Problems with Keyboard hinge?

I'm having problems with my dock hinge, it's way too loose. Had the tablet and dock for about 6 weeks now, unless I keep them both from moving while using I get the keyboard disconnecting from the tablet. I've been noticing the tablet saying "External Storage Inserted" all the time. Then I noticed that the keyboard wouldn't work some times. This is the third ASUS tablet and dock that I've had, not real happy with the fit on this pair. Looked at sending it back, over the 4 week limit from where I bought it. Sent ASUS an e-mail a week ago, no answer yet. Love the tablet, can't believe they would screw this up. Anyone else have this problem? Looked on Amazon, the dock get's only 2/5 stars due to this issue.

Ya, I'm realy disappointed, thought I had found a new company that put out great stuff, first tablet was great, second had minor dock issues, this one is not great considering what you spend on it. Next time a new brand.

Hello all.

I am thinking about purchasing this tablet keyboard combo to upgrade my aging tf101. I very much like the combo concept, and use the 101 both ways often.

The questions I have are:

How bad is the docking issue?
I use the tf101 in the docked setup to take notes with on my lap weekly. It is hard to keep perfectly still when doing so. Is this enough of the kind of movement that is going to cause it to become detached?

Asus finally got back in touch with me today. Looks like maybe some action on the issue. More to come.

And to KillerKayak, have you heard anything more about pending action by ASUS yet? I know its only been about a week, but asking anyways.

Has anyone with the problem discovered any workarounds such as some cleverly placed felt tape where the tablet seats into the dock to tighten it up?

FYI - From a Newegg review:
Newegg.com - ASUS TF701T-DOCK-AD02 Keyboard Dock

Cons: Ok the hinge is very weak. Like everyone on the net has complained, the hinge becomes very weak within one day of use. Very poor build qualit from Asus,, but it has been resolved very easily. I took two very small peices of felt on the distal (outer part) of the hinge. They measure 1/4" x 1". I have them between both latches and that has resolved the dock constantly disconncting from the tablet. The hinge is still kind of loose but not as bad.

Thanks!
Vanman

Asus sent me an RMA so the keyboard headed back on Saturday. Will let you know how it works out. I guess I'd try to figure out if Asus has a fix for this or how they are dealing with it. Honestly , I would not buy the new tablet and keyboard. The tablet is faster and a little better resolution, but the keyboard is unsat. If they fix it then I would be sold. Looking to sell my Transformer Infinity and having some serious second thoughts about it. It was a solid machine. The new one, not so much. How can a company that has done this at least two times before blow it so bad the third time?
And don't settle for a work around, you are paying almost $600 for this, it should be perfect!

Thanks for the insight KillerKayak!

I REALLY Love the old tf101 and hate to upgrade. It pains me actually, but has very low ram amount, and is very laggy. I also never upgraded to ICS as I saw too many bad things happen to people when they did, and as such it is way behind on capability. Great battery life, solid tablet, love the keyboard dock.

But...it's time. I know the tf701 is expensive and that is the MAJOR stumble for me.

Question is for me, as an alternative, will I be happy with a Samsung and detached BT keyboard? And not having that little bit of extra battery for a long day of note taking and usage? OR, do I just put a piece of felt tape on it to tighten it up and move on?

Part of the "shopping experience" I suppose!

I do like all the reviews I read on the tf701. Every one I read said that it is everything that the tf700 should have been and then some. That it slightly out performed the current like-kind Samsung. Of course, not sure if that is true, but I saw some benchmarks on it.

I think I could compromise a piece of felt tape for smokin' fast performance!?!?

Question for you....How do you like the performance?
You said you have serious second thoughts about selling the tablet? That says something about it...

I guess that you had that replaced too? Or did you have to send back the entire package with the RMA?

Thanks!
Vanman

I'm having second thoughts about selling the 700. There is a noticeable difference between performance between the 700 and the 701, the 701 tablet is great!. But as far as I'm concerned the 701 without a dock is not what I want. Just looked at the dock reviews on Amazon, people in Jan 2014 still having problems. Disappointing. I was the biggest ASUS fan 3 months ago, not anymore.

Well, to finish up the string here.... got the repaired / replaced keyboard back... at first I thought it was worse than ever, couldn't fit the tablet into it, what good is this? Then I took the protective skin off the tablet face (the heavy resilliant stuff) and it fits like a charm, nice and tight like the older tablets. Love it. Haven't played with it long but it's a very tight fit, no wobbling like before. Not sure how they fixed it but initial imprression is that it's 100% fixed. Will update if I find any further issues but so far looks great. Total replacement time was a little over 2 weeks. THey ship it Fed Ex signature required, a pain for me but Fed Ex took a note that I signed with tracking number on it and left it in a very safe spot, Tks Fed Ex!

Thanks for the update. Glad it is working out for you!

My update is that I bought the 701 tablet/dock package a couple weeks ago. I saw the described looseness and added some real thin felt tape to the front (keyboard side of) inner wall of the dock, and the tablet fits inside the dock perfectly now, and is as secure as my old 101. I had the felt tape already so didn't cost me anything except 5 minutes of my time to ward off any potential future problems.

Been a couple weeks now and is working well. So far I am happy with the purchase. I will update if anything changes...

Hey there,

this is to inform you that the hinge trouble, loose or wobbly tablet can be fixed now within 2 minutes only. There is a YouTube video instruction how to do this by yourself.
You can find it under TF701 dock repair.

Hope this helps!
