Pictures Don't Display In Full Screen

I finally got to see a Nexus 5 today at the T-Mobile store. However, neither the sales guy or me could figure out how come pictures show up with black bars on each side (like a 4:3 display), and don't display full screen. Is this the way the N5 is, or is there some way to change this or has this been fixed by an update?

Really thinking about getting one and finally leaving VM, but I really like to see pictures fill the whole screen, and this might be a deal breaker.

Pictures with stock camera are taken at 4:3 ratio. The screen is 16:9 (widescreen) hence the black bars, just like watching an old 4:3 movie on a widescreen TV. There doesn't seem to be a setting for taking widescreen pics (16:9)

I'm checking to see if another camera App can take widescreen pics. I hadn't checked this aspect out much before. Will update this post if I find something.

I'm an escapee from VM too... no going back :)

Correct. The photos are in 4:3

But only ones taken by your camera.

Im not sure I'd let that be a deal breaker on an otherwise top notch device

Funny thing is that under settings (after switching HDR+ off), there is a filesize option for 2M (16:9) - it still generates the 4:3 picture though.

While it is not a dealbreaker, I don't understand google's reasoning behind this choice to shoot 4:3 pictures.

There are apps that allow for widescreen pics... it's just not a feature in the stock app, or any free apps I've checked out (yet). Still looking.

So the hardware is capable of widescreen photos, just depends on the app.
