Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Can someone with a Chromecast try and see if they can stream videos directly from their phones to it via Avia (free app on the Play Store)?

And if so, what kind of video format are you using?

I've been waiting to pull the trigger on this because of lack of local streaming from my phone or tablet. Supposedly this has changed today.

I can stream directly from my phone. It casts mp4, but my avi file didn't work. I can cast pics and music as well. Pretty nice!

Edit: to enable the cast function there's a $2.99 in app purchase required

Awesome! I guess I'm going to my meth dealer again (BB) to pick up a Chromecast.

There are also rumors of a Nexus TV on the horizon. May be something to look into if you're looking at getting a chromecast.

On second thought, after seeing your history of indecisiveness...

Bought it but if it doesn't stream avi then it can't really stream local files in the general sense :/

I just want to be able to play avi files.

Wynd, thing is AVI is really just a container. Do you know what actual video codec they use? Depending on where AVIs come from, they can contain Divx, Xvid, AVC, etc. Does anyone know what the Chromecast actually supports? Like just certain flavours of MP4.

The chrome browser can only play mp4. But since chromecast is just a receiver, my understanding is that if your player can play avi, then it should be casted fine. At least that's how it worked before.

Got some good news today - my N5 has shipped :D

Also, forgot to mention, I requested a Chromecast as a holiday gift! Really looking forward to that.

Well I tried casting an avi using avia but said chromecast doesn't support the file type yet ugh.

That's almost definitely an unsupported codec issue. AVI is only a wrapper or a container. Although I don't have a Chromecast myself, but I've got AVIs that won't play in Apple Quicktime because that doesn't support the Xvid codec. However they play in VLC just fine. A solution is to transcode them into a format that is supported by the Chromecast.

What AVIs are you trying to play on your Chromecast Wynd - ones you downloaded with bittorrent? Because often those are encoded with codecs like Xvid. Windows Media Player chokes on those as well. I come across this stuff when I'm sourcing educational materials for my students.

I don't really understand the whole container/codec thing, but in my experience AVI always seems to be poorer in quality than mkv or mp4. I don't know why that is.

If it can stream mp4, I'm in.

To understand, start with pictures.

I'm busy - my new granddaughter arrived last night, break's just about over and I'm going in to see her now. :)

Thanks for the writeup, and congratulations on the new addition, Early!
:)

Apparently the Asus CEO is claiming that they're going to bring the Padfone to the US next year, possibly in Quarter 2. I'm quite anxious to see how this unfolds because it's the one device that can tear me away from the Nexus line.
