The back on the developer edition is not the soft touch, it is smooth and a tad slippery. I just put a Diztronic case on mine for bump protection and to combat the slickery-ness of it all.
Thanks for the info. I forgot to ask, I assume that since you're buying straight from Moto, that any warranty & support is solely through them, correct?
Right now I'm torn between the X Dev edition and the Maxx. I like the design of the X better, better feel in the hand (black version), smaller footprint/large screen, but only 16GB unless you go with the Dev edition and lose the soft touch back. The Maxx has the soft touch back, larger battery & 32GB of storage. The volume control/Sim tray worries me a bit as far as reliability. I think I'll be fine with either as far as battery is concerned, and the size of the Maxx is pretty much the same as my S3. I always used to have Moto phones before I got into smartphones. After that it was all HTC and my S3 is the first Samsung I've owned. It has screen burn in issues and the battery doesn't last like when I first got it. Today for example, I took the phone off the charger at 10am, and by 5pm it was down to 22%. I could pick up another battery but the screen repair is around $250 to fix, so I might as well look around. I want to come back to Moto because neither my HTCs or this Samsung had the signal reception of the Motos, they're the king in that regard.
So it kinda sounds like either get Moto X Dev Edition and a TPU case or a Maxx (Dev or regular). I don't root or flash, so I won't be making use of the unlocked bootloader. I'll be buying full retail to keep unlimited and my data promo (data on all 5 lines gets me a $20 discount per line) so the price is the same for either. I just keep going back and forth between them.
P.S. I talked with both Moto and Verizon about when Moto Maker would be available on Verizon. The guy at Moto said they thought it'd be sometime in December. At the Verizon store he said his Moto rep said they weren't sure if Verizon was going to go through with it, saying the customizations would make warranty replacements more difficult, and no plans for a 32GB version. Just a 16GB in black or white. Take both with a grain of salt, but I wouldn't put it past Verizon to use that line of reasoning for not making it available.
