car.. I do expect them to know it runs on gas... it has a motor.. not magic.
washing machine .. needs water.. soap... motor.. cant run without electricity.
there is some level of basic understanding that is expected.
knowing the term "HTML" .. is not equal to .. knowing how a 4strock motor works.
If I told my father it stood for HyperText Markup Language and wasn't an STD. Don't think he'd be any the wiser, would likely glaze over, and probably won't help him to surf the interwebs any better would it? Sure he wouldn't know the meaning of HTTP either.
He does drive but doesn't knows how an engine works, however he does know it takes petrol and not diesel, and that he has to check the fluids and tyre pressure periodically.
I can know that my TV is LCD vs LED.. but I don't have to know how that works or what it takes to make one.
Here's the thing, just about all TVs that are advertised as "LED" are actually LCD. LED is only referring to the backlight, that uses LEDs rather than fluorescent bulbs. It's really just marketing. Think just about all new TVs are LED backlit now, even though they might not be advertised as such. The exceptions would be plasma and AMOLED.
A true LED TV would be an AMOLED, still quite rare and rather expensive, like $7,000 for a 50 inch.
