Version 7

What is going to happen when the Nexus reaches version 7? There is already a Nexus 7 tablet. I'm just curious and wonder if Google thought about it. I guess since it will be awhile before it reaches that number they may come up with something different.

That, and there are rumors they may stop doing Nexus phones in favor of doing Play Store Editions, similar to the Moto Developers' editions. Vanilla Android on a device that is already out there. Have no idea how substantial those rumors are. So far, seems entirely based on a tweet from someone at Google.

The nexus 4 was called Nexus 4 because of its 4" screen.

The nexus 5 was named after its 5" screen.

The nexus 7 tablet was released in 2012 with a 7" screen.

They released another 7" nexus tablet in 2013 also called the nexus 7.

So you see, the naming system doesn't go by "version" (like the S3, S4, iPhone 4, iPhone 5), it goes by screen size

I'm not completely sold on that explanation. The Nexus One did not have a 1" screen. :p:rolleyes:;)

Further, you could as easily say the Nexus S would have been Nexus 2, Galaxy Nexus would have been the Nexus 3 and then the 4 and 5 fall right into place. Further, the Nexus 5 does not have a 5" (4.95") screen. ;)

I think screen size is the Nexus Tablet convention. I'm not so sure it is the phone convention. :) Just sayin'... If there is a source for the naming convention I've never seen it.

Considering the Nexus S, It wouldn't surprise me to see them use letters again. The 7th letter of the US alphabet would be "G", so maybe it would go Nexus 6, Nexus G, Nexus 8, Nexus 9, etc. This is all assuming the rumors of them ending the Nexus line are false like I think and hope they are.

The nexus S, galaxy nexus, nexus one, ect were before there was a family of nexus devices. The naming convention of screen size has stayed the same since we've had more than one device.

IMO you'll see the screen size naming system going forward, and we'll continue to see the nexus 5, 7 (more likely an 8 this time around), and nexus 10
