hobbyists like we are. They all know there is a new iPhone on the way and many are debating getting it or keeping what they have now. I think maybe one person I've spoken with has heard of the Evo or would consider it. To the vast majority of people, brand loyalty and name recognition rule the day. People don't really even research this stuff. The get iPhones because...duh, they're the coolest and there's an app for that. They get Verizon because...duh, they have the network. Can you hear me now?

People still think of Sprint as the carrier for poor people with bad credit. It's a shame but it really is true at least where I live. Brand perception is the single most make-or-break thing in consumer sales these days.

Sprint needs it to put it out before the iphone, so AT&T doesn't lock all those potential EVO buyers into a two year contract.

i'm tempted to go get the VZW Incredible on April 29 but then i think about the ETF, my $99 Sprint Everything Plan vs. $130+ at VZW, 4G at Sprint vs. 3G at VZW, and 4.3" EVO vs. 3.7" Incredible. i'm like a bird in a cage - i have to just sit here and take it.

And that's the hardest part. i have to wait around like everyone else. like a schnook.

I hate to say this, but even if the iPhone doesn't match the EVO spec wise, it is STILL an iPhone and STILL will sell 1 million in 3 days. That is just fact. It WILL take away from EVO sales no matter what you think. That is the way everything is these days. No matter when Sprint releases the EVO, sales will still go to the iPhone.

I think the Incredible will have a bigger impact on the Evo than the iPhone will. Those iPhone people will buy one even if they take an old Motorola RAZR and slap an apple logo on it. Impatient people on the fence will settle for the Incredible.

so call Hesse and tell him to get crackin' and get this puppy out on May 5!!!

I'm thinking if the EVO is not ready to be released in May, maybe they should wait until July or August (hey, that's still summer) when all the hoopla around the iPhone dies down. Then the EVO could makes it's big debut and suck some of the wind out of Apple's sails.

1. They would then have to deal with my having committed suicide, and
2. The Evo's buzzworthiness goes down by the day. When you create a phone whose biggest plus is its specs, you can't sit on your hands any longer than necessary waiting to release it. The market moves fast.

@Eguy
I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying, especially about the iPhone sales, but I believe it will be a disaster for Sprint if they release the EVO in June, because Apple is going to grab all of the attention and Sprint will get very little.

Sure, all of us in this forum will be disappointed with a late summer release, but you can't hold that against Sprint when they're been saying "summer" all along. Remember, we're a small percentage of potential customers compared to what it could be when the general population learns about the EVO 4G. No matter what, iPhone people are going to buy iPhones, so I don't see that hurting Sprint. The longer Sprint waits to release the phone, the better the chance of people getting the message. I'm afraid a June release will cause the EVO 4G to go unnoticed by most people.

Edit: Sorry, all this is a response to all those calling for a "May" release. Maybe I'm going a little overboard the other way, but maybe not...

I agree with you completely. I do think that 6/10 people on the fence will get another iPhone though.

there's no excuse for Sprint to keep dicking around and delaying this release date. HTC built the hardware and Google/HTC built the software. the EVO is essentially an Incredible with a bigger display and a 3G/4G chip in a different casing.

it's not like the Palm Pre or the iPhone where everything has to be created in house. the R&D is already done!

The reason why I agreed with your initial point bill is because the support/following that the iPhone has is undeniable and if Verizon were to get the phone all other phone makers could just forget it!! I guarantee many Droid or Incredible users would return theirs for an iPhone. Not because its a better phone but because its the iPhone and has a global reputation as an elite phone.

I would like the EVO to come out first but I do not want an EVO with bugs!! But I get your whole argument. I don't care what kind of media blitz Sprint has for the EVO that media blitz will not get the attention any iPhone would get then add on the announcement of the iPhone going to a new carrier then you have to times that media blitz times two.

Add in if the iPhone were to get 4G with Sprint and the EVO comes out 2 or 3 weeks before it.. How many people would return their EVO 4G for an iPhone 4G. I am sure maybe none of us would but you better believe a lot of Sprint customers who refuse to pay that higher plan price to AT&T would..

This could very well be true. It could be the one thing that will hurt the EVO sales, especially with a late summer release. On the other hand, I'll bet a lot of people will dump Verizon and the Incredible after the EVO is released, so I don't see that phone hurting Sprint too much either. A lot of people that really like Verizon will stay with the Incredible and probably never even considered the EVO in the first place.

No disrespect, obviously, but I don't know why they couldn't release it "on time" (being early-mid June, though as you say, "on-time" could mean any time in the summer) and then advertise more heavily once they iPhone blitz has died down.

On the other hand, they could still release it in June--the people who were definitely, definitely going to get an iPhone would wind up having gotten it in the range of a few days to a week after release.

I just don't really feel that torturing the people most excited about their new killer device is a good idea. Especially when the aspects that make the device so awesome will not be as special in a few months as they are right now.

EDIT: Wow, this thread moves fast. This was in response to the post of Bill's which starts:

Good point. We've already been told the OS is fixed for 4g so what is the problem?
