Deutsche Telekom accepts Softbank's offer to buy T-Mobile

Interesting news out of Japan this morning, reported by Reuters, that Detutshe Telekom has agreed to sell T-Mobile to Softbank. Be interesting to see how this develops, especially since I believe any merger attempt with Sprint will be denied by the FCC/Justice Department.

I agree, I don't think the FCC will let Sprint and T-Mobile merge in order to keep 4 national carriers. I believe that was the main reason they blocked the AT&T/T-Mobile merger.

I think this might get approval. When AT&T was trying to buy T-Mobile that would have created 2 huge companies and left Sprint in a very weak position. If Sprint and T-Mobile combine, that makes 3 companies of roughly equal size. A very different and more competitive outcome.

I've been a T-Mobile customer and a big fan for a long time, so I really hope this doesn't happen, but I agree with you here. I was definitely against AT&T/T-Mobile being able to merge, but I think there's a good chance they can get this one over the regulatory hurdles.

The issue is that at least AT&T and T-Mobile were both gsm. Sprint being a cdma carrier creates all sorts of complications and will result in one set of customers getting screwed as they deprecate either the legacy cdma or gsm network.

It can't be too much of a difference than when T-Mobile and metro merged. Metro is/was CDMA and that portion of the network will exist til 2015. So they have experience doing this once already

Same with Sprint ditching wimax, its a change that happens over many years

While Metro was CDMA, it was easy to pick which network to shut down because Metro's was significantly smaller to shut down. Both T-Mobile's and Sprint's networks are large. Not that I think it matters because I'm fairly confident that it won't get regulatory approval. They want the US to have 4 national carriers, and having 3 national carriers hasn't exactly helped Canada bring prices down. And the breakup fee that T-Mobile will get will only continue to help them buy more spectrum. It will hurt Sprint's bid to get 600MHz spectrum and help T-Mobile by giving them more financial resources.

A combined T-Mobile/Sprint would gradually replace both GSM and CDMA with voice over LTE. Combined or not, they're going to go LTE anyway, so different networks is not really a big deal.

This merger likely will happen. Question is, what will the new company be called? Or will each keep their brand?

S-Mobile

T-Sprint

Uncarrier Mobile

Don't know.....Nextmobile sounds kind of nice.

I was thinking sprint nextel tmobile...then both are trying to be hip and reinvent themselves while trying to adapt newer faster networks then it hit me NexTmobile the next stage in advancing the way we interact

As someone who is about to jump ship from Sprint, I would consider coming back if this happened. Only if the T-Mobile team was put in charge and they used their new money to quickly upgrade Sprint's crap towers. It would give the two of them a great chance at going head to head with Verizon and AT&T

To copy a post I made in another thread on the merger:

Just read an interesting article where Legere is quoted about the merger. To me, Legere seems to be stating that, if the merger happens, Sprint would be merged into T-Mobile.

His quote, "The conversations that are taking place now are about T-Mobile's brand, T-Mobile's offer set, the uncarrier movement, and the management team at T-Mobile. There's nobody talking about buying T-Mobile and shutting it down for spectrum. It means that you've got a company and a board and a team looking at its options."

He goes on to say, "I would consider a consolidation opportunity with another player that allows me to use the spectrum that they have and the size and the customer base that I have to grow the business. I have no desire to turn T-Mobile into the son of something else."

That looks like a pretty clear statement about what will happen after the merger. More importantly, Legere tweeted that the author "get an A+ on my quotes!"

I think we need to wait until the merger is approved and the details announced before we freak out.

From this day forth he shall be known as the spin doctor, he seems mildly against it anyway

Why is everyone flipping out about a merger? As a t-mobile customer, when t-mobile and metro pcs merged I didn't notice any difference. Who's to say it will be any different if t-mobile and sprint merge.

Sprint is already in the process of upgrading their "crap towers" across the entire country.

Its already paying dividends

Now that sprint and T-Mobile has merged can I ask everyone some questions and would like to hear some positive or negative talk feedback . first question... We know sprint has the push to talk if this was to be added to a T-Mobile phones and they say we need new equipment and they are going to give credits for devices how would you guys that just brought the s5 with problems feel about this . ...

Second do you think that sprint will put this push to talk on all phones or just the sprint side . .

Reports are they've agreed to terms.

Its still far from done as they need approval from the feds.

Right now most sprint phones do NOT have direct connect - they're in the process of decommissioning it and using the spectrum for other things

But I think now that they have a speedy connection from the T-Mobile I think this may open channels again . that PTT was for the feds before we used it

And I doubt t-mobile is changing anything in way of towers. Last I heard sprint was behind in the game. Even compared to t-mobile.

If you are behind in the game and suddenly you get that quick 2step and win the race or now in the lead makes you a lot stronger when you combine the 2 . as we all know or say some of us no sprint has always locked down the gsm part to their devices . so now I guess they can say they will have the last laugh.

In terms of 4g LTE towers yes

Total 4G towers probably not

Total voice or data coverage sprint is way ahead
