Help Need help connecting phone to Win XP SP3

Are there any special settings or drivers required to connect my Verizon S3 to my Windows XP SP3 computer and see the files?

I plugged it in for the first time, the new hardware notice popped up and it mounted two instances - one for the internal "card" and one for the SD card. But all the directory icons were generic and none of the folders would open. I unplugged and replugged, and it wouldn't mount at all.

After I get my case (I'm wanting an Otterbox Armor), opening the back to get the SD card out to put it into a reader is not going to fly!

When you plug it into the computer, pull down the notification bar to change how to mount it....mount is as "mtp" and then you should be able to see the files.:)

I hope I understood your question correctly ;)

MTP mounted the phone as a media device and wanted to sync media files. I could see two instances - one for the card and one for the device - but couldn't open any files or folders.

CTP mounted the phone as a camera and allowed me to browse and open files and folders, but only on the phone and not the card.

Where to go from here??

My PC is not on the internet and does not support WiFi. This is strictly a USB-cable connection only.

I did find:
Samsung Galaxy S3 USB connection to PC - Windows XP - Windows XP

I did get into PhoneUtil and set to MTP + ADB. Didn't help.

I did disable Kies on my phone, becaue I understood it to be WiFi only and I had problems with my WiFi enabling itself. It looks, though, as installing Kies on the PC has been able to fix this issue sometimes.

I'm also going to search for XP drivers for the S III.

Gotta bump this back to active. Kies install is not going to work because it has to connect to the internet to download any file/program updates. Apparently because Kies wants to automatically sync music and contacts, it requires updates for Windows Media Player and Outlook.

Rubbish!! I just want to jack my phone into my computer and move files! Why is that so dinkin' hard??!?

You will need the Samsung Drivers installed at the least to be able to connect via USB. Not sure how you can get them without Internet on the XP machine.

I can download to a thumb drive from another computer, or to the SD card on my phone (which I pull out and insert into a USB adapter).
