Help Keypad screen blacks out before I can type on it

I *think* my problem is the proximity sensor but I can't find any setting to correct the issue.

Occasionally I'll be on a call where i have to key in a number on the keypad during the call - ID number, etc. I pull the phone away from my face to access the pad and it goes black. What's weird is that it doesn't happen all the time. I noticed it yesterday when I had to type in a 10-digit code for a webinar. When I looked away to consult the number, the screen blacked out. My Note tablet has a setting that does this when I look away, but I couldn't find anything about this on my phone.

you got a screen protector on it? May be interfering with the sensor.
