I thought I was gonna get a free Nexus too the other day. I was emailing Google back and forth about whether they had received my defected nexus 5 that I had sent back (I'd already received my replacement), and the last email they sent me was something along the lines of expect a refund to your card in the next 24 hours. Never happened unfortunately.
