Questions from a Rookie about a Nexus 5

Do they automatically connect after they have been "forgotten"? They shouldn't, but the scan should find them each time they've been detected.

Oh no, they just appear on the screen. So 'forget' just means 'don't connect'. Something else I've learnt!

Thanks.

"Forget" forgets your log in information for that WiFi network, so the phone won't automatically connect when that network is found.

That's exactly why I bought a Nexus 5 - and the bigger screen!

I've had a play with Marge's iPhone 4S and I don't find it any more easy. I think that, in time, you'll find the Nexus really quite intuitive.

i was going to go with the Moto X because it is made in Ft Worth,Texas, about 20miles from where I live. But T Mobile does not carry it and I would have had to order one, wait, get a sim card etc.......lots of trouble.

Plus the N5 is larger, easier to see the screen. I found the link under setting that enlarged the font size to large and that makes it better as well.

I like it so far.........so far so good !

but i was not going to pay 699 for a phone when I could pay 396 ( and get a free phone protector) and do the same stuff for half the price.
amen. smart people are hard to come by these days.

When I am on the home page and then go to the top of the phone and slide down, I get a black page, that has the time, date and temperature.

50 degrees clear 8:32 a.m. (I live in the Dallas area, sorry East Coasters !)
Below the time on the right, it says 3 cards

What does that mean ?

--------

Is there a way to cut off the phone without holding the power button on the
right ?

It seems like there should be an icon to double tap and the phone goes off without having to hold the power button on the right.

Similar to the way we power off our laptops. Instead of hitting the power button every time, we hit the restart button.

-----------

Suggestion:

My first suggestion for Nexus 5.2 would be to move the power button on the upper right side. Every time I go to cut if off, I grip the volume buttons on the left and they move up or down.

They should move the buttons on the left or right to a new place. It is just intuitive for me to grip the whole phone.

It's not a problem, just an idea for Nexus peeps

That is Google Now. A click of that Notification will take you to those 3 cards in Google Now, were you not tempted to just click it?

search the web for - android power off widget - the top links are on the play store for apps that claim to provide just that option. Personally, I prefer to use the power button, because it has to be a deliberate press/hold/tap that causes shutdown. Unlike a PC where the shutdown/restart is usually in a corner of a large screen, on a phone, it may lead to unwanted shutdowns.

But hey, this is Android - you get to choose what you want :)

Power Toggles from the play store is pretty good. As well as having toggle widgets for wifi, aeropane mode etc. , you can have a toggle where you tap it and the screen turns off, and if you root, can shutdown the phone from a single tap.

For your T-Mobile stats (minutes used, data usage) install the T-Mobile MyAccount app.

It resets every month (sometimes a day or two late after your billing date)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tmobile.pr.mytmobile

I went to the link and found it.

But when I use my phone ...google play store, I can't find the app to dowload on the phone.

It seems like I should be able to find the same app.

I can find other apps from T Mobile, but not that one.

Any suggestions....?

Try the link above through your browser.

thanks, I did.

It says that 'this item is not available in your country or on your carrier.'

And the screen shots on the example are the same ones provided with your link.

I live in Texas .....Dallas..........and I have T Mobile.

T Mobile is headquartered in the San Francisco area I believe.

So it does not seem like the remark is applicable. Unless they are behind the times and think that Texas is still an independent nation.......lol......

Who knows why.......??

Thanks though.

That is weird. Can you go to that link on a PC (not on your phone), and click INSTALL, it should show you on the dropdown below why it is being rejected.

See attached image - it tells me that I can't install because of my carrier.
That will at least help you determine whether it is your carrier or country setting that is messed up.

Really weird. My son has his n4 on T-Mobile and he was able to install the app. IDK. He lives in Orlando. I'll see if he can pull the app.

See if this works. His is N4 not N5 but same OS. You will need to check Settings>Security>Unknown sources in order to install an app this way. All you need to do is click on the apk file once it's downloaded to your phone and a window will pop up with Install as a button choice. I just installed it on my N5 (Gophone). I wanted to be sure it wouldn't mess things up for you. You have several pages to go through ("Next" buttons) before the "Install."

Do you think it might be that I have kitkat and maybe TMobile has not updated it from Jellybean ?

Thanks for the ideas..........I'll follow your suggestions and the others, later this evening.

No. My son is running 4.4 2. Although there's no difference between google edition and T-Mobile's, (except $$), it may not be recognized in some markets??? He got his app from Play, but it's the N4--older, established device.

unless the op has a limited minutes/data plan and needs to keep tab on uses, i think he is better off not installing the t-mobile app which is a known spyware anyway. i got nexus 5 specifically so i do not have to have those spywares from oems/carriers shoved down my throat.

very strange, I live in CA and it worked fine for me, I have the Dirty Unicorn ROM (4.4.2).

There are addons you can get for your browser that let you download the apk when you browse the play store.

As far as it being spyware... never heard of that, and nothing comes up if you search for it.

a few more questions..........

1. when i cut on my phone.......i saw a start arrow with what appears like a motor with the hood open and a bunch of technical information at the bottom.......what is that.......or is it just something telling me to keep pushing the on button ?

how can i move app icons and shortcuts? If I push the blue circle with 6 dots, I get the page with shortcuts and apps. some of them I don't use and I want to move to the second page or to the top. I want the popular ones that i use at the bottom where my fingers are. when I tried to hold or double tap the apps, the apps opened. can I move them around ? when I tried to move one......it slid to the page with the google at the top and the green message circle, blue phone, 6 dots etc... at the bottom.

how can i delete them from a page ? I don't want the google play app on the page i described above. How do u get rid of it..........I tried right clicking and all the usual things... any suggestions ?

2. on the google page it has pic of several start pages i have xed out of. there is no place to x them out like an open card has. how do i get rid of them ?

3. How come when I cut the phone off at night it says something to the effect, cut the phone off, then i say yes and then it asks me again if i am sure. I wish they would delete the second question. But is there a restart button like there is on windows 8, like if i wanted to refresh it ?
many thanks...

1. Sounds like you put yourself in recovery mode. Probably were holding the down volume while pushing the power button, which I believe is how you get there. You don't want that for anything you are doing.

1b: you can move app shortcuts by holding them down and dragging them.

There are two places you talk about here. One is the app drawer, which is accessed by tapping the icon with the six dots. This is where all the icons or all the apps installed on your device show up. If you hold one down and drag, it should appear hovering over your home screen. The home screen is your desktop, and if it fills up with icons, you can create additional desk tops by dragging an icon to the right (or it will do it automatically if you try to place to many icons on the first one).

You can delete icons by doing a hold and release (a menu should pop up) or by dragging the icon (if I remember right-- I'm now using a different launcher) to an X that will appear at the top when you drag the icon.

2. I'm not sure enough about what you are referring to, sorry.

3. There are probably apps that will make it more one-step. Try searching the Play Store for "power off button app"

Hope this helps.

Hold and release does not work in the stock N5 launcher, only hold and drag works for removing apps from the desktop pages

You are right, sorry. I thought I had the stock launcher on my Nexus 7, but I have Nova there too and got mixed up. Sorry. :o
