Help Hangs During Bootup After Attempted Upgrade to JB 4.3 [SOLVED]

Last week I received a new Nexus 7 2012 (WiFi only). It is not rooted and I have hardly used it as it is to be a present for one of my girl friends.

Today when I turned it on, I was prompted to install the JB 4.3 update. I accepted the prompt and my tablet started the update process. I left the tablet alone to do its own thing, but everything did not go well. During the update process, the little Android laid on its back and displayed the message "Error" below. I left the table like this for about 30 minutes, but nothing more happened.

I then long-pressed the start button until "Google" is displayed. The large RGYB "X" displays and the tablet then hangs there. Yes, I have waited 15 minutes, but it still hangs there.)

The tablet would not turn off, so I long-pressed the volume+power buttons until I got into the Fastboot Mode. From there I was able to select "Power off" and shut down the tablet.

The Fastboot Mode screen displays:
Product Name - grouper
Variant - grouper
HW Version - ER3
Bootloader Version - 4.23
Baseband Version - N/A
Serial Number - ###@#@@####@#@##
Signing - not defined yet
Lock State - Locked

From Fastboot Mode, I have tried:
START - Hangs at the large RGYB "X" like before.
RESTART BOOTLOADER - Just returns me to the Fastboot Mode screen.
RECOVERY MODE - Displays little Android laid on its back with the message "No command" below and hangs.
POWER OFF - This works and powers off the tablet.

After powering off, I have tried to normally start the table - still hangs at the large RGYB "X", and all the Fastboot Mode options with the same results as above.

I cannot find any way to properly start the tablet.

Where do I go from here? :confused:
 
You could try installing the 4.3 image manually. I did this on my N7 because I was too impatient to wait for the OTA update and it's not as intimidating as it initially seems.

You can download the factory image from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images. Googling will find you lots of guides for how to do the installation. As I recall the factory image includes a .cmd file that does all the hard work for you.

Follow the how to vids, it's pretty easy to use. Using Wug's looped/soft brick option you can have wugs download all the factory images and flash the tablet back to stock 4.2.2.

Personally I would avoid the 4.3 update for now, using Wug's you can root the tablet in one click and take advantage of all new features such as application backup and more.

Make sure you are using a good quality tight fitting USB cable when doing any kind of ADB work.

The current Wugs toolkit works equally well with any version of Android on a Nexus, including of course 4.3.

I see no compelling reason not to update.
 
I was having all kind of flash issues, in particular the update was crashing Dolphin and Xscope browsers. Being rooted and running Titanium Backup, TB's profiles are far more comprehensive than 4.3's profile features.

I view 4.3 as entirely optional over 4.2.2.
 
Thank you all for your advice. I used the latest version of the Wugfresh NRT and flashed to JB 4.3. Now all is back to normal.

Next problem is to decide which girl friend to give it to :)
