Huge volume level difference between ringtones and notifications

When the same piece is played for the ringtone and notifications, it is normal volume when I receive a call and barely audible when it's a text message or email. Any explanation, and how do I fix it?

I changed the Text Message Notification alert to "Beep Once" and enabled the repeat at 2 minutes. The beep is more intuitive and can be heard all over the house.

I can't find the option you mention. All I get is a list of ringtones to choose from.

With Android 4.3 (and before) the ringtone and notification volume was tied together. With 4.4 you can set them independently.

Go into settings>sound>volume and adjust them to your liking.

I know that. My use of the same ringtone was to confirm there was a problem with one of them.

There's no separate volume setting for each, yet one is loud and the other's almost inaudible.

Were they downloaded from different sources or are they stock ringtones/alerts native to the S5 right out of the box?

If you choose different ringtones for call and text notification are the volumes still wildly different even though set to be similar?

Initially I had the stock ring tone (Over the Horizon) and that's when I noticed it. I downloaded a few others, and whether the same or different, I always had the same result.

May be time for a trip back to the store in which you bought it or a factory reset. Before that though I'd uninstall any ringtone app makers I got from the Play Store or elsewhere to see if that helps.

This must be a software issue, I would have thought, as the phone is capable of playing sound at full volume.
