Help Personal Dictionary: can't use spaces?

I'm running Kitkat 4.4.2. I want to add a simple phrase to my Personal Dictionary in the "Language & Input" settings:

"On my way" for the shortcut "omw" (no quotes, of course)

Personal Dictionary gives me the message that no spaces are allowed. I've seen online tutorials showing this exact shortcut (http://heresthethingblog.com/2012/12/04/androidiphone-tip-create-custom/), but I can't get it to work.

Any suggestions?

You've seen macro programs that allow spaces - dictionaries in phones are used to correct spelling in single words. If your phone doesn't have macro capability (or you didn't install a keyboard with one), you're stuck with spaceless words.

yeah, I thought this would work with the Google Keyboard, but the phrase has to be space-less. seems a no brainer to add this, but there must be a reason. People are asking for this capability with SwiftKey as well.

I bought Smart Keyboard just for that feature. I use it to add my address to email invoices. People have been asking for this on the Swype forums too.

It's in settings> text prediction> custom auto text.
