Nexus 5 on Cricket

Newbie
Hello everyone, I've been doing a lot of research and there is no definative answer, so I thought I'd post it here before I make the switch.

Will a Google Nexus 5 purchased new directly from the Play store work on Cricket?

Thanks.

I think the ones from the Play store are GSM only so wouldn't work on Cricket's CDMA network. Maybe if you had a Sprint version you could get it flashed to Cricket.

Update: As mogelijk mentioned below Cricket has just switched over and is using GSM towers from AT&T. So now you can easily get a Cricket SIM card and use it with a Nexus 5.

Original: The Nexus 5 from Google Play also has CDMA. I know it can be used with Sprint, but not positive about Cricket. The Nexus 5 wont work on Verizon.

Yep, definitely will work, I have a Nexus 5 on the new Cricket network. I signed up last Friday when it was still AIO but last night got the sim and activated and saw the switch over to Cricket had happened. It's working great so far.

The question has already been answered, but I'd also like to confirm that the Nexus 5 is working beautifully on the new Cricket. I was not not a former Cricket customer and just signed up during the changeover.

I did, however, need to manually enter the APN settings from the website before I got data. Now I'm getting LTE almost all of the time and pretty much maxing out at the 8mbps in most places.

UMM which brings me to a question I will have to call and ask, I still have the AIO APN setting, need to find out if I need to switch them to Cricket APN settings.

FTR Aio customers keep your AIO APN settings ;)

Year m I have actually heard if AIO users try and update their settings it'll mess up MMS until you call and have them fix it on their end. I have seen this from several AIO customers. So if u where AIO just keep your settings until they change them!!

So don't update them yourself or u will be calling to have them fix it in their system

I just got a Red Nexus 5 the other day and now have it on Cricket. I originally had it on T-Mobile but decided to try Cricket. Other than having to set up the APN settings it working fantastic. Even though I'm throttled at 8 mbps I'm very satisfied with the new Cricket. I am on the $60/5 GB plan. I will soon be dropping T-M.

Did you have to do an UNlock for international/domestic calls?

Where do I find how to manually set the APN?

Links are fine.

If your asking if the device needs to be unlocked for it to be activated then yes.

Below are the APN settings that I have set up on mu device, to my knowing they have not changed, as I am sure I would be having issues, click the SHOW button to view, ;) cheers.

AIO Wireless APN Settings for Internet & MMS

Use the below aio wireless apn settings for configuring internet or data connection and mms apn settings for sending mms for android, iphone, iOS, blackberry or other unlocked phones.

How to edit the Aio Wireless APN for Android ?
Go to Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names -> New APN and type the below parameters.

Aio Wireless APN Settings
Name Internet
APN ndo
Proxy Not Set
Port Not Set
Username Not Set
Password Not Set
Server Not Set
MMSC http://mmsc.aiowireless.net
MMS Proxy proxy.aiowireless.net
MMS Port 80
MCC 310
MNC 150
Authentication type Not Set
APN type default,mms,fota,hipri,supl

Note: Make sure you enter it exactly as it is listed without any extra spaces or other characters!

aio wireless apn settings
Tap Save to finish, then go back one screen to the APN list and make sure the new APN just entered is enabled (the blue dot will be lit up).

You have sucessfully added a new aio wireless apn, now try accessing the internet or sending a mms. If you still find it not working try rebooting your phone (long-press the power button, select Power off; after phone shuts down, long-press the power button until it restarts) and check again.

I took my Nexus 5 T-M phone to the T-M store. They said I had to call 1-800-937-8997 to get it unlocked. I gave them the account information and the IMEI number (the unit I.D.).

They said they would email me within 24 hours. As they did not, I called and was told that the phone was unlocked. I don't know if they did anything or not.

I went back to the Cricket store and it set right up on the Cricket phone service. After they entered the APN stuff it worked on data too.

So I am all set and of course it works fine.

BTW, T-M may lock phones for International calls and the unlock process unlocks BOTH international and domestic calls.

Nexus 5 phones should be unlocked from the start . . . the Clicket SD did not work until after T-M said it was unlocked. Only the T-M occured and the N-5 worked afterwards. whatever.

TU for the comments. Cricket is so much better than T-M!

Just switched from MPCS to Cricket.
BYOD Nexus 5
$52.09 Out the Door. 9.99 SIM Card, 40.00 1st month Basic Plan, (waived activation fee). $100 credit for switch/port number. $35 a month with auto bill pay.

Don't have to pay a bill until Jan. 2015.

1GB 4GLte capped at 8mbps. Without doing a speed test, I wouldn't have known.
I am pleased with this.

I just got a new nexus 5 from the play store, entered the IMEI into cricket's website, and it spit out that I'd only get 3G speeds with this device. I chatted with their support, and they confirmed that because device is not cricket's, it wouldn't get 4GLTE data speeds. Sounds like you guys have a different experience - any insight into why the discrepancy?

Well I can tell you, I just got a N 5 about a week ago, and put my SIM card in from Cricket, and I have no issues getting LTE. ;) If device is unlocked, you should have no issues

I would go to a Cricket store and test it out, sometimes they don't always know best when u call in ;)

I have a Nexus 5 on Cricket and I can confirm I'm getting 4g LTE. I just ported my number from Straight Talk to Cricket about 2 weeks ago, and it was completely trouble-free. I was up and running with 4g LTE within minutes of putting the SIM card in. The port was almost instantaneous (I ordered online and I had all my ST info on hand to initiate my order, so it was smooth). A speed test confirmed the 8gbps cap (which I was aware of before porting and doesn't matter to me). I did have to manually enter APN info, but that only took a minute.
