Root [Virgin Mobile] How screwed am I?

Root was not achieved but I have modified status, to be precise.

You have then lost your warranty to check to make sure you can go into download mode to see if you have any flashes. To get into DL mode you'll need to turn off the phone and while turning it on hold the power+volume down button+(the home button?) To get out of DL mode just hold the power button.

Does your custom recovery work? Do you know what he put on? Either; Clockworkmod (CWM), Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP), or Philz Recovery. If so check to see if your on MD7 because in the first link I posted there is the MD7 modem. If you flash that (be sure to wipe cache and dalvik cache (dalvik cache is normally found in the advanced options)) your phone should be able to send texts and MMS as normal. Make sure your on MD7 though.

Yeah but then I'll lose my warranty.

A phrase no one has ever lost sleep over when they root their phone! That is just part of the territory; I have never once felt that any possible warranty issue is even worthy of consideration versus the benefits of rooting. So now Samsung just has a way to prove beyond all doubt you have bent the rules with a phone you own outright in the first place, no biggie. For starters, and this is not condescending, but rooting the VM SGS3 is about as easy as it gets. Despite the title, my tutorial on modifying ROM's has a TON of information to just get you started, including a step-by-step rooting guide in case you didn't see the same guide on Britton's thread, as well as all the relevant links. You literally only need two files (plus a working computer lol!!): the custom recovery in the form of a .tar file, and the SuperSU .zip. That's it. It will probably take longer to find and download the files, even with the links provided, than it will to actually perform the procedure. Sean has a very valid point in one of his replies as well, as long as you can boot up, you're not actually screwed. Kudos in general to him and AJ for their responses here! So my advice right now, once you've got your head on straight again (sometimes fresh eyes in the morning goes a really long way!), is to read through each sticky thread very carefully, at least the OP of each one for starters, and then I think things will start to make sense. PM me if needed, AJ and Sean are at the ready as well it would seem, and post as needed as well.

I need sleep too. Wait, aren't you in the same time zone as me? Do you not sleep? lol

I'm always here to help! Calvin and Hobbes to the RESCUE!!

You're one zone ahead of me brother, I'm on Mountain Time; thanks to working closing shifts at least four times a week, though, it sure feels like I never sleep! I love being active on the forums after work though, it is something to look forward to when I get home. Calvin and Hobbes indeed my friend, two superheroes in my book!!!

I don't have the mk5 zip on the custom recovery. I also realized wifi no longer works. This phone is so messed up. I'm thinking I'm going to cut my losses and sell it to someone who can fix it. I'll try one more time but really, I'm at my wits end and I was wrong to mess with it.

I've learned my lesson, I should have just got a dumbphone I couldn't mess up. This is the first time I have had nightmares because of my phone.

Do you have someone with a working computer who will let you install the Samsung drivers and Odin on their computer (this would only be for long enough to get your phone up and running)? You will need those two things plus:
Philz Touch recovery version 6.0.0.8 file in .tar form
SuperSU version 1.80 file in .zip form
Stock/rooted MK5 ROM by jdsingle76

Links for all three of those files are in the OP of my tutorial on modifying custom ROM's. Samsung drivers are part of the Kies package on the Samsung website, and Google "Odin 3.07" for that file. If you can get that all together on a working computer, we can help you.

I'm actually going to the cell repair place today and hopefully get this sorted out. I don't have anyone who'll let me use their computer right now to do it myself so that's my only option.

Phone is now rooted and backed up though MMS/4G is not working. (the initial problem was due to trying to flash an older version of something) It's the newer s3 so it doesn't have APN settings, any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

And my visual voicemail is down. (it wants to update and it fails the update, and has a notification I can't get rid of) Will I still be able to get non visual voice mails? And now I get the dreaded update nag again. Help...?

Open up your dialler and type ##72786#, phone will reboot and update on its own with PRL, profile, etc. Then, if you have a WiFi connection on it, try downloading the rooted/stock ROM by jdsingle76 and flashing that.

I was hoping for more of a patch, I waited three hours to get this ROM (a sprint one) put on. I have spent seven hours total at the shop for this, so I really just want to patch it if possible. I'm trying to get a different computer to be able to flash from but I am rather broke, and even the time spent fixing this is costing money. So if I can patch it it will be a bit more cost effective. Or is this the only way to fix the APN and my voicemail?

At the very least I figure it doesn't hurt to give it a shot. A lot of possibilities are opened up if this works and you have a good base to proceed from. If you can wait until later tonight I will have computer access after work instead of just Tapatalk, we can explore some options at that point.

There are really no patches for what u want. I would say if u can live with it until your PC gets fixed the u have so many choices also all the peeps here will try and help this is a wonderful place

Figures... I begged him to put a virgin rom on there but the only one that worked he said was a sprint one. I really can;t fix this myself. I really am not good at this, i so badly need help.. i wish someone who lived nearby could help me in person. I'm so desperate to fix this but I'm so desperately in need of money I can;t even get a working computer. I have an old Vista Home Basic PC but it barely ran and I'm not sure I could flash with it, if it even turns on anymore. The laptop's USB ports are dead and it;s off warranty. That and I feel this is way beyond me still. I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm not even sure what a kernel is, to be honest. I read this stuff here and feel liek I belong in special ed.

Do you have WiFi working currently on your phone or is that broken?

it works. I however do NOT have room on the SD card. It;s pretty full. the custom recoveries and the two roms are what's taking up space plus all my media.

Internal is full too? If you can move some things around and have about a gigabyte or two free that's all you should need.

yes but aside from my own files that aren't backed up they'll be wiped when installing a new rom when they move to internal. I'm not sure which I need to KEEP on the card too (like my recovery)

No they won't because an internal wipe is not part of flashing a ROM, only optional for some users. Cache, Dalvik-cache, and system are all that gets wiped.

Ok. well I'll go back again and this time I'll tell him to try jdsingle's ROM... if that doesn't work I am out of ideas and doing it myself makes me panic, I'm not sure of anything and I have extraordinarily bad luck with phones so doing anything myself is terrifying. I have had three die in the last year from no fault of my own. One bricked after 12 hours with me doing nothing. I don't have an alternate phone to use if things go south and I'll be in surgery day after Christmas so I need it running for medical needs. I was pretty stupid to attempt root in the first place, what with needing it so bad.

Gotcha. I would say download that ROM yourself and just have it ready to flash. I hate to say it, but it seems like the people you have dealt with don't have enough knowledge to be charging a fee for their services. You can pm me if at any point you think they are giving you bad info prior to them messing around with your phone again.

One question though, will my recovery work with it (whatever it is) or does it have to be a specific recovery to get that ROM working? it will work on the newer 16GB model? The problem with getting it rooted and flashed was that the models were slightly different so that it wasn't initially working.

Recovery is independent of ROM. I would recommend going ahead and downloading the .zip file for the latest Philz Touch while you're at it (not the .tar file since you don't have access to Odin on a computer), you can flash Philz from your current recovery and have Philz instead. It is a better recovery than the other ones available. Basically, recovery is just a partition on your phone, doesn't really affect your storage either.
